Fic recs, April 22nd: Jordan179 edition

Once again, though a good bit late, I bring it upon myself to memorialize an author via reviews of their stories. Though this time, it's different, as I had no connection to Jordan179 and only learned of his passing (three years ago this month, coincidentally), from this post

Another post about video games and Youtube and stuff

If I'm going to waste time watching shit on Youtube, the least I can do is tell people about it. :P

Ceave is a crazy Austrian with a love of video games and a head for philosophizing about them. Plus he really, really hates coins, no matter how tasty they may look.

Do you like video games? How about philosophy?

I like one of those things for sure, but no one combines the two better than a Youtuber named InfernalRamblings, a former professional game developer who now creates hour and a half long video essays about the meanings of video games and how they relate to the world today. Here's a few highlights, since this is now basically my only

The Starlight & Pals Magical Half Hour by Cold in Gardez and GaPJaxie
Paid Review for Cold in Gardez
Genre: Philosophical/Comedy Anthology
So a while back, CiG and GaPJaxie were writing silly… like, episode take-downs? New episodes? I dunno, funny blogs about Starlight and co., and they have compiled them here for all and sundry to view. The G5 label serves as merely an excuse for two authors to riff on the show, then collate everything into a post. What's weird is I felt a bit lied to: this starts off in hilarious form, just taking off of everything Starlight- or Twilight-related in the show. Then they start discussing philosophy, which was also funny at first. I mean, that's just not something ponies do in the show. Then this starts getting really deep into just "ponies discuss philosophy" territory. And I started getting worried, because most of the humor in the first couple chapters comes from Starlight being a sociopath, but it seems later like the story wants you to agree with her ethics. Also, she turns into a dragon once for some reason, and that was pretty funny. I don't know if the collection is complete, but the final entry as I write this is hilarious, and there's also in-universe Star Wars fanfiction, so I'd say the good definitely outweighs the bad, and it's worth reading for some ha-has.

Super Machiavelli Girl Lyrical Golden Pinafore Daedalus Alpha Tres Cross Delta Xrd Championship Edition Accent Core Plus R Ex Gold 2.8 Redux Go!!! by anonpencil
Genre: EQG Anime Nonsense
Duchess Celestipaws goes on a mission to another world to find the next Magical Sailor Girl.
If you see a title like that and do not immediately assume shortskirts is somehow involved… I guess that means you don't know anything about shortskirts. <.< But yes! This is a part of anonpencil's current wave of story commissions, and no points for guessing who the commissioner was! Anyway, to get to the actual review, I would like to WHAT IN THE SHIT. Okay, if you know anything about skirts, this does make sense as a kind of summation of a long, strange spiral into strangeness. Just read the description. It all makes sense, I swear.
What?

Drops of Jupiter by PaulAsaran
Genre: Sci-Fi/Experimental
The Explorer searches through the cosmos, for Magic and friendship.
Man, I always wanted to write a story called Drops of Jupiter, but dumb ol' canon kinda got in the way and also I'm lazy. :/ Anyway, it wouldn't have been anything like this, nor, I imagine, quite as good. This is an intense and fanciful dose of imagery, all of it cosmic, some of it confusing, as Twilight… Well, I honestly don't want to describe any of this. I think the fun here is in discovery, just as Twilight herself is discovering the universe. If this does anything well, it's reveling in that sense of discovery, of amazement at things new and excitement at possibility. It's a really singular piece, and I'm happy to have been one-upped by it.

Fishboobs vs. Ghost Penis by Rethewa
Mature: Sex
Genre: Sexual Comedy
Adagio is awoken by… Yeah, there's no way to dance around it, it's a ghostly penis.
A few days ago, Rethewa chimed in on the blog I posted a while back announcing the publication of Fadoodling. "I used that word in a story!" they said. "What story?" I asked. The answer was… this. A more madcap sexual comedy I don't know I've ever seen; this fic knows it's goddamn ridiculous, and absolutely marinates in it. The only thing that bothered me was the rampant lesbianism, entirely because the Sirens are supposed to be sisters. Which, y'know, I was fine to accept as merely side-canon until the story pointed it out. Ultimately, this was not enough to diminish my enjoyment of the story, which maybe says terrible things about me.

He Come to Town by FanOfMostEverything
Genre: Legend of Zelda Crossover/Comedy
It's time for Brave Heart to stop acting like he's the only hero in Equestria.
Had to read this, given the tile reference to the song that was not by System of a Down. >:B Anyway, remember that one time Link Pony trotted by in the background? This is a story about him. And you won't believe where it takes him, unless of course you read the character tags ahead of time, but don't do that, I highly approve. But yes, a comedy about the CMCs trying to find Link Pony a job in Ponyville, with plenty of shenanigans. It's great. :)

That is one juicy, succulent review :pinkiehappy:

And yeah, I can see being put off by the sirens being sisters. I, like literally haven't ever thought of them as not being related famillially, though, so... yeah, gonna keep writing them that way. I can appreciate how this might have one of those cases where leaving it unstated would've been a smart, tho

I got a unique rating! YAY!
I thank Skirts for that.

Six hour turnaround? Dang. I should write video game crossovers more often.

No, you should make references to old memes more often. :V

I know!

Clearly I don't know Skirts well at all because I was sure that could only be a Super Trampoline fic title

4958937
I took one look at the cover art and knew it was Skirts. Easy peasy.

Yeah, admittedly, you need the Flash Sentry cover to sort out the skirts from the Trampoline.

Site staff more or less banned me from super long titles.

I come home from an all-day outing and what do I find but my fic with an H on it. Oh, P2, you know how to make me :pinkiehappy:.

I still feel a little guilty for one-upping you, though.

I wanted to write a story about Twilight exploring the universe because she'd just emerged from a hundred-year long sleep inside a magical cocoon that turned her into an alicorn after the series ended. <.< You perhaps see my problem.

4959255
Not really. AUs, y’know? If canon don’t fit your story, throw canon the finger and do it anyway. Odds are good whatever you make will be superior because, let’s face it, the show creators can’t grow the show for shit right now.

I've spent so long following canon closely, I can't leave it alone anymore. D:

Aside from the stuff I just don't acknowledge. :B

4959263
I don’t understand, but whatever works (or in this case, doesn’t) for you.

As far as I’m concerned, anything Season 6 and beyond isn’t canon, it’s ‘official fanfiction’.

I draw the line at season 7. I think 6 and 7 still had original show writers in there somewhere.
