I really didn't like this episode, mainly because of how much of a right a-hole Spike's father was. I still can't believe that dragons are still getting the short end of the stick and being portrayed as dicks who only care about getting ahead in life. Although I will say that it was rather heartwarming to see Spike and Smolder interact. Honestly, I'd go as far as to consider them long lost siblings.

I liked the Spike-Smolder interaction. The rest of the episode was kind of meh.

Ok, I know dragons can be dicks most times, but at least they got the balls to do it straight to your face. This was a straight up mooch.

SHIP, SHIP, SHIP, SHIP, SHIP, SHIP, SHIP, SHIP, SHIP, SHIP, SHIP, SHIP, SHIP, SHIP, SHIP.

Was that Spike's dad? That dragon lied.

Why Spike have no wings? Did they really forget that that happened?

4933798
Honestly, I didn't care enough about the episode to really pay attention to that.

4933812
So you don't like the episode because of Spike's dad, who never appears in it...
Smolder makes it clear that dragons are not meant to behave like a leach btw.

Arent spike should have wings?

This episode seems to support the idea that Twilight and Spike have a mother-child relationship. I know that's what fans have been imagining all along, but haven't they been keeping that pretty ambiguous until now.:twilightsheepish:

This episode confirms that Twilight is Spike’s mother, just like I always imagined! I mean the brother and sister idea some people had was okay, but mother and son is way better.

I also like how Smolder acts like a big sister to Spike, teaching him to fly and standing up for him against Sludge. Spike seems to have a great family. Also, when Ember hears what Sludge did to Spike she is going to make sure he pays for it!

4933815
never question the hateboners - sorry, "dislikerections" of people

A Spike episode!!!

Spike, I am your father. Mwahahahahahaha! O3O

I knew something wasn't right about Sludge the moment he appeared. There's no way in hell that freeloading asshole is Spike’s dad.

I like pillows too! I have a big and fluffy one and I always sleep like a puppy while cuddling it! It also helps me with my snuzzling habits. ^3^

What I've learned from this episode.
1. Never trust strangers.
2. Be who you are.
3. Always stick with your friends and family. As long as they don't stab you in the back.

4933908

I knew something wasn't right about Sludge the moment he appeared. There's no way in hell that freeloading asshole is Spike’s dad.

Why not? Twilight and Starlight freeload off him.

4933812
well maybe if you pay attention instead of sleeping over important details, you would like the episode more.

A great episode that should lead into more things down the road with Spike finding his long lost mother as well as his actual father. I was hoping though to see Spike lash out at the bastard when he found out that this son of a bitch wasn't in fact his father, I know it's a kids show and they are limited to what they can do in the actual show when it comes to violence or stuff like that, but by god I wanted to see Spike beat the stuffing out of the dragon who claimed to be his father in the end.

The only thing I didn't like about this episode was that we found out Rainbow Dash wasn't helping or mentoring Spike in flying, Twilight even offered to go get her but Spike declined. Ever since Spike got his wings I wanted to see how Rainbow Dash would react to this and more importantly the interactions between the two characters would be as Dash helps Spike in flying. I wanted to see reactions of Spike now having wings from all the Mane Six but wanted to see it more with Rainbow a Dash since she's the wonderbolt and high flyer of the group.

I like what they are doing with Spike and Smolder. Spike's no longer the only dragon that's civil in Equestria, and he has someone to identify with him while showing how to be a dragon since Ember is busy. Smolder is supportive of Spike without babying him, and she calls out nonsense like that BS Sludge was feeding Spike. The few gripes I have lies with Mane six. All just accepted sludge word about being Spike's father. There was no paternity test or even an ounce of suspicion. A dragon pops out of nowhere and claims to be Spike's long-lost father, and no one said 'Hey, you're full of it'? Applejack has no excuse since she can tell when someone is lying. She should've caught that crap straight away.

It was a missed opportunity for the girls to grow closer to Spike since it rare that Spike connects with any of them besides Twilight and Rarity. Their characters have evolved to the point where they would be more conscious of one another. they did it in the Mean SIx episode, so why not this one? I guess the focus was more on Smolder fulling that role, but I digress. And it's messed up that after Sludge used Spike, he walks away scot free with no punishment what so ever. All and all, I'd give this episode a 7.5 out of 10. I loved the interactions with Spike and Smolder yet hated how the Mane Six were undermined.

I remember when I saw the title of the episode and I thought " I wonder if this episode was going to air on Father's Day" and then " What if the said Father Dragon was not actually Spike's dad but a crystal thief and wanted to steal the elements of harmony by using Spike and throw him out at the end?" Yeah, I don't think that scenario will make it past the sensors.

4933947

All just accepted sludge word about being Spike's father.

Did you miss the litany of questions they threw at Sludge during his spiel? They were plenty skeptical about his story. Twilight in particular caught on to him being a bad influence, and confronted Spike about it. But Spike had stars in his eyes, and no one could shake them until the end of the episode.

Applejack has no excuse since she can tell when someone is lying.

That is pure fanon.

4933865
Do Spike never considered Twilight as his mother in the episode? No he don't :ajbemused:

While the Spike and Smolder interactions was fine but the rest of the episode could be a lot better.

4934105
I can’t tell what you tried to say, but by the end of the episode it is clear Twilight is Spike’s “real parent”, making her his mother.

Spike, i love you bro, but i have to say, you done goofed.

breaking princess Twiggles' heart like that, the same mare that practically raised you, is not cool bro.

no Rarity plushie for a month.

4933947
I was wondering, isn't it odd that the castle of friendship will assign missions because a restaurant isn't getting enough business, or somepony doesn't write his mother often enough, but it doesn't just go off like a car alarm the moment paternity fraud occurs inside it's doors.

I'm thinking maybe the castle is not omniscient, instead it connects to the tree of harmony, which literally has roots spreading under every part of equestria, and now beyond. It probably can't listen to everything at once, so it uses empathy and reacts to 'saddness' maybe. Since nopony was sad yet, it misses things like villainous plots and schemes in planning.

4934127
That's not true. Spike considered Twilight as his family, he never called her his mother.

Usually the Map seems to call people whenever the problem seems to have effects on the nearby "environment" rather than for more personal reasons.

Not always but that's what it usually feels like.

4934174
Every time they get sent on a mission there are repercussions for the larger community beyond the individual problem they solved. They didn't just save a single restaurant from going under, but reinvigorated the entire Canterlot culinary scene, inspiring all the other restaurant owners to get back to following their passions and creating a rich diversity instead of the bland conformity Zesty Gourmand had imposed. The map saw harmony calcifying into stagnant order, and sent Pinkie and Rarity off to course correct.

As for why it doesn't react to Sludge's fraud, the map definitely seems to have some future reading ability. It can see where things are starting to go wrong and will create trouble down the line, and nip developing problems in the bud. It probably saw that the main characters would wrap this up on their own without it needing to get involved. The problem was already on track to resolve itself.

Twilight Sparkle: I can't believe I overlooked something as simple as feathers. It's no wonder you were having trouble. I wish I had more "dragonish" knowledge to give you. Do you think being raised by ponies has affected you in other ways?

* * *

Spike: Actually, I was orphaned as an egg, and Twilight raised me. So these ponies are more than my friends. They're my family.

* * *

Sludge: Sure! I'm not surprised you don't know any better. Twilight basically raised you as a pony. You're barely a dragon at all.

* * *

Twilight Sparkle: You never acted like that.
Spike: That's because you raised me. Now I finally have a chance to see how I'm supposed to be.
Twilight Sparkle: I don't think you're supposed to be any different than who you are.
Spike: Maybe you just don't like that I have a real parent now.

* * *

Spike: I don't think so. I already know who my real family is.
Twilight Sparkle: Aww! It's me, right?

(italics in the original; underlines added)

Noscitur a sociis - a word is known by the company it keeps. The episode is about parents. Spike compares Twilight to his "real parent," implying that she is a "fake parent," as it were. He and Sludge refer to her "raising" him, while Twilight is more circumspect and talks about Spike being "raised by ponies." Face it: the episode wants to push the idea that their relationship is akin to mother and child.

But take heart! For the showrunner has a loose hold on the reins and allows myriad contradictions. Some other episode will push another view. Way back in Season One Spike uttered the words "you're not Mommy," which seem to have been forgotten in this episode.

4934391
You seem to get it. There are episodes where Spike and Twilight act like they have a brother and sister relationship, but there are episodes where Spike and Twilight act like they have a mother and son relationship depending on the writer. Let's say their relationship is very complicated.

4934391
It is hard to believe that twilight and Spike have a mother-child relationship, considering it was a filly when he was born, and she has never acted at the level of a mother, but being honest, the show has never been clear about what kind of relationship they have , in an episode Twilight tells Spike that they are friends, in another that they are family (do not specify), even in one of the comic, Spike is presented as his first friend

People seem to be set on Spike and Twi being either sibling or parental, but I and Josh Scorcher seem to be the only ones that think maybe they're closer to a sibling relationship where both parents are gone, so the older one is left to take care of the younger, like Nani and Lilo from "Lilo and Stitch."

That aside, my thoughts were that it was a good Spike episode where a lot of bad things happened...or mabye a bad Spike episode where Spike was portrayed well. It could go either way. Unlike other bad Spike episodes, where Spike is usually the cause of the problem, here Spike was dealing with a problem as best he could, but it just happened to be a bad episode.

4934432

That doesn't make any sense, since Twilight's parents aren't gone.

Technically speaking, you could say that since they moved to Ponyville, Twilight has been raising Spike, even if she's not necessarily "mommy" to him, since he still isn't an adult. (I'm just glad Spike isn't going to start calling Twilight "mom", in any case)

It's been a complicated state of affairs from the get-go.

The HMS Smolder-Spike is ready to sail, Captain!

Okay, all I can do for this episode is list the pros and cons

Pros:

-Excellent interactions with Spike and Smolder
-Funny bait-and-switch before the intro
-Pinkie. Just Pinkie. She was good here :rainbowlaugh:

Cons:
-Sludge. Just Sludge. Fuck that guy
-They didn't even at least drop a subtle hint on who or where Spike's real parents are (This is why we have fanfics, at least.).
-I'm not sure I even like the song, catchy melody and music notwithstanding
-The fact that Sludge ran off without any comeuppance pisses me off.

I didn't particularly like this episode, but I was glad to finally get some confirmation on what Twilight's relationship to Spike is.
Smolder was cool too.

Dan

Pretty predictable episode, TBH.

4934391
Uh yeah back in season 1, as the show progressed, Spike and Twilight’s relationship also changed. The line of ‘your not mommy’ doesn’t apply anymore as this episode confirms that Twilight and Spike see each other as parent and child, Twilight’s reaction to Spike telling her “maybe you don’t like it now that I have a real parent.” Literally broke her heart and she was about to break out in tears. She does consider herself his mom and so does Spike, this episode was really hammering that point.

4934486
She is mommy to him and Twilight has been raising Spike since before she got to ponyville, Her line to Pinkie Pie about how babies take a lot of hard word tells us that she has taken care of a baby before and knows how difficult in can be.

4933922
That won’t be happening at all since Spike himself stated that he has no interest since he knows who his real family is, Twilight herself gave him that option. Also like Spike pointed out, how will his parents know that he was a boy? The writers specifically wrote it this way to point that out.

4934127
Exactly! I’m glad someone understood this.

4933865
They have been building up for this through the seasons, I always felt their relationship was that of a mother and child, and I’m happy that I was right. If that wasn’t the case why would the writers use the word parent in this episode and repeatedly bring up the fact that Spike was raised by Twilight?

4933856
So true, they were tip toeing around the issue of their relationship until now. They even commissioned a comic about Twilight raising Spike that’s canon.

4934176
He considers her his parent, therefore his mother.

I liked this episode. Nice to see Spike learning more about flying. Also I liked all the interaction between Spike and Smolder throughout the episode. Sludge was an unusual bad guy, haven't seen a lot of villainous characters who are just using one of the main characters to mooch off of in this show. Definitely glad that jerk wasn't actually Spike's father. Pretty good episode, but at this point the previous episode is still my favorite of the season.

4934721
There has been no change in their relationship because it was never defined what kind of relationship they have, it is obvious that writers never cared, and so there is so much confusion, in some episodes the writers say they are friends, in others say they are family, in Equestria girls they have a pet-master relationship

4934740
How about you don't try to force your opinion down people's throats :ajbemused:

4934745
They were slowly making their way to this and some people do consider pets like their children, and there’s nothing wrong with parents being friends with their children. They hoofpumbed when Spike got a better handling on his flying thanks to Smolder.

Watching it right now... He's too dramatic. Totally a con-man. Er, dragon. Whatever. He's got that car salesman vibe going on...
