An idealistic thing I had (If it works and if I can pull it off depending on the plot)
DARKNESS CANNOT BE DESTROYED... IT CAN ONLY BE SHIFTED
On a Scientific term, think of it like a boat floating on water. One reason the bloat floats is because when you drop the boat onto the water, the water is being shoved out of the way, and the water pushes back trying to get back to where it was, which is how the boat stays afloat.
When you turn on a light, you're not dispelling the darkness, but rather illuminating it and shoving it out of the way. The darkness is still there and all around you, it's just moved over away from the light, is all. The further away you go from the source of the light, it gets darker.
It does make sense.
Now, in the terms of my fic... Darkness is also a way of FATE, LUCK, LIFE itself... certain events that happen to you.
Fate works in mysterious ways (You cannot deny that) Sometimes we can't always control it. Sometimes things were MADE to happen to us... and will get eventually. No matter how hard to you try to prevent it, it can still happen.
-Even the most well thought out plan can go awry
-Even the most careful person in the world could tip and fall
Just because something HASN'T happened to you YET... doesn't mean it may not happen at all. If I CAN happen... there's always the chance it WILL happen to you.
Darkness is like cruel twists of fate, that bring terrible things to you in your life. One day you're on top of the world, the next day you're at a loss and in misery... things like that.
Well, think of the Darkness as bolts of Lightning ready to strike without notice or warning to unsuspecting victims.
Let's use Cadance and Beast Boy as exampled (Because BB is my favorite subject to use, and I hate Cadance and want to thrash her)
The dark lightning is preparing to strike at Cadance, and make something awful happen to her, whatever that may be, but because Cadance is so beautiful, positive, optimistic, ect, ect... she has ways of AVERTING the strike. Like a cautious person suspecting something bad may happen so they plan to be ready for it... to outsmart it.
When Cadance successfully avoids the strike, she has been spared from the darkness (the bad luck, or whatever it is) but that Dark Lightning is not defeated, it's just been averted. That bolt will now seek someone else and try to strike them instead. It must feed, and nothing can stop it from eventually succeeding
Think of it as... What doesn't happen to you has happened to someone else.
Beast Boy, and the other Dark Angels... as mortal beings they are Rare, one in a million people, born as like LIGHTNING RODS. When the Darkness misses Cadance, it usually goes after them instead, and because of this curse, these guys have no hope to avoid it.
In Beast Boy's case...
-He got sick and was mutated
-Hit folks and every other family he had died
-He was abused
-Mento was a jerk to him
-The Titans weren't ALWAYS loving and loyal to him (And are now worsening)
-And there was Terra, and everything that happened right up to THINGS CHANGE
Beast Boy cannot hope to avoid this darkness that continues to strike him when it can't get at Cadance (The happier Cadance is... the worse BB is gonna get)
Someone has to lick up the crap...
Someone has to take the hit...
...That's Beast Boy. He can try all he wants to avoid getting hit, but in the end, no matter what he ways, where he goes, or what he tries... it's always the same: No Happy endings for him. If he tried to move n, it'll just be the same thing, over, and over and over again...
-He meets a girl... she'll either dump him or die on him
-He tries make new friends... they won't be REAL friends.
"Beast Boy, you are what you are... and that's all you're going to be. All you are the is the guy who makes everyone else feel good, and you must reconcile yourself to the fact that happiness will never be yours."

And now a look at this from MY VIEW (as the writer)
I'm not here to improve BB's life, I'm here to shame him and bash him for letting go of Terra, and I'm here to bash the other Titans and Terra for being so hard on the little guy.
The absolute worst thing you can do is leave someone alone. Why? Because that gives the person who got dumped that no one cares about him/her.
Yeah, I'm I am... SICK and BLOODY TIRED of it always being that way. There's no law that says you HAVE to get over it and move on!

I don't want them finding strength and moving on. It's either BB gets Terra or it's nothing. Those are the requisites to make the fic go the way I want to to (A story about a guy who gets pushed around so much and CAN NEVER IMPROVE HIS LIFE NO MATTER WHAT... that he wants revenge or just turns cold shoulder)
You see, I prefer the ideal of what Bleeding Gums Murphy taught Lisa Simpson...

Now that's what I deem COOL, and that's how I prefer to do things.
I'll Beast Boy wrap up this one with my latest vid (With a song that was only made in 2017) and it matches my inspiration and style perfectly.
I won't argue if that's how you wish to write your stories. However, I will argue that you used a false analogy at the beginning.
First, you compared darkness and light to water and a boat. What makes that a false analogy is that unlike the boat in the water, a light does NOT displace darkness. Darkness has no substance, therefore there's nothing to displace. In your water/boat analogy, both have some form of substance. However, unlike darkness, light actually does have substance in the form of photons. Darkness is simply the lack of light, not the negation of light.
That leads me to my second point. You're trying to compare literal darkness/light with metaphorical darkness/light. Used metaphorically, it becomes something different. Think of it like this. In the literal, think of it as light equals 1 and darkness equals 0. Used metaphorically, light equals 1 and darkness equals -1. Metaphorically, darkness IS the negation of light (light equals good and darkness equals bad).
Third, let's talk about fate. For the sake of argument, we'll assume fate actually does exist. Saying "fate works in mysterious ways" is assuming there's a "how" in the question. Fate just "is". There's nothing that mysterious about it. Fate is simply defined as predetermined events. Therefor Cadance avoiding bad things isn't her avoiding fate, that simply IS fate. And fate doesn't have a positive or negative that oppose each other. Because whether it's good or bad, fate is fate. Again, I won't argue how you want to use/define fate in your fanfics though. After all, your universe, your rules.
Take this how you will (or don't take it at all for all I care). I just wanted to throw in my 2 cents.
