Another Review And The Ideas It's Given Me · 12:16am Oct 19th, 2018
Well, Between Bassdrops and Bowstrings got a Second Opinion. It wasn't great, but it wasn't bad. It was filled to the brim with potential, and the reviewer made some astounding points. They were polite, concise, and -- best of all -- they offered help.
So, here's what's bubbling through my mind now. Mind you these are just ideas; things that're bouncing around in my brain that I feel like getting onto something and hearing the response from the crowd.
The big thing is what I said in the Review itself: I'm considering rewriting Bassdrops and Bowstrings from the ground up, and moving the "old" BBaB to it's own section, so fans of the original can enjoy it at their leisure. I know there are some who adamantly defended the original story and that's why I've considered this. I'm a bit of a crowd pleaser and that's because I want to write stories that my readers love -- But I also aim to write the best stories I possibly can. By expanding this Fic into more chapters, breaking it up into "Arcs" like Curify suggested, and streamlining a lot of the story into a loser, less constrictive narrative, I think I might be able to make this Fic even more enjoyable.
But I don't want to upset the people who loved the old Fic. So I want to save it somehow, so everyone can enjoy the original as it was, before it's editing.
What do you guys think of all that? It'll be a big project, and will likely mean even more delays on the stories I've been struggling with... But it also means that my biggest, most popular Fic will get a complete overhaul. Tell me what you think below.

Same here. It's made me realize that, while my Fic is good, it has the potential to be great! If I expand the story and add in new chapters, I could explore things previously left unsaid as well. I only have one chapter with Octavia and Vinyl as fillies, for example. If I broaden it, it could be three or four chapters, where Octavia slowly learns about her skills as a musician and earns her place in Echo's eyes.

The hardest part of writing, in my eyes. I tried writing a straight comedy story, and I just couldn't do it. It was called "Chaos: It's What's for Dinner" and it was basically the Season 7 episode Discordant Harmony, but I was writing it back in Season 5.
The main idea is that Discord starts to realize, what with how the world works, true Chaos could never actually reign. If Chaos ruled, it would become normal, and that would mean it's not chaotic anymore. If abnormal becomes the new normal, then does the old normal become abnormal? It was going to have Discord going through an existential crisis, while pestering the Mane 6, Celestia, and Luna to have them tell him that he's important and powerful.

I am fully in support!! Writing a longfic like this... Even over the course of a first draft, style and prose will change significantly. If this is your love letter, I say it's worth every bit of elbow grease to make it shine. It's hard to match writing to one's own standards.

Same story and plot points, but spread more evenly, I'm thinking. The story itself doesn't need to be changed, just made more broad. I'll need to expand their childhood; that'll be the biggest change.

Understood. Life has so totally gotten in the way of my fic, but by the end of November I'll no longer be working six days per week. ugh. I'll try to get back to Bassdrops and Bowstrings. I was doing so with yours and with Spectrum of LIghtning by Seriff Pilcrow (because he commissioned my daughter for art)
I think this is a great idea, and the fact that you want to keep us invovled is great. I know of authors that wont give any warning and just do it. But you arnt like them. Do what makes you happy because in the end, only you can be the true judge of yourself.

Agreed, but a Fic isn't just about me, now is it? It's about my readers too. A Fic is nothing if not for it's readers, and that's a fact most authors forget.
