Highlights from BronyCon 2018: Sunday Morning Shenanigans · 12:52am Nov 5th, 2018

Previous Highlight (Chronological Order): The Grand Galloping Gala

Previous Highlight (Publication Order): "That Game that Nobody Ever Wins"

In which son_of_heaven176 gets some breakfast, misses DRWolf, derps about in the Vendor Hall for a bit, and plays some Prance.

Author’s Note: I know, I know: this isn’t the Highlight that I said would be coming. I did intend to type “Family Feud and the Ponies’ Court,” but as I started typing, I noticed that quite a bit happened before the Family Feud. So enjoy this little interlude, and the next Highlight will focus on Family Feud itself. (Yes, I have decided that Family Feud and the Ponies’ Court will be in two separate Highlights. Family Feud has quite a few details and pictures associated with it, so it would be better to tackle the two events separately.)

Sunday, July 29, 2018: Last Day of BronyCon 2018

After waking up to my alarm clock and making my usual morning preparations, I headed towards the Cosí where I had gotten breakfast on Friday. Unfortunately, the place was closed. I didn’t know of any other restaurants in the area, so I decided to try my luck in the Convention Center. The café outside of Stabletop Games didn’t serve breakfast (and wasn’t open), so I headed further down the Convention Center to the Pratt Street Lobby, where there was a Starbucks booth. Having been to Starbucks cafés before, I knew that one could get a bagel and cream cheese at Starbucks.

Unfortunately, they had run out of plain bagels, so I had to settle for a multigrain bagel. And, of course, no Lipton tea, so I bought their Mint Majesty instead. After trying to get a respectable amount of sugar into my tea (I swear, given how TINY cafés’ sugar packets are, the taste buds of cafés’ usual clientele must be very sensitive to sugar!), I sat down at an empty table. Eventually, someone sat down next to me, and we had a companionable conversation. My conversation partner was from Canada, and I mentioned that I, being Haitian, had family in Quebec. We talked about his trip and about how he worked in a radio studio back in Canada.

Afterwards, I stopped by the Vendor Hall.

(I skipped over the following happenings in the Highlights for Saturday: I had stopped by Stabletop Games to try out the 2:00 PM session of “Dungeons and Dragons: Enter Equestria”. However, I did not know that one needed to sign up for the tabletop RPG sessions in advance! So when I showed up around 2:00 PM, the spots were already full!

I then looked at the schedule for something to do, and I noticed that “Ask the Brony Psychologist” was going on in the Hall of the Stars. “Martial Bronies” was going to be there at 3:30 PM, so this was a good way to kill some time.

After the presentation, and some talk with the psychologist himself, Dr. Pat Edwards, I knew that he and DRWolf needed to meet.

Why am I bringing this up now? Read on.)

Dr. Edwards was also a vendor at the Vendor Hall (he was also an author of a fantasy book that he was selling), and I knew that DRWolf could usually be found by Lightning Bliss’s booth. So I headed to Blissy…only to hear from her that Doc and Teric had already left! I then told Blissy about Dr. Edwards; perhaps she might find a way to bring the two together.

At Blissy’s booth, a brony playing a violin passed by playing all sorts of music. He eventually started playing “Apples to the Core.” That isn’t to say that I recognized it immediately, though: at the first few notes, I knew that the song was familiar, but I didn’t recognize it until he hit the chorus. And even then, I didn’t remember all the lyrics. (You can catch my sonorous baritone in the first 16 seconds of Lightning Bliss’s video from Day 3 of BronyCon. Fortunately for me, she did not catch my face.)

While I was at the Vendor Hall, I got myself a Prance deck and the extra brony-reviewer cards, and got Blissy to autograph the rules card. (Next year, I am going to get another copy of the brony-reviewer cards expressly so that I can collect those reviewers’ autographs. For those of you who are unfamiliar with those extra cards, that means that I will be looking for Firebrand, Eliyora, Silver Quill, DRWolf, and Blissy come BronyCon 2019.) Afterwards, I headed to StableTop Games, where I later got into a game of Prance with DarkWind and some other bronies.

After a few rounds of Prance (and none of Pandemic), I headed out to get some lunch and head to Family Feud.
