Top 5 Sonic/MLP Crossovers · 2:07am Aug 17th, 2018
So let me start with something that's pretty much common knowledge. Sonic crossovers in general are… much maligned in a good portion of this fandom, to say the least. Probably due in no small part to the fact that most of them are not very good at all. One of the main reasons I finally decided to do my own. I’ve personally waded through a lot of crappy ones over the years, each one annoying me more than the last. Either I really adore the different themes they have mixing, or I'm just a glutton for punishment.
But, there are a select few that among fanfic readers, were and are considered good quality. So today, I’m gonna give the ones that entertained me the most, and helped inspire me on my own creative process some recognition. These are my picks for the top five Sonic/MLP crossovers.
Honorable mention: The Speed of Sound, by sid5594.
A long discontinued fic I stumbled across back in the day, while a little casual and following the more by the numbers "meet and greet" method that you see in a lot of crossover stories, I generally found myself entertained by it. Most of it just had friendly introductions, our blue hedgehog having the obligatory Sonic vs RD race trope early on, and plot development up until Sonic's bald nemesis showed up and had a brief standoff. But the author stopped uploading not long after that point. Nothing groundbreaking in my opinion, but pretty well written and good for what it was.
5. Chaos in Equestria, by Snicket
The first entry by my old acquaintance Snicket was a lot more on the drama end of the spectrum. I liked the inclusion of the Fleetway version of Super Sonic, that's not something I've seen very often in these stories. A very entertaining read. If I would have any complaints, it's only that it was a bit too harem-ish for my tastes. Other than that, good stuff. I believe he's on a hiatus right now. Best wishes, guy. 👍
4. A New Friend, by RocknRumble.
Another now defunct story, this was one I always looked forward to back when RnR was still around. After some early conversation with one of the main cast wondering about their place in the world, the main cast is introduced to the Blue Blur fresh out of a cross-dimensional crash landing outside of Ponyville. One brief hospital visit later and they all start getting to know each other. It picked up in action on Sonic's part soon, right after Trixie accidentally put Ponyville in the sights of a town-threatening crisis. Throw in an introduction to the royals, the first main confrontation with Eggman won by an assist from the Mane 6, and the newest campaign against old Egghead was off to the races. It developed just enough to get into another battle with some new minions, minor angst between Sonic and some younger Ponyville residents, and resolve some petty personal issues between the two speedy blue things. It was by far one of my favorite reads. Hope one of these days ol' Rock will show himself again.
3. Sonic Origins Vol 1: Rainbow Dash's Story, by LightWinzz
The only reason this isn’t higher is because it’s still early in development. But I’m liking the way it’s going. It’s not the most original when it comes to crossover plots, basically a slight rehash of the time traveling conundrum from Sonic Generations, but featuring Silver and Blaze, and with RD as the mainstay. At first I thought that I've seen that done a few too many times, especially here on Fimfiction, for it to really interest me anymore, but his execution has made me change my mind. It's been tense and action packed battling during the time travel portions, with a nice share of personal slice of life for Dash as the lead. And I have to admit, it's always fun to see RD getting her ego deflated by someone so similar to her. I look forward to seeing more and where it goes.
2. When Chaos Stirs, A Tale of Two Worlds, by Dawen123
This was a massive adventure fic. It followed similar tropes of dumping characters into Equestria and all the misplaced accusations that came with it at first, but featured almost the entire Sonic cast. Some parts I found a little less captivating than others, especially some of the later city adventures, but all in all I remember always being excited for updates. It starts decently enough and stays pretty consistent, and the last third has some serious violence and moments of despair and hopelessness with an important death. Does everything work out in the end? Well, that's for you to find out. Just a warning, it's pretty heavy on the shipping between a lot of the different cast's characters. I can already hear the haters.
1. A New Dawn, The Simple Life, & Dark Days, by Gunflame345
Yeah, I know. I'm cheating with this last one. But I say you can't have what by all accounts is the current best Sonic/MLP crossover series out there right now without the sum of its parts. Made by my old military buddy Gunflame, A New Dawn opens with Rainbow Dash's dreams of ever being a Wonderbolt being apparently crushed because she pisses off the wrong person. Yeah, great start huh? On the hedgehog end of things, it follows the Archie comic continuity, directly after issue 175. This is just after the destruction of Knothole, for those who followed the comics. But instead of everything working out and everyone being saved like in that canon, Eggman succeeds in the plan he revealed at the end of that issue. All of the important Sonic characters, along with the rest of a burning Mobius save for Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Shadow and Amy are killed. As the others escape, Sonic goes to spit in the devil's eye one more time, and somehow ends up in Equestria. What follows is war in foreign kingdoms and near constant threats of mass casualties. All with the most angst filled relationship drama you will ever see, and I mean for everyone involved. No one is safe from it. Gunflame's motto of storytelling he would always tell me is "all killer, no filler." Believe you me he more than lives up to that promise. My only regret is that he's been on a tour of duty for what must be coming up to two years now. So the third act is woefully unfinished. This is one story series I'd love to finally see brought to a satisfying close, and more than earns its spot as the number one Sonic/MLP crossover on the net.
...Until I surpass it, that is. That's right, I'm coming for your spot GF.
If you do give any of these stories a look, I hope you enjoy. They're a far cry better than 90 percent of what the ones on Fimfiction have to offer. And for those following Break the Walls Down, the new chapter will be out shortly. I just need to find a proofreader.
This is SSD, signing off.
Wait, the third part of Gunflames story has been started?
4921174
Yeah. But it's only had two chapters for a couple years. Like I said, military duty's been keeping him held up.
4921335
Ah. I guess I just forgot after awhile. Like you said, its been awhile.
Oh well. What would you say are some of the standard things that appear in most Sonic/mlp crossovers outside Sonic and Rainbow Dash just NEEDING to race?

In my opinion, story lines that are too predictable. Most of them, even the well written ones, almost always start out the same way.
>Sonic/the cast falls into Equestria.
>They meet and say hi.
>Friendly introduction to ponies.
>Maybe a minor problem shows up that needs beating down.
After I've seen the same opening plot happen so many times, they just start to get less special. There's so much more you could do before that happens. Hence why I decided to take a different route.

Duely noted. *writes down this stuff to avoid it in my future Sonic fics* though this also seems to be the case with alot of crossover fics sadly...
Nice to meet someone else how apreciates Gunflames works i hope he's okay and done with that so he can enjoy a peaceful life and once he's ready finish the series seriously IT'S SO AWESOME!!!
