The things the holiday seasons bring about · 10:33pm Oct 26th, 2018

So, I recently started thinking about how cats have places in our lore and mythologies. And I have a few questions regarding that, the biggest one being, “What is with our fascinations over cats?” And by that, I mean humans, as a collective species, seem to have this amazing enamourment with cats on some level. If they aren’t mystical in mysterious or potentially awe-inspiring ways then they’re the entities that are demonized and treated as a force of evil. Think about it, they say if a black cat crosses our path it’s bad luck, I hear in England it’s bad luck if a white cat crosses your path. And it seems several mainland European countries have their own superstitions regarding cats and luck. In Ireland and Scotland, there are tales of a cat with fey properties, some stories call them fairies, known as Cait Sith and Cath Palug. Many people are now aware of the Japanese lore, and dear lord do they have a lot of lore and myths regarding a variety of cats, one of the most prominent being the Nekotama. During the Colonial era cats, especially black ones, were demonized as the companions and familiars of witches and warlocks. And in today’s modern culture people seem to go nuts over cat videos.

So, I ask again, what is with our fascination over cats? Why do so many cultures have stories about cats having supernatural powers and abilities?

And hey, you never know what kind of inspirations for projects, especially stories, you can find.

There might be a biological component. Watch below

I feel that our fascination is partially due to cats never being truly “domesticated”. Dogs, Goats, Sheep, etc were specially bred and collected, while cats simply inserted themselves into human communities and our lives
