Unfamiliarity · 3:38am Aug 27th, 2018

Some of you may have noticed that Familiar just vanished from my story page! It was probably hackers. Or perhaps a magnetic storm.

But it definitively isn't related to my entirely original short story Familiarity which is being submitted for actual publication! To a publisher who insists the content you submit can't be available online.

Certainly not.

I believe that it was those pesky Russian hackers who did it! Them and the aliens! It was always the aliens!

Those crazy russians.

In that case, allow me to offer congratulations for no reason whatsoever; certainly not for being published. Certainly not.

YOU DARE PULL A TWILIGHT ON US?!

That's a rather annoying hypothetical requirement, and would be even moreso if it had been behind one of your stories disappearing, but I hope you have very good luck with the submission of this new and completely unrelated story you mentioned! :D
Where have you submitted it?

For anyone who had it in "read later" and didn't get to it yet, you certainly can't find it over at FiMFetch.net, and it certainly isn't story 386643.

Gosh darn hackers hacking in the middle of magnetic storms

Right here! Thanks for the good wishes. Fingers are crossed they accept it.

You sir, are a ruffian and a scoundrel.

Well, good luck dude. Hooves crossed.

Oddly enough, I think that story is better suited as an original fiction work than a ponyfic.

Congrats! :pinkiehappy:

:yay: Cheers, and good luck!

Fingers crossed! Considering how much I liked the original runs, I have no doubt you'll bowl folks over.

Asimov's is a:

Top market, but they take a couple months to get back to you even if it's a rejection. I always send stuff to Charles Finlay at F&SF first 'cause you'll hear from him within a week whether he wants it or not. Then I go to Asimov's next.

Oh, thank you! :raritystarry:

I was worried about their long response time, so this advice is quite helpful.

I have a story in epub format called Familiar, but it certainly isn't one of my favorites of yours. Not a bit...

Good luck! Hopefully this counts as "unpublished" now. My attempt to submit a story to a pro press failed because it had been posted on the Web at all, regardless of whether or not it was currently available. Hope you have better luck.

I don't know what you're talking about. Familiarity is a totally different story. In fact, I have summarized a list of their extensive differences below.

  • The characters in Familiarity are not horses. The characters in Familiar are all horses.
  • The characters in Familiarity are normal size. The characters in Familiar are little.
  • Please god don't let them find this place by Googling.

Hey, I found this file on the bottom of the blog. I think it still has some serial numbers on it?

In any case, best of luck!

Oh, at last I'll be able to point people who haven't watched MLP to it without a ten-minute talk about how derivative works are not all bad and I don't know what ponies are even doing there, honest. Fingers crossed for A Village in a Ravine too!

Let me just say that Familiar is(was?) a really good story, and I certainly believe Familiarity, a very unrelated story which has no bearing upon anything else I have said before this, will get published! It's definitely of a high quality, although I haven't read Familiarity (or anything similar) at all, nosiree.

Good luck. Off to fimfarchive for me...

Go get 'em! Take the publishing world by storm.

Go get 'em!

The characters in Familiar are little.

They are normal size too (normal for a pony).

4926867

No they're clearly little ponies.

The magazines:

Are looking for any excuse to reject a story. They're going through 20 to 30 unsolicited manuscripts a day. after all, and they can only take three or four stories a month. So if the submission doesn't follow the standard manuscript format, out if goes. It appeared once upon a time on the web? Out it goes. The first paragraph has a misspelled word? Out it goes.

As for wait time, three to four months is about average for Asimov's, I've found. So hang in there! It's a fine story!

Mike

Any update on Familiarity?

Out for publication, no answer yet, but that's to be expected. It might take up to another month.
