Story Notes: Unity 2 (part 2)

If you got here without reading the previous blog post or Unity 2 you're gonna be confused. Just scroll through for the pony pics, or maybe skim it in the hopes of finding a useful horse fact.

    Missing: Hobo Shoestring

I don't have the reach that a lot of YouTubers do, but I've got some railfans in my readership and probably some people who live in Tennessee . . .

Hobo Shoestring was an inspiration for Destination Unknown, and he's gone missing. Southern RailFan is leading a search effort at a lake he liked near his house; here's a video if you want details or think you might want to help:

Obligatory 2019 Blog Post · 4:43am Jan 2nd, 2019

Welcome to Nightvale2019!

Source

2019 is upon us like a rushing freight train made of bricks!

We’ll start with a look back. How many of y’all remember this?

Building a box-fort was no real effort, and it tucked neatly into a corner of the attic, almost behind a diagonal support on one side, with the chimney stones on the other. I used my pocketknife to enlarge a knothole on one of the boxes—that actually took longer than I thought it would. All the while, I was wondering if I wasinsane.

--The Haunting

“Maybe.” She leaned a little bit closer to him. “How's Mom?”

“Grumpy. She says that the foal's kicking, and she blames Dad, 'cause he wouldn't let her go out on the ice.”

“She got grumpy before she had you, too.” Winter Berry nuzzled his mane again. “Come on, let's get cleaned up for dinner, okay?”

--Spring Comes to Snow Hill

“It’s a centaur,” Rarity said, a tone of surprise in her voice.

“At least the panicked mob got something right,” Twilight muttered.

--Centorea Shianus in Equestria

There were no noble words to be spoken. Not for her—she would go wherever valiant ponies went, he supposed, regardless of what he did or did not say.

--unpublished*

She rummaged around in her saddlebags for a chocolate biscuit and nibbled on that while she considered the terrain in front of her. Now she'd gotten high enough up that the snow was covering everything it could stick to, and she knew as she got further aloft, it would be thick enough to hide crevasses, which was another thing she'd have to watch out for.

--Climb Every Mountain

When he was only fetlock-deep in the water, he shook himself off as well as he could, then rejoined his partner on the beach.

“There'snothingaround here,” he said. “I haven't smelled anything too unfamiliar.”

“Me neither. At least the briefing said what humans smell like, but I wish they could have given us a fresh human artifact to smell, so we'd be sure.”

--Onto the Pony Planet

Rainbow grinned. “So you're saying that rushing in without thinking is a smart thing to do?”

Twilight’s ears flattened. “Sometimes boldness succeeds where caution fails,” she admitted.

--unpublished**

With a twist of the key, the big Speedwell Ironworks straight 8 rumbled to life.

--Drive

That left him with his second option. Riskier, but if it worked, victory would be complete.

“Get me a pegasus messenger,” he barked. “I have new orders!”

“New orders!” The shout went around the camp, and moments later a young pegasus swooped in for a landing.

--No Time for Caution

“I’m out of paint.” Splish Splash shook her hoof, rattling the ball in the empty can. “Or else this thing’s broken again.” She pointed the nozzle back down towards the roof and pressed down; nothing came out except for a gentle hiss of propellant.

“I’ve still got a bunch left.” Heavy shifted his withers, sliding the chainsaw as much out of the way as he could. One of the straps had gotten snagged and had broken, and now it slid around his body. It liked to settle against his foreleg, which wasn’t so bad when he was flying, but it got in his way when he tried to land.

I published seven out of ten of my works in progress from last January. That’s not spectacular, not setting the world on fire, but it’s not nothing, either. And of course, there were a few stories that didn’t make that list, since they weren’t in progress last new year. Stories like Fence Post or Turnpike or Sunbeam.
______________________________________________________________
*One of my pre-readers and I spoke at length about this one at Bronycon, but thus far I haven’t had time to get back to it.
**This has the distinction of being the longest story to sit in the hopper; it was first conceived in 2012.
***This one’s got the honor of being the longest unpublished story I’ve got.

In fact, I published 27 new stories in 2018, and updated a few as well. I could really dig through and tell you how many total updates there were, but I’m feeling lazy and so I won’t. If anyone wants to comment below with the total number of stories and updates, feel free.

Anyway, in terms of stories published, I certainly had a good year; likewise, I did a fair number of blog posts on various subjects. Started a new group that’s mostly been ignored; I probably could have pushed on that harder, but didn’t.

Got more active on Discord, at least for a while. Incidentally, somebody or several somebodies have invited me to join their Discord groups over the last year, and I didn’t, largely because I don’t remember who. So you can hit me up, and I might join your server . . . or I might not, because free time is precious to me, and I’ll be honest, I’ve largely been off Discord for the last month because of everything piling on over the holiday season.

Still, I’d say that in terms of ponyfic, 2018 was a decent year.

I also should note that I did participate in Jinglemas 2018, although I haven’t had time to get my entry up on my own account. Should be doing that this week . . . just gotta get cover art and gin up a blog post, mostly. I probably could have done that tonight instead of writing a blog, but that’s Future Admiral Biscuit’s problem.

To cut the suspense, though, my entry was for Fan of Most Everything, and besides what he asked for, it also included an obligatory Magic reference and Derpy. It’s also the second time I’ve done a Jinglemas story for him; the first was Dinky’s First Hearth’s Warming.

What’s 2019 gonna bring? Well, I don’t know.

Hopefully, I’ll get those stories from 2018 finished and published. A couple of them were supposed to have been published in December, along with one for Cold in Gardez, but those just didn’t get done. December was also supposed to bring a new chapter for OPP, but as is obvious, that didn’t happen.

Part of the reason was that our new guy quit at work. I don’t remember if I told y’all that, but he did, and as we adjusted to the lack of the new guy, we worked a lot of overtime, and of course that cut into my writing time rather substantially. In the end, it all worked out; we set a new record for the year, and our previous record was set with two mechanics instead of only one (me).*

I do have some other stories in the hopper, and I think I’d be remiss to not include little teasers for y’all. One’s gonna be a gimme; that’s from the next chapter of The Haunting, which should be published today or tomorrow. And, just for giggles (and to give me a sense of accomplishment when I do publish it), I’ll include a snippet from my Jinglemas 2018 fic.

Plus, there’s that one for Gardez.

So here we go:

There were spring hooks on the ends of her chains, essentially really simple carabiners.  Interestingly, the latch could open either way, which was probably better for ponies.

“Do you want me to help push?”

She shook her head.  “That will make it want to tip forward, and dig the front of the skids into the ground.  If you can pull up, that would help.”

We both ordered a glass of wine.

She drank hers with a straw.  I was glad we weren’t at a fancy restaurant; any sommelier would have tossed her out on her rump if he’d seen that.  I thought it was adorable.

I could have moved to my armchair; that would have been less intimate, but it wasn’t nearly as cozy.

Applejack’s expression finally got so smug, it slipped off. Fortunately, she was wearing a slightly smaller smug look under the first.

“Do you?”

“I don’t think so. You were with me at the Andravidan Temple; did I look like I was enjoying being tied up?”

“Yeah, actually. You were kind of moaning.”

“I was not.”

“Squirming around on your seat.”

“That was to keep the ropes from being too tight. I wasn’t—ugh.”

So grab hold, y’all.

Derpibooru because :yay: Tumblr

The ride never ends.

Also, I’m still playing catchup with comment replies and whatnot. Should be caught up by the end of January if all goes well.

One advantage that we had over our last high bar is that our hourly rate is higher than it was ten years ago.

OMG sad pone on train! Kan I hug better? Please? Pleeeeeeease?!

So what *is* your discord Biscuit?

Happy new year Admiral!

my entry was for Fan of Most Everything,

I remember that one! It was one of my favorite!

No plan for that commander Hurricane glass window fic? :fluttershysad:

Of course! Always hug the sad pone.

4989739
Ahah, but I'm a railway enthusiast

4989736
I’ll let you know when I figure out how to use Discord.

I’m on the official FimFic Discord, as Admiral Biscuit, which ought to be enough to find me. If not, I’ll give you a more better link eventually. :derpytongue2:

I'd invite you to my Discord, but my friends are a bunch of degenerates. Then again, you could meet Leo. :pinkiecrazy:

Huzzah!

No plan for that commander Hurricane glass window fic? :fluttershysad:

That’s actually one of the snippets up above ... from last year. The intention was to finish and publish it in December, but that didn’t wind up happening. Nevertheless, it’s still on my mind, and will be finished.

4989744
Most of my friends are degenerates, too. You’ve met ROBCakeran53....

Here's to a new year and to further horse words!

The ride never ends.

Fuk'n cheers to that mate!

27 new stories.... Man, how do you do it!? I can't even wrap my head around that! That's incredible!

Then again I have been focused on a very long fanfic as opposed to short ones, so I'm hoping to switch gears to short one shots once I publish my big one.

Happy new year!

We shall see what happen s over the course of the year then hrmm?

4989736
This maybe?
admiral_biscuit#7379

That’s what I get when I click on me.

Discord sucks. Use IRC like a normal person. Or a tox client.

I don’t know what IRC or tox clients are.

4989921

27 new stories.... Man, how do you do it!? I can't even wrap my head around that! That's incredible!

I mostly bang away at the keyboard and see what comes out. Plus, I’ve got years of practice, which helps a lot. And I’m a fast typer.

Then again I have been focused on a very long fanfic as opposed to short ones, so I'm hoping to switch gears to short one shots once I publish my big one.

Long fics will cut into time for short fics. A lot of my shorter fics, especially the comedies, were written in one shot in a couple of hours and published with minimal editing.

Happy new year!

Same to you!

4989944

We shall see what happen s over the course of the year then hrmm?

I can promise The Haunting will finish, there will be updates to OPP, and I’ll publish something silly for ROBCakeran53. Also probably other stuff, too . . . hopefully, of all the teasers I put up there, most if not all of them will get done.

Also, thinking of it, there’s one that’s planned for next St. Patrick’s Day that I’ve got finished (had to hold for a year because reasons). Here’s a snippet of that one:

“Pfft, whatever.” Rainbow waved a hoof. “You're all called Seamus. Why's that?”

“'Tis a traditional Irish name.”

“Sure, yeah, but aren't there any other traditional Irish names?”

“Aye, there's Mickey.” Seamus took off his green top hat and held it to his breast. “But Walt Disney sued the pants off of us even though we had the name first, and now we can't use it. Céard a bhain le mórán de bháisíní airgid airgid.”

4990284
Found you and sent request.

4990295
To add or not to add...

4990295
I got the request and now I’ve got to figure out how to make it work. :derpytongue2:

Applejack’s expression finally got so smug, it slipped off. Fortunately, she was wearing a slightly smaller smug look under the first.

Yep, that's AJ alright. Looking forward to that, OPP and more research blogs. Happy New Year!

2019 needs more OPP.

4990326
That’s a goal I will work on.

4990327
I will love you long time if you do.
...

... ... ... ...
I'll still love you either way.

Dan

4990329

love you long time

I wonder how many folks have actually taken the time to read We Were Soldiers Once, And Young compared to people who watched the various Vietnam Hollywood movies and Ken Burns' honest attempt to sum up that whole shitshow.

4990879
I remember wanting to see the Ken Burns' documentary on the Vietnam war, but never got around to it. While I have heard of We Were Soldiers Once... And Young, I have not read it. I would say most have only seen the Hollywood movies.

Perhaps I should read that book...

Despite being a limey wanker, this guy acknowledges that Tora Tora Tora! is far superior to that Pearl Harbor shite, so he instantly gets a pass.
(Seriously, Pearl Harbor SUCKS!)

4990898
Not a bad channel. Though, I don't fully agree with him on all his points, he seemed to give an intelligent review.

As for Full Metal Jacket, the first 40 minutes are pretty accurate, as far as I can tell.

People are waiting, man!

Specifically, I'm waiting. Me.

I published seven out of ten of my works in progress from last January. That’s not spectacular, not setting the world on fire, but it’s not nothing, either.

it's better than my 0/3 for several years in a row lol.

4991818
I got another 2k or so words down in the draft this morning.

Here’s another teaser, hot off the presses:

“She’s half unicorn,” Rose whispered back.  “That’s why she’s kind of scrawny, too.”

“Technically three-quarters,” Daisy said.  I hadn’t realized that she was close enough to overhear us.

I set my bucket down.  This was interesting. “How does that work?”

“Well, when two ponies love each other very much—“

“Not that.  I know how sex works.”

4991871

it's better than my 0/3 for several years in a row lol.

I feel like here’s where I ought to give an inspirational speech or something, but the best I’ve got is write something and then publish it.

jxj

4992471

but the best I’ve got is write something

yes, that's the part i'm having trouble with

4992554
Well, maybe start out with something small, like a little vignette? Or else do a bit of dialogue between two characters--just the dialogue, script-style, and then think of something to fill that out with.

jxj

4993086
i have a couple short stories planned (thats why it's 0/3 not 0/1) along with a larger points. I have stuff planned out, it's just that I haven't had any luck actually sitting down and writing anything. Maybe this will be the year lol.

4993170
Yeah, that’s a challenge sometimes. If you can get a little bit of time in here or there, you can make quite a bit of progress if you stick to it. More than one of my stories was written in bits and pieces on notebook paper when I had just a little bit of free time.

jxj

4993719
time can be a problem with me, but there's other stuff as well. I've never written anything for pleasure (in fact the only breakdown i've had in school was a writing assignment, although that was poetry), that's the bigger block for me.

4993796
Time is always a factor; there’s always stuff to be doing. As for the other thing, I think it’s easier when you’re doing it for yourself, ‘cause you can do whatever you want to. There’s still a hurdle to publish it online or share it with other people, of course, but for just writing it yourself you can do that with no intent to publish right away, and then let it sit and read over it again later and see what you think of it after it’s had some time to age. There’s no deadline, after all.

I get what you're saying, but that's actually a big block for me. Everything major i've written in my life has had very clear, defined goals (typically externally) and typically with timelines as well. Not having that is daunting in a way.

4996785
I suppose you can set your own goals for the project, although it’s always harder to stick to them if it’s just you enforcing them rather than a teacher who will fail your project if it’s not completed on time.
