Random Super Sentai Trivia Time! · 10:19pm Oct 28th, 2018

Super Sentai Series names can be broken down into three classes: "Ranger" (eg: Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger), "Man" (eg: Chojin Sentai Jetman), and Irregular (eg: Taiyou Sentai Sunvulcan). Here's a breakdown of, to date, how many main canon team have had each class of name:

"Ranger": 28
"Man": 10
Irregular: 6

Click here to see the full list.

(Note: I'm counting Lupinranger vs. Patranger as separate teams; also, any series with a "-ger" name, such as Goseiger or Gokaiger, counts as a Ranger team. Oh, and if my count seems off by a number, well...let's just say the next team's name has been revealed and leave it at that.)

Additional Trivia:

  • "Ranger" teams were not the standard format until Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger. Prior to that, there were only two "Ranger" teams (Himitsu Sentai Goranger and Kosoku Sentai Turboranger), and the standard team naming scheme was the "Man" type.
  • The last team to use the "Man" style name was Seijyuu Sentai Gingaman (1999).
  • The last irregular team name, Tokumei Sentai Go-Busters, appeared 12 years after the previous one (Kyuukyuu Sentai GoGoV), which in turn appeared seventeen years after its predecessor (Dai Sentai Goggle V).
  • The marked preference toward "Ranger" team names began with Zyuranger; given this was the first series adapted to Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers, this is likely not a coincidence.

Wassn't Go-Busters supposed to be a parody of Power Rangers? And isn't the next Sentai being adapted to Power Rangers also Go-Busters?

4959536
No to both. Go-Busters contained numerous homages to Power Rangers, but was a standard Super Sentai Series. Also, Power Rangers skipped Go-Busters and set an ugly precedent in skipping entire series (Go-Busters, ToQger, and Zyuohger have all been skipped).

4959558
If Saban announced it to be so, who are we to disagree?

technically there is only one "ranger" team before Zyuranger as Gorenger is actually spelt with an "E"

4959560
You really don't need to be a dick about it. You could've corrected me without the attitude. I didn't know they were going back to GoBusters; I frankly stopped caring what PR does a while back. I only knew they skipped three really good Super Sentai for logical reasons.

I wonder, is the reason why there are so many "ranger" teams is because of the Power Rangers?

4959564
TECHNICALLY, ALL Ranger teams are spelled with an E. Because "Ranger" is pronounced "reenjaa" in Japanese. Also, your comment is kind of...splitting hairs, and ignores logic.

4959580
It's also gonna be the first Ranger series with Hasbro on board. And we might, might, still get Zyuohger after this. ToQger however.....I doubt. We're not as train dependent as Japan is.

Now that I'm thinking on it, have you been able to keep up with Lupinranger vs Patranger or Kamen Rider? ...I don't blame if you if it's a "no" for Zi-O.

4959590
ToQger is the only one I ever expected Saban to skip, because train culture just isn't that big a thing in America.

I'm behind on LvP by about a dozen episodes, planning to get caught up this week. I haven't watched a single episode of Build, and since Zi-O is currently running, I'm likely to get caught up with it before going back to the last Rider I was actually watching and stalled out on (Ex-Aid).

4959580
I'm sorry if I came off as trying to be a dick. That was far from my intentions.

I honestly lost interest with Power Rangers when they started screwing thing up. A 'Super' season to complete a show? I attempted to watch Super Mega Force, but gave up after a few episodes, but watched the finale. Gokaiger was my favorite series (although, it was the first i watched 90%)

4959610
Well on the bright side.....Zi-O might not make as upset or annoyed as I was since you haven't seen any of Build.

4959624 Yeah, it's part of that really bad contract between Nick and Saban. Under the contract, a season of forty episodes is split into two seasons of twenty episodes, and both must have a non canon Halloween and Christmas special.

4959590 The season was already in pre-production when the merger happened, they already had a cast selected and probably at least an initial adaptation plan. It'll probably be like Wild Force which was in pre-production when Disney purchased Saban. There were a few minor changes (including a likely change to the theme song. There was a demo theme shown in the Fall of 2001 that's different from the one that was ultimately broadcast) and the show eventually switched from Fox Kids to ABC, but Disney's first full show under their tenure wasn't until the next season. The contract with Nick is valid through 2021 at least, unless the merger renders that contract null and void. So it won't be until 2021 at least that Hasbro will have full control of the seasons and adaptation plans for the Sentai footage.

4959558 I don't think there has ever been a season skipped over that they later came back to. In fact, there are plenty of pre Zyuranger series that are likely to never be adapted for Power Rangers considering some of them date back to the 1970's, footage would be difficult to adapt to today's HD screens. While we're at it, outside of the monsters and the White Ranger costume, Dairanger never got adapted for Power Rangers. Supposedly, during Lost Galaxy there were plans to use the Dairanger costumes as the Lost Rangers, but the plans were shelved when Kendrix's actress had to leave the show for leukamia treatment.

Am I the only one that thinks Super Sentai/Power Rangers are basically just magical girl shows targeted at boys?

They all use a "magic" item to transform into their "super hero" form, most of the time complete with a sparkly transformation sequence. Their villains always just so happen to always be in the same town, if not the same neighborhood when they show up. They always have at least one of the following team changes partway through the series: Additional team member arrives unexpectedly, team leader gets a special powerup before everyone else, sidekicks get a powerup after leader gets a SECOND powerup, old villain becomes new ally.

The only real differences are the style of special effects they use and the primary gender of the protagonists.

(Please note that I'm not saying this is a bad thing. I just think it's interesting how similar the two genres are.)

4959661
Well apparently they are going back to Go-Busters.

Am I the only one that thinks Super Sentai/Power Rangers are basically just magical girl shows targeted at boys?

Yes, you are, but it's easy to understand why you'd think that. It's because Bishoujo Senshi Sailormoon redefined the "magical girl" genre into something closer resembling Super Sentai. Prior to Sailormoon, "magical girl" meant something else entirely (look up Creamy Mami or Hime-chan's Ribbon).

By the time Sailormoon came along and spawned the new era of battle-oriented magical girls, Super Sentai had already been around for close to 20 years.

And Saban did have his eyes on Bioman and Jetman before Zyuranger, so there was plenty of opportunity for Toei to hear the name, or at least a development name with the word Ranger in the title.

4959925
Yeah, word is he tried to adapt Jetman but something went wrong, then he finally succeeded with Zyuranger. I think the thing that went wrong with Jetman had something to do with the English adaptation of the Gatchaman anime? But don't hold me to that, it's just a thing I half-remember reading many years ago.

4959661
....okay then. Thanks for the info.
