Boardwalk Records discography. · 1:50pm Dec 26th, 2018

Boardwalk Records was an independent label formed by Neil Bogart after his unceremonious firing from the highly successful, yet financially troubled Casablanca Records, which he co-founded and had run for a considerably long time. Casablanca was one of the disco powerhouses of the late 1970s, but by 1980, the phrase "disco sucks" had become so widespread that Mr. Bogart decided to use the new Boardwalk label as a vehicle for new wave music. The most consistent hitmaker on the label was a rock band called Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, their biggest hit being "I Love Rock and Roll" (1981), one of the first songs "Weird Al" Yankovic ever recorded a parody of (his parody was titled "I Love Rocky Road") and an early staple of MTV. The other artists who had top-30 hits on the label were Phil Seymour and Tierra; artists such as ex-Beatle Ringo Starr, Chris Christian, and Get Wet hit the lower range of the top-40 with the singles they issued on the label. It also signed artists such as Mike Love (formerly of the Beach Boys), Curtis Mayfield and the Ohio Players, all of whose chart careers, like that of Mr. Starr, had come to, or were coming to, an end. It also issued 707's album MEGAFORCE (the title cut was the theme song of the movie of that name) and the soundtrack for the 1980 film version of POPEYE.

On May 8, 1982, Neil Bogart died in Los Angeles from complications of cancer and lymphoma. His tragic death, at the age of 39, hampered any chance at a significant momentum Boardwalk Records may have had. The following year, Boardwalk Records shut down for good. The catalog was taken over by Tom Ficara of West Jersey Bank, who had held the mortgage on the titles prior to the label going bankrupt. In 1990, Boardwalk received a brief CD-and-cassette-only revival as a subsidiary of Reach Entertainment, most of its releases being of material outside of Night Ranger, Joan Jett and Phil Seymour. (when MCA signed Night Ranger, it took with them the master tapes of the band's Boardwalk album DAWN PATROL; Ms. Jett formed Blackheart Records to control her Boardwalk recordings; Mr. Seymour's manager—Kim Kardashian's father Robert—bought his master tapes sometime in the 1980s and they are now owned by YMC Records). In 2005, the non-Joan Jett, non-Night Ranger, and non-Phil Seymour masters of Boardwalk were sold again, this time to Margate Entertainment (which also owned the RKO Unique masters). This incarnation was known for releasing all new product on DVD. In 2010, Boardwalk was revived by Neil Bogart's sons E.K. and Timothy, and their new partner, Gary Randall; this version of Boardwalk was part of the Boardwalk Entertainment Group and its most notable acts are ZZ Ward and Wallpaper.

The company's label design was always comprised of an oceanic drawing printed atop the label and a sky blue text ring reading "MANUFACTURED BY BOARDWALK RECORDS, INC., A DIVISION OF THE BOARDWALK ENTERTAINMENT COMPANY, LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA." Photo credit: Discogs.

CBS era

Boardwalk Records was initially distributed by CBS, and its first ten albums were issued in the label's normal numbering sequences of the time (the 36500 and 37000 sequences, with the prefix comprised of an F or S price code followed by a W where Z would normally appear; the A suffix was used on 8-tracks and T was used for the far more popular audio cassettes). However, they were packaged differently from CBS' usual releases of the time and used a different UPC code string (0 7912-XXXXX-1/4/8 as opposed to CBS' normal 0 7464-XXXXX-1/4/8 string). Indeed, Boardwalk seemed to only mention CBS through a gold stamp on promotional copies of Boardwalk LPs which read "FOR PROMOTION ONLY - Ownership Reserved by CBS - Sale is Unlawful."

33230 series

In June 1981, Boardwalk went its own way, using a NB1/NB8/NBT 33230 series (take an educated guess as to what the NB prefix might stand for) and pressing its records, depending on the copy, at plants owned by RCA, Specialty Record Corporation (the Warner-owned plant, not the '50s R&B label) and Monarch Records, which meant the copies tended to have a wide variety of diameter rings. However, CBS continued to distribute Boardwalk's LPs and cassettes in Canada and certain other parts of the world until the end.
