    New Hinterlands sequel

I've been working on another sequel to Hinterlands for over a year, and it's finally ready to be published! Check out the continuing adventures of our hapless necromancer and her bounty hunter friend in the great white north:

    TDeath Valley
Hostile lands. Frigid valleys. Backwater villages. Shadowy forests. Vicious beasts. Gloomy mines. Strange magics. And the nicest pony for miles is a necromancer. A royal investigation of tainted ley lines uncovers dark secrets in the Frozen North.

    Hinterlands / Urban Wilds fanart

Recently, Moonatik decided that Hinterlands and Urban Wilds were somehow good enough to merit fanart and drew a picture of Bitterroot and Amanita. I think it's neat!

In Which I Beg for Sweet Release From Breaking Dawn: Chapter 11 -- The Two Things at the Very Top of my Things-I-Never-Want-to-Do List · 10:46am Jul 2nd, 2018

These four books are at the very top of my Things-I-Never-Want-to-Read-Again List.

Even as Jacob and Seth try to fight Sam’s Alpha order, the pack begins to move out. Jacob reflects on the Cullens and admits that, while he’s fine with killing (most of) them, an attack now is a bad idea and a lot of the werewolves are probably going to get killed, not to mention what it’ll do to Bella. But Sam’s the Alpha, and no one can dispute him. And then Jacob remembers: he’s the descendant of the previous Alpha. He was born to lead the pack, not Sam. So Jacob simply accepts his role as Alpha and Sam’s order is gone.

Well. Isn’t that convenient.

Jacob hasn’t replaced Sam; he’s just left the pack, and is Alpha to exactly zero wolves, but it’s enough. Jacob uses his newfound freedom to argue with Sam one last time.

«They aren’t-» I shook my head, clearing it «they aren’t our enemies. They never have been. Until I really thought about destroying them, thought it through, I didn’t see that.»

«This isn’t about them,» he snarled at me. «This is about Bella. She has never been the one for you, she has never chosen you, but you continue to destroy your life for her!»

Yay Sam! *confetti* Oh geez these people are so terrible that I’m cheering for the guy who brainwashes people.

Sam says Jacob will have to challenge him for the right of pack Alpha, but Jacob says he’ll simply go his own way and stand between his old pack and the Cullens. He asserts that he’ll never take anyone’s will away from them and races into the forest to reach the Cullens before the other wolves do.

As he’s running, he hears Seth running behind him — not chasing him, but following him. Seth wants to join him in protecting the Cullens. Jacob tries to tell him to go home, but Seth impishly asks if that was an order, and Jacob recoils. In the process, he realizes that his head is very quiet; even though the other wolves haven’t changed back, he can only hear his and Seth’s thoughts. Separate packs aren’t mindlinked. Seth continues to be awesome, turning snarky without having to resort to being snide.

«Wow. It’s really quiet. Sort of eerie. But also kinda nice, don’t you think? I bet it was easier, like this, for Ephraim and Quil and Levi. Not such a babble with just three. Or two.»

«Shut up, Seth.»

«Yes, sir.»

«Stop that!»

Jacob accepts that Seth’s following him, and Seth offers to run a patrol around the Cullen house, falling back if he sees any wolves coming. Jacob and Seth are both nervous about this, since they don’t want to attack their former pack brothers and sister. But Seth points out how it’s a double-edged sword:

«But they won’t be any happier with the idea of attacking us than we are with attacking them. That might be enough to stop them right there. Plus, there’re only eight of them now.»

«Stop being so…» Took me a minute to decide on the right word. «Optimistic. It’s getting on my nerves.»

«No problem. You want me to be all doom and gloom, or just shut up?»

OH HOLY AMAZINGNESS SETH where were your sanity and common sense and sense of humor all this time?!

They reach the Cullens’ and Jacob lays out the situation for Edward. With Carlisle and Esme on their way (from where? Weren’t they supposed to be staying with Bella?), Jacob and Seth run a perimeter around the house, just in case. They meet Carlisle and Esme and let them pass.

At the end of his run, Jacob chances a look inside the house. The living room’s been set up like a hospital room: the furniture’s been moved out of the way, Bella’s on a hospital bed (complete with heart monitor), and she has several IVs stuck in her. She’s getting worse. Like I care.

And, no, we never did learn what those things at the top of Jacob’s list were.

So you'll be diving into 50 Shades of Gray next. :V

Man, once again the werewolf mechanics are cool, but goddamn, becoming alpha should involve, like, actual conflict. Even if he challenged Sam and lost, and ended up the alpha of a pack of zero that way, it would make more sense.

Yeah, that could've led to some kind of epic psychic wolf battle. Instead we just get Jacob connecting his mental wi-fi to a different network.

(Also, I'm adding Psychic Wolf Battle to my list of good album names.)

Also, hooray, Seth! I can only hope there isn't enough book left to ruin him.
