    On prying out nails

I'll start by repeating the edit I made at the end of my previous post:

I've already been made aware in comments that the article I linked to is supposedly a fake. I only say "supposedly" because I have no desire to go digging into it and determine if the claim is correct.

    On nails, coffins, and finality

A friend of mine posted this link to Facebook a few days ago. Fair warning, it's got some unpleasant stuff, including an account of what was almost certainly an attempt at sexual exploitation or assault of a young girl.

    "Equoid" by Charles Stross

Having used a pastiche of his fictional "Laundry" agency in Kraken, I feel obligated to point out that Charles Stross recently put up a new story in the series online, titled "Equoid".

    It's about unicorns... sort of.

    Ponies for Pathfinder kickstarter

I only found out about this fairly late in the game, but the makers of a pony race supplement for Pathfinder are running a kickstarter for a new deluxe edition. The original was pretty minimalist, with little to

    I'm not dead!

Holy crap. I just finished chapter 10 of Kraken.

Take a moment to reattach your jaws, if you need to.

My take on Ditzy Doo and Doctor Whooves' relationship · 6:41pm Oct 31st, 2012

From their vantage point atop a high cliff, Ditzy watched the firestorm consume what had been, mere hours ago, a lush and verdant jungle. The constant rain of molten rock had slowed but not yet stopped, while thick, black smoke choked the sky and blotted out the sun. Were it not for the shield that surrounded the TARDIS, she knew that the mere heat of the air would scorch their lungs. Spreading her wings, she felt the winds that penetrated the shield, faint echoes of the savage gales that tore across the land in the wake of the impact.

Glancing at the chestnut stallion by her side, she saw him staring at the distant crater, still glowing red, his eyes and his smile wide and filled with wonder. He was always such a mystery to her, but there were moments such as this, rare and precious, where she felt she could understand him just the tiniest bit more. While she had been feeling the echoes of the impact reverberate through the air, he was feeling them reverberate through time.

Smiling, she leaned towards him and said quietly, "Iridium."

He blinked for a moment before tearing his eyes away from the scene and looking at her. "What's that?"

"The sedimentary layer that coincides with one of the biggest mass extinction events is rich in iridium."

"Is that so."

"You were awfully excited when you realized the ship's hull was an iridium alloy."

"I did get a bit giddy, didn't I?"

Ditzy knew she'd never get a straight answer out of him, but she didn't need one. The Cyberponies had not just failed to prevent the evolution of the pony race, they had enabled it: The impact of their mothership had cleared the ecological board, leaving room for the few surviving protomammals to eventually dominate the world. He'd done it for the pony race, for Equestria, for the entire world and even the galaxy they would one day explore. He'd done it because the Cyberponies needed to be stopped, and because it was the right thing to do. But looking into his eyes, so young and yet so very old, she knew there was more.

He'd done it for her.

He'd done it without a care for his own life, because as far as he was concerned, a universe in which Ditzy Doo did not exist was not a universe worth living in.

Her breath caught in her throat, and her heart hammered against her ribs. Her cheeks burned, and her knees felt weak. For a moment, she was strangely relieved that her wings had already been spread to feel the wind.

The stallion's smile faded, and his brow furrowed. "Are you quite alright, Ditzy?"

She leaned closer to him, struggling to control her breath. "I'm not sure. I feel funny." She draped a wing over his back, gently brushing him with the tips of her primaries, as her mouth drifted closer to his. "I think... I might need a Doctor."

"Hey Ditzy, I--"

Carrot Top's voice shocked Ditzy Doo out of her reverie. Abruptly spitting the pencil out of her mouth, she missed the cup entirely and sent it flying against the wall. She spun to face the intruder, wings spread wide to conceal the assorted materials spread out over her desk. "What, what do you want, what is it?"

Carrot Top stared at her for a long moment, one eyebrow cocked and her jaw slightly slack. "I was just gonna ask if you wanted to get take-out tonight. What are y--"

"I wasn't doing anything! I mean, take-out's fine. That new place on Stirrup is really good, I had lunch there last week."

"Oh... Kay." Carrot Top slowly backed out of the room. "In the future, you might want to remember to close the door when you're not doing anything you might not want other ponies to not see."

"I think that was one too many--"

"Don't care."

"Right. Ask for extra egg rolls."

"Will do." Stepping into the hall, Carrot Top closed the door behind her.

Breathing a sigh of relief, Ditzy turned back to her desk. Her violently-ejected pencil had fallen behind it, but looking at the page she'd been on, it felt like a decent break point anyway. Carefully stashing the newest pages of her work in the drawer with the rest, she closed the paleontology book she'd checked out for reference and took another look at the magazine beside it. The deadline for the fanfiction contest was only a week away, but the prospect of getting published in the magazine of the official Doctor Whooves fan club was too tempting to pass up. Besides, she was almost done, and Cheerilee had agreed to both proofread and remain silent on pain of tickling for the low low price of a dozen banana nut muffins. That and an afternoon spent typing and she'd be ready.

I just need to come up with a decent pseudonym for the companion. Mary Sues were frowned upon, and even though she tried to keep her fictional self realistically flawed, she knew that submitting a story with the same name for the author and companion character was not a fast track to the finals.

Looking out the window, she saw that the sun had set while she'd been writing. Probably time for me to come up for air anyway. After stretching for a moment, she emerged from her room and fluttered towards the front door. "Hold up, Carr, I'll walk with you."

Hm... Raindrops? She stifled a chuckle so her roommate wouldn't ask what was so funny. Nah. She'd... Well, no, she wouldn't actually beat the tar out of me. But it would be hilarious watching her struggle not to.

:trollestia:

So yeah. This is something I'll be working into my next Ditzy Doo fanfic, which I mentioned in my previous post. I don't use the Doctor or his relationship with Ditzy in my continuity, but I couldn't help but nod to it. (And if you haven't already, go read Paleo Prints' The Three Whooves.)

Two things I wanted to get opinions on from readers: An RPGnet poster suggested that Necroneighmicon (the book of the neighs of the dead) was a better name than Neighcronomicon, and I'm tempted to agree. Also, since the name of the laundry shop that conceals the archive in the Laundry Files books is called Capital Laundry Services (something I didn't know when writing the chapter where my version appears), I've considered changing the name of the shop in Kraken to Canterlot Laundry Services. What do you think?

Despite my efforts, I've made hardly any progress on Tested or Kraken lately; insomnia and anxiety have been major impediments in that regard. :pinkiecrazy: But I think I'm starting to normalize sleep-wise, and I'm trying to see what I can do about getting help for both (which I really should anyway, disappointed fans or no). I've also been playing Minecraft again, as well as installing some mods, and I think having a specific thing to be mad at is helping. :twilightsheepish:

Anyhoo. If you missed it, I put a little preview of Tested and a pony-creator image if Delta Green in the comments for the last post, so if you're curious, check those out.

Okay, I laughed. A lot. :rainbowlaugh::rainbowlaugh::rainbowlaugh::rainbowlaugh::rainbowlaugh:

You had me scared there for a second. I thought you were moving away from the whole Ditzy x Macintosh relationship.

On that note: Yay! Clavdivs Caesar is writing another story about Ditzy Doo!

And if you haven't already, go read Paleo Prints' The Three Whooves

And here I was going to point out that this amazing scientist/engineer version of Ditzy seems awfully familiar. :derpyderp2:

That was brilliant, I want to see more.

Wonderful.
