My Thoughts on Molt Down (s8e11) · 4:36pm May 26th, 2018
A Spike episode that didn't make me rip my hair out... What a backward world we live in. A world where up is down and boy bands play instruments.
Check below the break for my somewhat biased thoughts. There will be a few spoilers.
If I weren't so stuck up in my macho-ness, I'd totally be crying right now with how happy I am about this espisode! Not only do we get character progression for our purple dragon, but he finally gets physical development!
HOLY DUCK BALLS!
Long story short, this episode is about Spike going through dragon puberty. Not even kidding. He gets the dragon version of acne breakouts, voice cracking, the sudden need for deodorant and some physical, shall we say, enhancements. 
I felt this episode really captured the struggle growing males go through in their mid-teen years. All the awkwardness, moodiness and confusion that comes with it. They even put a part in about Spike sleeping till noon without realizing it. Totally every teenager ever. Better yet, this feeds directly into how I always viewed Spike as a teenager trying to make it through life without much help.
That brings us to a subtle but huge detail that a lot of writers fail to capture or even think about: Spike is a dragon growing up around ponies. This is big because, in this episode, Twilight had no idea what was wrong with him, nor did anypony else. Without Smolder there, he would've been on his own. Growing up as the only member of your species has got to be difficult for him and this episode played well into that hardship, even if it was just trivial for most of the episode.
All in all, this was a fun, creative and rather mature themed episode I think not only Spike fans but fans of character growth in general will appreciate. Outside of a couple jokes that didn't really hit the target, I don't really have any flaws I can think of.

I'm a simple man. Give me a good Spike episode and I'll give grotesque amounts of smiles.
I knew that the wings thing was gonna happen because people kept talking about it from the leaks, but I never watched them. Now that I've actually gotten the chance to see it properly, I am SO in the same boat as you are. Finally Spike is more than just the comic relief. I mean yes, he's always been able to help out in some minor way, but with his new ability to be airborne, he is going to be all over any issues that may pop up.
Two more things:
— Rainbow Dash is going to be SO psyched.
— Scootaloo is going to be SO pissed. Sorry, Scoots, the li'l dragon beat ya to it.
Next up, the episode starring Spike's "father."
