She-Ra Reboot, New Job, Wisconsin Life, Fallout 76 · 7:10pm Nov 16th, 2018
Yeah, I talk a little about all the title stuff after the jump.
I'd love to hear from everyone! My update feed has climbed to 9970 individual alerts, so I'm going to be a jerk and ask you all to share whatever personal news or thoughts you have here. I love to hear shtuffs so don't be shy.
So I got done binging through the new She-Ra cartoon. I really, really enjoyed it. I realize that maybe some will complain that it's not anything particularly new or special, but I say poo to that. 1) Diverse cartoons with a wealth of complex female characters is always a good thing. 2) I've always believed this, but I'm really quite tired of the 'artistes' and 'critics' out there who seem to think that any story that fails to reach some level of complexity or abstraction is somehow less in value.
People don't want to admit it, but there are a finite number of relatable stories out there, and while those stories can be imagined in any number of unique ways--at their core, they are repeatable structures of human experience that have echoed throughout time. She-Ra uses a very powerful, but familiar, story arc. A young girl comes out of child-like ignorance to discover a noble destiny. It's Joseph Campbell's "hero's journey" to a tee. At the center of it all is a great rivalry between the protagonist, Adora, and the primary antagonist, Catra. I'm going to be an annoying shit, but I have to point out how their development throughout the season perfectly run parallel to the other as opposites, leading up to a very dramatic conclusion that sees their character arcs fully realized to a satisfying and very well-thought-out completion. Adora learns how to work in a team, realizing that she's stronger WITH others, rather than relying solely on her strength--this causes her to find strength in her compassion and faith in those around her. Catra, on the other hand, overcomes her attachment to Adora, and discovers that she can achieve great and terrible things on her own--thus her narcissism and independence reaches its peak. This is the stuff I keep bringing up in my Overpriced Writing Advice series--many (if not most) effective stories feature the protagonist and antagonist having important similarities!
A second season still has yet to officially be announced, but given the feedback it's getting, I have no doubt Netflix and Dreamworks will have another set of episodes out soon. Now that I've gotten all that out of my system... can I just say that this show is so SO PERFECT for an MLP crossover? It could be 'humans in Equestria' or maybe just a pony version of Etheria, but it would be very easy to work in. Heck, I think it would even be neat to have the characters of Etheria be alien-equines--like reindeer or gazelles. Seriously though, the focus on princesses gives a fairly easy access point.
(My one tiny quibble with She-Ra though: If Entrapta doesn't have a runestone, then why is she considered a princess? Scorpia has one, but she just doesn't have a connection to it. Entrapta literally says she doesn't have one though (if I remember correctly.) Is it too much to ask that this one little conundrum be cleared up??)
In less interesting news, I have a new job. I've now joined the manufacturing industry! Yay! I actually find it's a fairly comfortable job. It's light industry (meaning no heavy duty assembly or materials) so it's fairly easy. I've been working nights though, so it cuts into my personal time. I also see no one else but my son and my co-workers for like four days as it puts me on opposite schedules with husbando and my in-laws. That makes family time more important so I've been prioritizing that on my days off. I have NO idea when I can find a way to squeeze in a reliable writing schedule at this point. I'll keep trying though! Both What They Expect to Give and Her Collar, Her Love are at very exciting places story-wise.
It's started snowing here in Wisconsin where I'm at, but not a great deal, and not that frequently. Last night we had a bit of a flurry, and tonight they expect a little more, but it's predicted we'll have fairly sunny days for a while. I'm NOT looking forward to when it'll reach below 40 degrees.
Fallout 76 is kinda exciting, but kinda not? I mostly just got it in the hopes of playing with my oldest brother in California, BUT if anyone else has a ps4 and would like to play with me, send me a PM and let's connect. I have no idea what I'm doing with this weird perk system, but so far my first character is going in the Strength, Agility, Endurance direction...? I didn't bother looking up "optimal" builds or anything. I really just wanted to have fun tooling around on my own. I hit level 5.
...Yeah. That's about all I got. I feel bad that I managed to finish She-Ra but haven't caught up to MLP at all. I keep hoping they'll put it on Netflix. I HATE watching episodes on DailyMotion. The last one I saw was "The Parent Map". No spoilers please! Another reason I've been avoiding my feed.
Miss you guys!
Miss you too!
It's good to see you around again! It's good that things seem to be settling down in time for the holidays
I keep hearing about this She Ra show, I may have to check it out.

It's pretty good! My family binged on it together. DreamWorks has done a great job taking these 80s IPs and rebooting them. I need to catch up with Voltron. That was awesome as well.
