People of Bronycon 2018: It's About Friendship, Stupid! · 1:02am Aug 8th, 2018

Bronycon, perhaps obviously, is about friendship. About meeting new people, reconnecting with old ones. The first year I went I made a post like this, but last year I ran out of energy before I really could put it together and then it just took too long. I did not want to make that mistake this year; you guys, all of you that I met and chatted with, are what make Bronycon what it is, and I want to make sure to acknowledge this. So, here’s to all of you wonderful bastards for being there, and making this another great Bronycon! Now, in no particular order, a few personal shoutouts:

Dreams of Ponies

My man, I wanna thank you for room sharing with me, for your understanding and generosity, and for tolerating my endless rants about TTRPG game design. I was also surprised at the breadth of some of your talents. You definitely have some capability as a voice actor. Also: I did end up reading Dictionary Problem on the train ride home, and I will have to relay my thoughts at some time soon. Thanks for helping me get to and survive the con this year, it was appreciated.

I Wish I Was Toast

My man, I wish you the best of luck in your efforts at self improvement, and I hope you enjoyed the con half as much as I did. We didn’t hang that much, but you were a pretty solid roommate. Good luck, and take care.

PeerImagination

You sir, are just the King of Unflappability. You were a pretty cool roommate to have and I generally enjoyed hanging out with you. Shame we didn’t watch Friendship Games as planned (at least, I think not. We kind of lost track of each other past a certain point), but you do need to watch that.

Also, as mentioned, the bourbon has a good home.

Wanderer D

I always feel like we never get enough hangtime at these cons, but these days I pester you on Discord enough that I feel like that matters less. As always you are a 100% cool dude to hang with, and I respect the amount of work you put into just managing things for everyone at the con, especially the author’s dinner. You’re not doing it right unless you panickedly quadruple check in case of total disaster. Good on you, man. That said, you did not do enough singing my praises as a GM, even after I let you guys have that scram jet.

Nadnerb

Another year, another vendor hall session of me perched at your table like some kind of bearded vulture. Always nice to hang with your dry, sarcastic ass, and I enjoyed watch you work on your art. You really have developed quite the talent, and I find it interesting just studying you as you work. Also, I sincerely hope you enjoy that picture you randomly decided to snap of me in glasses.

Jykinturah

I admit, it was a little weird hanging out again, although I can only imagine it was ever so slightly reciprocal, especially now that I have more perspective on that whole mess. That said, I had fun. You’re a pretty fun guy. I don’t have much more to say except hopefully we’ll exchange more than two words between now and next Bronycon. Also, good luck vending next year. Then you too can join the club of me liking your art but never buying anything!

*Fingerguns*

Sirius Shenanigans

Holy shit you’re alive! I was completely surprised to see you, and also deeply appreciative that someone else knows the special kind of hell of living in an area where 110% humidity is a dry day. I am sorry for your suffering, and glad you’re back! That said, you basically vanished after day one and I never saw you again, which is a shame, I was trying to get people beaten up this year and I am sure you’d have been down for that.

GaPJaxie

I had a lot of fun hanging out with you again. I appreciate anyone who spends time gathering Fun Facts about history, which, remind me sometime to tell you about the time Jewish Nazis tried to kill a sitting US President. I also really enjoyed the panels you were on and felt they generally gave pretty good advice, which is something I always give mad props for, so, good on you, mate. I’ll be seeing you around!

FanOfMostEverything

I always appreciate anyone who can listen to Magic the Gathering salt, and anyone willing to listen to the glory that is Naruto, the Best Vampire Ever, and you were a twofer! In all seriousness, I enjoyed hanging out with you, and look forward to doing so again next year. Also, I can’t remember if you were the one planning a Mad Twientist cosplay next year, but if my memory on that isn’t totally shot, you should go for it. You have the mustache for it, good sir.

Bad Horse

I enjoyed hanging with you Bad Horse, even if you are wrong about Plato. Cheekiness aside, I had fun chatting with you about a variety of topics. It’s not often I get to flex my Liberal Arts Education muscles these days; there are only so many times I can brag about finding formal logical fallacies in Rousseau to people who’ve already heard it. All in all it was a nice experience, and, as is a trend, I look forward to more in a year.

Equestrian Sen

Much as the above, I enjoyed chatting about a wide range of topics with someone who’s looked into that stuff as well. That said, in retrospect, I do worry BH and I ended up dominating those conversations a fair bit. Still, it was a nice chat all around, and if you ever want to do more of the above, I am… around.

Aragon

Unlike everyone else I am going to avoid dragging you for being shorter than average and unable to handle a single muffin. Joke’s gotten a bit old, anyway. It was interesting to meet you in person and I am always flattered when a Big Fish remembers who I am. I also appreciate being given the time to chat about stuff, especially my impressions of other people’s work. That said, I feel like a minor side effect of meeting you in person is that it’s harder to read your blogs since I naturally want to read them in your voice and you have both a very distinctive vocal profile for an english speaker and may actually speak at a higher WPM than I read which is… terrifying.

Petricord

Meeting you was definitely a surprise since I don’t think I’d really interacted with you much on or off site. I’d seen your name, but had no real impression of the person attached. I am glad you seemed to enjoy listening to me ramble; a good quality to have if you end up in my presence. Honestly though, you’re an earnest listener and a sincere, humble person, and I’m glad to have made a good impression with the opportunity given.

GaryOak

You sir, run a good panel. Every single one was informative, and you made sure each time to frame you advice in context that form has to follow function, which is, as you might know, a bit of a hobby horse of mine. I had a lot of fun hanging out with you around and after the con, manticores and all, and have respect for you as a teacher for writing. I also just gotta give mad props for a man who went for the full ten badges. That is dedication to a meme I have to respect.

Penstroke

Last couple years we haven’t really hung out, and when we did hang out, it wasn’t entirely the best. That said, this year, I had a lot of fun hanging out with you, unstable unicorns and all! You were jovial, upbeat, and friendly and just generally fun to be around. Also, I don’t know if I ever mentioned to this the one time I fangirled at you, but your story caused 22 year old me to randomly Skype message people at 3 in the morning after an unplanned but compulsive binge read to randomly ask them what are these emotion things I was suddenly feeling were and if they were normal.

10/10, would get existential crisis from feels again.

MajinSyeekoh

I admit to feeling like a bit of a tricky dick when it comes to hanging out with you. I’d heard about you, but never read much of your work because raunchy shitposting isn’t normally my thing. That said, you had a bit of a rep for being a bro, so when I heard you mention vaping I took a chance and used the promise of vaper solidarity to lure you out into a tactical friendship ambush. Glad I did, too. You were a mellow, grounded fellow who is easy to get along with and pretty open about your baggage, which made you easy to get along with, and I had fun out on the balcony, puffing away with you. I’m looking forward to doing it more next year!

Horse Voice

I have to respect a man who can sew, get giddy about getting autographs from his favorite fandom artists, wears a denim jacket covered in metal band logos, gives a damn good panel, and can sincerely lament the loss of appreciation our society has for Kipling. Also, I finally remembered what Kipling poem I had liked - “If.” You are a gentleman, and a scholar, and I say those things sincerely. I look forward to getting to know you more because you are just a cool dude, all around.

ShadowofCygnus

I didn’t speak much with you, but what little I did left a good impression. You seemed, based on the context I ran into you in, a sincere and compassionate individual, and I respect that. I also meant what I said. Both things. Consider my question to be an open one next time we’re both in town :raritywink:.

Lazyreader19

We didn’t talk much, but I always like an excuse to talk about my stories, and I appreciate it when people are earnestly interested in listening. I hope you enjoyed my ranting about my propensity to soak stories about cute horses in love being happy in sad with complex, personal spiritual meaning. Unless I got you confused for someone else. Which case this shoutout is gonna come off as super weird.

OldenBronie

I have always taken note of your constant support of what I write, and appreciated it. Now though, that I have met you in person, I can only feel deeply humbled. I now know, at least in part, the background from which those words came, and thus treasure them all the more. Godspeed to you, sir, and may the light of friendship always illuminate your path.

Thank you.

You cannot buy my praises with a jet! Now, a void blade....

I enjoyed hanging with you Bad Horse, even if you are wrong about Plato.

Yes, well, that is what a Platonist would say. :rainbowwild:

I like to think I'm a good listener, and Naruto was indeed the best vampire ever.

Also, yes, I am planning a Rule 63 Mad Twientist cosplay. And I do plan on incorporating the mustache. :moustache:

Great seeing you!

... yes, by nature of you thinking Plato sucks someone who admires him would disagree with your statement.

I'm... I'm not sure what the point of your rebuttal was. :twilightoops:

4916383 The content of my rebuttal lies not so much in its words as in the expression on Rainbow Dash's face.

(e.g., you're taking it too seriously)

I was trying to convey a more humorous befuddlement as opposed to a serious deconstruction, but alas, internet, tonality, these things are not always copacetic.

Glad to see my old Vampire character still gets chuckles.

Aw shucks, have I mentioned I'm still trying to get better at taking compliments? All I can say is, thank you very much. Talking to you is quite educational, often in unexpected ways, so I'll look forward to the next time.

By the way, if you think GaryOak and I can do a good panel, just wait till you see us do one when it's not the middle of the bloody night.

I'm really happy that you found my panels useful. And if I have the name GaryOak on this site, I figured I should at least somewhat look the part at cons. It helps that I was really good at the TCG back when I was 10-14 years old, which is how I won all those badges.

I really enjoyed meeting you! I also enjoyed the song here as it really says so much about how I feel about the fandom and all of you.
Since 2014, you have all, each and every one been my friends and family. This fandom is my home and will be no matter where we meet. Because where we are, we are home!

I do worry BH and I ended up dominating those conversations a fair bit.

Nah, I had a good time with that. I'll never forget your pact with Axis.

And someday we'll turn BH around towards mathematical paganism. Or Platonism. Honestly, I'm fine with either.

Tell us about the time Jewish Nazis tried to kill a sitting US President.
