    What. (Frenemies spoilers, kind of)

Okay, so obviously I'm going to be making a blog post about season nine, especially since Frenemies is pretty much the best episode the show's ever had. And I know it's also kind of late for me to post this compared to my usual times.

But while I was writing it, I found something out, and it's legitimately freaking me out.

I've cracked the code on season nine

Cozy Glow is the Storm King reborn.

That's why she's so obsessed with getting control of a bunch of followers and taking over everything, she's just continuing from where she left off. Same reason she wants to be Queen, she's just getting her title back (adjusted to fit her new body).

Final Part One, Subtitles Update (More big spoilers, etc.) · 11:46pm Aug 28th, 2018

Okay, again, talking about the finale. Spoilers, etc, here's your one chance to leave.

Still here?

Okay, let's see then.

My interpretation of Neighsay was right; he has nothing to do with Cozy Glow, and she is in fact pissed that he's taking over 'her' school.

What's more interesting is Tirek and Cozy Glow were, apparently, working together. As he says, they were penpals, and he's the one who told her how to steal Equestria's magic.

Of course, I have to note that he doesn't actually say her name. He says "Her name is..." and then it cuts to Sandbar saying "Cozy Glow!". So hey, my theory that she's Chrysalis could still work. Plus, why would she risk giving him her real name? Actually, if I really wanted to get into conspiracy stuff, the writers know that the last three seasons or so have been 'spoiled' for us in America by international airings weeks ahead of our schedule, and they also know that these other channels don't air the finales back-to-back. So again, if I really wanted to wear a tinfoil hat, I could say they purposefully wrote it like this to be a real cliffhanger for us fans obsessed enough to watch versions in a language we don't speak.

Now, the really interesting part: Cozy Glow's speech. It suffers a bit from the translation (no offense to the subbers, great work for a fan effort put together in a few hours), so part of it seemed weird.

The strange thing is that she says something like "it will take time for the magic to be emptied so I can take it to another world". Which makes it sound like she's from another world and is taking it back there for some reason. Except she then goes on to talk about how Equestria will bow before her, so I'm leaning towards something having gone missing in the translation there.

Let's go through some parts of her speech, shall we?

"You ponies have it all wrong, you know."

Uh huh... you ponies...

"Friendship isn't magic. Friendship means more power!"

Alright.

"Now that Twilight and her gang are out of my way, Equestria will bow before me!"

Sure. (I kept the mistranslation in because I like the idea of them being a gang.)

"As the uprising Queen of Friendship!"

Okay then.

Now, I'm not saying Cozy Glow apparently not being a pony and being power obsessed and declaring she'll be Queen and Tirek almost but not quite saying her name means she's actually Chrysalis, but...

I mean, for one thing, there was already a character this season who declared their goal was to become Queen again. Maybe it's just me, but it seems a bit... confusing? Unclear? Muddled? Sending mixed signals? Something like that, if now there's suddenly a second character with the same plan.

It also fits in with Twilight's whole "If our friendship can survive this, it can survive anything!" quote from the end of The Mean Six as Chrysalis flies away. On top of which, this plan is pretty much Chrysalis's exact plan: she took away Starlight's friends while she watched.

And on that topic, don't forget this little exchange from that episode:

Chrysalis: "I know better than to attack alone. With my army gone, I need—"
Evil Twilight: "Friiiiiieeeends?"
Chrysalis: "Servants!"

Followed by the end of the episode:

Chrysalis: "Servants always fail you in the end."

How amazing would it be if Chrysalis actually took that advice? She's realized she can't get what she wants with servants, so now she's going for friends. And it's working, too; the students seem to actually really like her. But, being Chrysalis, she has to take it so far over the top she ends up in orbit, and now she's going to become a friend-dictator. Frientator?

I actually really like that idea, because it's really easy for Twilight to just go "Look, you don't need to take over everything. If you're that nice, they'll give it to you willingly and happily." I also love it because it's so Chrysalis to have "Being friends with everyone" part of "Evil plan that destroys my enemies and magic in Equestria."

Speaking of that, making magic not work in Equestria. Sounds a lot like a certain ancient dark stone she once carved, doesn't it? She's just setting up a new kingdom here.

Here's a cool idea about the magic: what if Tirek planned all of this? He tells this penpal how to drain all of Equestria's magic, knowing that Twilight, at least, will come to see what he's up to. He can then bargain for his freedom, which is how it looks like this is going. Then once he's outside of Tartarus? Boom. He activates the part of the spell he didn't tell Cozy about, absorbing all the magic she's collected.

Obviously the plan hinges on them making the connection that he's behind it, and him being able to convince them to let him out, which is a crapshoot at best. But even if they didn't, he'd be taking away Equestria's magic. Win-win.

Also, as people keep pointing out in comments I've been reading, Cozy's obligatory villainous laugh that the episode ends on seems to change as it goes on, sounding deep and older. I gotta wonder if it's turning into Chrysalis's laugh; unfortunately, I'm not familiar enough with the Dutch actors to be able to tell.

The statue from the leaked assets makes me worried, though. Obviously the big worry is that if Cozy is Chrysalis and gets reformed, she'll transform. But given that it was Cozy in that statue, I'm also worried that they might do something like having the magic-draining spell backfire on her, and permanently trap her as Cozy. Not to insult the writers, but again, I really hope they're not stupid enough to do something like that to Chrysalis. Unless that statue in season nine is a sign of her making an absolutely badass reappearance after getting her magic back and saving the day.

Actually, my real guess, reinforced by the fact that Cozy is an amazing assistant to Twilight at the school, is that Chrysalis will end up as vice-principal. Which is kind of disappointing, still; obviously I still want her to get her throne back.

I wonder if this whole season has been building up to reforming her without transforming her. As I said before, it seems really weird to build a whole season around "everycreature can be our friend!" only to go "NO. NO BLACK CHANGELINGS. Transform or else." when Chrysalis wants to be nice. I could see Neighsay's whole attitude, especially him calling the Student Six monsters, to play into that.

Also, I just gotta say... I can't really see Cozy Glow not being Chrysalis after this episode. At the least, she can't be a filly. Her attitude, her rage, are too extreme to work as a child. Not to mention that she corresponded with Tirek to learn how to drain magic from Equestria, somehow cast the spell herself using the six magical artifacts from A Matter of Principals (did not see that one coming) and captured Starlight. It just... doesn't work if she's just a normal filly.

Although, there's no real telling. I mean, they have all of mythology to draw from; I remember when I thought the Sirens were changelings during the first trailers for Rainbow Rocks. For all we know, Cozy could be a Gorgon or something.

And it's not the first time I've said "This makes/doesn't make too much sense not to be true!" We'll see what's up in about, oh, five hours.

You do realize your theory still has one stinking problem. Cozy can control herself for a few minutes around Starlight. Chrysalis, as we've seen, cannot do that for even a second.

Good point I don't see Crystalis keeping Starlight alive.

I'm honestly surprised that Cozy seems to be the primary villain here it's pretty rare to have a villain who doesn't have a horn.

It depends on how you view that scene. Chrysalis was there for one reason: get pictures of the six Element Bearers. Starlight was irrelevant. I see it more as her being impatient at having to do something she sees as pointless. And considering her plan also involved destroying the Mane Six, she clearly hates them as well, and yet was able to hide that.

And, I mean, I'm not really serious about any of this. These posts, particularly these ones about the finale as it airs, are probably what people would call flash-fics. Just quick little bunches of speculation that I'm writing over a few minutes.

Though I will say I give it about 50/50 odds that Cozy is Chrysalis. Even if that was Chrysalis unable to control herself in The Mean Six, it wouldn't be the first time the writers ignored how a character acted previously.

Chrysalis would keep Starlight alive, though. In fact, that was her plan in The Mean Six, so that Starlight could see all her friends killed first.

And see, that's how you know Cozy is secretly Chrysalis; because that's the only way she'd have a horn! (To be fair, it's a bit of a flaw with the world here. When unicorns can have world-ending magic spells, there's not much an earth pony can do to compete.)

But yeah, I've been having fun with this, but despite all these points I'm definitely on the non-Chrysalis side for Cozy Glow.

Really, what's doing it for me now is the leaked statue from season nine. It was a statue of Cozy Glow and Tirek together, and it had 'Cozy Glow' in the name. That's what convinces me she's not Chrysalis; that statue would have a different name if she was.

I love reading these episode breakdowns and theories of yours. They always make me look at past episodes for any clues or unexplained parts and what they may mean for the future. Personally, I really hoping your Cozy Glow is Chrysalis theory is true cuz that's about the only thing I can think of that would both do Chrysalis modicum of justice and make sense.

Unless they go over the deep end and trap Chrysalis as Cozy Glow and then go on to make it sound like a good thing. I wouldn't put it past them to have Chrysalis staying as Cozy Glow be some kind bastardized redemption of Chrysalis where they pretend that Chrysalis leaves her old life behind and embraces one as Cozy Glow.

Here's a cool idea about the magic: what if Tirek planned all of this?

Uh, I'm pretty sure that's exactly what the episode said.
