    The Knife’s Edge

The other day I got a message from ZanarNaryon telling me they had created a TVTropes page for To Serve In Hell. Now, TVTropes can be a dangerous place to start reading, unless you have a few hours to spend getting lost in it. But if you want to check it out, please

Not with a bang, but a whimper

    Hey friends.

I didn’t used to believe in writer’s block as such. I always thought the phenomenon was a manifestation of something else in a person’s life. I also thought the cure for it was just to sit down and write any garbage you can. Editing should never mix with drafting, and if you can get yourself to stop editing, you’ll achieve more and better drafting—which can then be edited.

Ping 2: Live and In Person

Almost exactly 2.5 years ago, my family and I bought tickets to Whinny City Pony Con 2020. Of course there was no such con, at least not in a physical capacity. But good egg that he is, Charlie Worthley (con organizer extraordinaire) has made it effortless to transfer our tickets from that long-ago time to right now, despite all that’s transpired between.

    Ping

    I live.

    Time's gotten away from me.

2020 got weird. My 2021 started with an honest effort to get back to normal. But after I started getting treated for depression, I began to see more and more ways to improve things in my daily and family life that hadn't fit together very well in years. Including some of the core issues that had pointed me in the direction of MLP in the first place.

    Artistic Expression

It's been too long. Things are great. Really, really great. Not so much for writing, but for different modes of expression and life.

Last time I posted a tease of things to come. Since then I've had a couple unexpected things pop up. Good ones. Including the long-awaited best one:

My mojo's back. :rainbowwild:

This picture is titled "Daring Do Witnessing Stalwart Stallion's Power."
I'm just... I'm gonna go with that.

For various reasons I've spent much the last year struggling to achieve liftoff on projects not directly tied to an active Writeoff. Finishing and doing a first edit on the rest of To Serve In Hell pushed me well past my limits. Sad pandas all around.

But then, just in the last little bit, I've started cranking out truly new stuff. Right now I've just got a few entries in Shakespearicles' Starlight Fixes Everything project, which I'll be sticking in my shorts collection straight away (obligatory e-beg: follow for updates!!). But I also was fortunate enough to beg a deadline extension from Oroboro for his latest Sunset Shipping Contest, and by thunder, I'm getting in a story for it.

Time travel is one of the central themes of Starlight Fixes Everything. Timeline flexibility is the whole point of a deadline extension. And so that brings me to another minor bit of temporal shenanigans: my upcoming fic Technical Ecstasy (or: Party Princess Shining Bright) is likely to jump ahead of my other upcoming fic Bra Quest!, purely due to where they're at in the editing process. At the time I put out the tease, I honestly thought Bra Quest! was going to be done first. But then Technical Ecstasy pulled in some assistance from the one and only Georg, and that's all she friggin' wrote. Better to get Technical Ecstasy out soon since it's ready, and circle back around to Bra Quest! after I get the Sunset Shipping Contest thing done.

But here I go taking my stuff too seriously again. Plans? Schedules? This is ponyfic! Who cares about plans and schedules?

Rarity cares, darling

I'unno. Truth is... I feel good again, and I know better than to think that's a permanent state or feeling. 2017 knocked me on my rump, kicked me inna fork, and left me with the bill. 2019 heralds the end of MLP as we know it. But now? Right now? I'm here. You're here. And I'm gonna write some ponyfic for ya. And it's gonna be good. Or at least as good as I can possibly make it.

Money back guarantee on that one. :derpytongue2:

At least it's only the end of MLP as we've known it.

Glad to hear you're back on the proverbial horse.

I, for one, feel fine. :derpytongue2:

I'm glad to be back on it, too. Of course I'd rather show it than just brag about it, but some days you just gotta speak how you're feeling, y'know?

As for the end of Pony: I'm not feeling entirely fine about, but I might be starting to move toward the Acceptance stage of grief. I guess... I know I've got some fics I want to get out before the curtain falls. Beyond that, I'm not worrying too much, at least for now.

Well, all good things. But that doesn’t mean the fandom or fiction writing community will die down. If anything, it’ll be able to pick up some, since nopony will have to worry about a random episode murdering their headcannon.

As long as I have my spine and my orange Crush, I don’t think I’m going anywhere.

All I mean is that there's a new incarnation coming down the line, about 2 years after the curtain call, and I can't see a reason not to be happy about that.
