The EU copyright bill that could do some truly horrible things to the Internet as we know it has been sent back to the drawing board. Of course, as the title of this blog indicates, this just means it'll be coming back later, but at least we've all hopefully learned something. Come September, we'll see if the new version is any more palatable or less potentially disastrous.
Yea!! (Seriously, any time a bureaucrat says "We have to get this passed *now* to fix this terrible problem you've never heard of before" I tend to get a little skeptical and start to wonder just who it really helps.)

The lobbyists. It's always the lobbyists.

For now D:
4895511 Whose exactly?
Ours?
Or the lobbyists and folks that WANT this nonsense?
4895511 Normally around here, it's "for the children."
And there was much rejoicing.
As long as they don’t just do the same thing again, like what happened with the US and net neutrality. It went something like:
“Hey, you’re cool if we remove your internet freedom, right? No? Ok.”
6 months later: “Hey, you’re cool if we remove your internet freedom, right? Still no? Ok.”
6 months later: “Hey, are you absolutely sure? Still yes? Hrmmm.”
6 months later: “Ok, we’re getting rid of net neutrality because our sites were mysteriously down when we asked if anyone cared about net neutrality.”

Audible Magic. The lobbyists you're referring to are Audible Magic. They've been at it since at least 2010.

That seems to be the modus operandi for the EU, unfortunately. But if they do, there'll be Hell to pay. And they know it. PC culture is taking blows already, it's collapsing on itself. Case in point: Spanish rapper flees to Belgium because his lyrics were too offensive. Extradition not certain yet.
Dodged a bullet!
Well... for the time being, anyway
