Hello there. I'm certain that some of you are wondering what an EM2 is. The EM2 (or BR Class 77) is a class of electric locomotive built in 1957 for the Woodhead route in Northern England. This line ran between Sheffield in Yorkshire and Manchester in Lancashire, and was unusual in that it was electrified to 1500 V DC, instead of the more common 25 kV AC. 7 EM2s were built for passenger work, but were withdrawn in 1970 following the termination of passenger services beyond Hadfield, a suberb of Manchester. They were then sold to Dutch Railways, as they used 1500V DC, and had a chronic shortage of locomotives. They continued working there until 1986, when they were withdrawn due to their advanced age. 3 were preserved, of which 2 were repatriated; Ariadne can be seen at the Manchester Museum of Science and Industry, still in Dutch colours, Electra can be seen at the Midland Railway Centre near Derby, restored to original BR Black, and Diana, currently cared for by the 1500 Group in Holland.
That's all for now. See you later!
