The Quickening: Fandom · 2:24pm Jul 13th, 2018

Ah, the decade of the 2010s, the seventies but with cutting-edge technology, a stupid president in the most powerful country in the world, a social climate similar to 1968, a war in the Middle East that caused a crisis at the international level and the water is being privatized, damn we're already in a dystopia that we feared so much but meh, it's temporary, and our "80's" will arrive eventually.

Although many of us may not have grandchildren, perhaps others will and they'll have to explain to them how bizarre the 2010 decade was, especially the concept of "fandom".

A fandom is basically the fan group of a specific topic. Nowadays it's almost impossible to talk about political issues on the internet because the people of this cyber world usually have a black and white mentality, if you aren't of mine then you're one of the others and this happens a lot on things like Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook... More like in any social network.

Surely you've meet people who are putting things on Twitter such as "threads" on mundane things because the cheese is being "appropriate" for minorities, people accidentally sharing false news, kids who are hyper-aggressive to the time to talk resulting sometimes don't know what they say and is not that they're the most concise people in the world when it comes to presenting their ideas, but they know anything about what they're trying to say and often ruin everything as in the cases of feminism, friendships, fandoms and politics, in addition to being the internet of pedantic anti-feminists who make long posts that are typical "I am not feminist because I am not like the other girls and I don't do drama lmao" and blablabla... Followed by users from across the political spectrum filling pages and forums with false information and a bitch attitude.

The internet is a free space where anyone can put any nonsense, but often forget that freedom of expression doesn't save you from being an asshole, I mean, the internet doesn't have a shred of criteria.

THIS IS NOT NEW, and it has been a good time in which it's discussed if the fans were toxic before, but at least in those times those weren't so aggressive, although there was the odd incident where actors of series/movies were harassed as the case of Jake Lloyd. But, with the arrival of the internet to the whole world, anyone could talk about what they wanted, whether it's talking about how beautiful my waifu is, followed by sharing porn and then talking about how the political party is re-cuddling... then come back to share porn and talk about how beautiful my waifu is.

The fact that a fandom is "carcinogenic" is not for political reasons as many believe, they are rather sociopathic people who think they own a popular product. The reason why Steven Universe is infamous is not because it's full of "Social bullshit", because if it really was like that then the series wouldn't exist in the first place, for Rick and Morty is the same, or the arrogants who are in their twenties that don't respect the children who see said children's series to transform and instill the thought that they have the right to shape the fandom to their liking and whim, in addition to believing themselves as the owners of said series in question.

Nowadays it's common to see people making fun of the fans who want a remake of the newest star wars films not because they're bad films, but because it's propaganda and "a lack of respect" to the originals.

Complaining about a world of fiction just because it's not now that you remember it's a sign that you are a human being who shouldn't approach anyone for a very long time and I suggest getting out to run if you have the following symptoms:

1) Female protagonists with background pissed you off and you labeled them as "mary sues".

2) You think the end had to be like your fan fiction.

3) Your OTP is the only valid one or you promote a "creepy" ship or another ship in an unhealthy way.

4) You give likes to those videos that flood youtube with all capital letters of "feminists being shattered HD".

5) You believe that those who don't know anything about a series should be humiliated once they get in.

6) You spend it making laaaaaaaaaaaaarge comments on how your theory is real or correct someone who believed something that may or may not be false.

7) Rebloge and follow people who make grotesque rule 34.

8) You complain about the "calarts style"

9) You have a pedantic attitude and you aren't a pleasant person.

10) You glorify the arrogant attitude of niche people on the internet.

In conclusion many of us have our thoughts and it will be up to us to take the next step. We'll be people who try to improve their patience and begin to admit that our likes define us to a certain degree, therefore a good first step would be that it's time to start setting aside ourlikes and not be a part of our lives but as "memoirs in construction" where we'll look back and remember how cool it was to play our favorite games, idolize our fictional figures and other beautiful things, but this implies that we mature and start taking responsibility for what we consume otherwise the concept of fandom will die.

You have to respect the artists, programmers, directors, actors and actresses, storyboarders, producers and other responsible people who are behind our favorite shows, our games that we love and the movies that fascinate us so much without being able to echo that there are certain failures in those products or in their own creators, who are also in some way responsible for this chaos, but we can do it either by ignoring and allowing the poisonous sectors of a group and give them the "coup de grace" at the moment adequate and not to overshadow the context of a product just because some fools think they own the product.

From error is learned a lot if we use it to improve. The nerd from the 80's must die and don't let a fandom become part of your life.
