Okay, let's get the obligatory out the way: SPIKE. HAS. WINGS!!!

I really didn't like this episode. But, I also have a deep hate of how Rarity and Spike interact, plus we had the whole issue of Rarity and Zecora being captured at the end then Twilight not being able to save them and needing Spikes help. Even though he has never flown before and he is somehow better at flying then Twilight after like 2 seconds of practice.

For me the only good part was Spike and Smolder interacting. I enjoyed their dynamic, her being the older dragon who know what was up but still being a dragon and messing with him. Really I think the episode would have been much better if they had it be Smolder and Spike instead of Rarity. Also, get rid of the whole damsel-ed thing.

Sucks having to work mornings on Saturdays.

From what I heard from people who saw the episode early it was apparently pretty good episode.

Twilight: "You should go somewhere less flammable."
Me: "What is less flammable than a castle made of crystal?"

I thought it was pretty good. Not the best, but definitely better than "Non-Compete Clause". Zecora is always a welcome addition to the episodes, and I'm glad we also got to see a new Everfree predator. I like how more and more they're referencing the fact that death–at least by being eaten–is a thing in Equestria.

Really, I was concerned that Spike's wings would look awkward, but they actually fold up rather nicely when not in use, so he doesn't look too terribly different when he's not flying.

Overall, 7.8/10.

The castle is made of crystal. The furniture and items inside it are not.

And of course, I imagine ponies are on the flammable side as well.

I love the artwork!

Hooray for a great Spike episode! Maybe I won't be the only one who writes him on a regular basis now!

...At least until the hype from it drops off.

My reactions:

derpicdn.net/img/2018/5/26/1741769/medium.png
YAY! PEEWEE! Man, he's gotten big!

derpicdn.net/img/2018/5/26/1741772/medium.png
Yeah, I can sympathize with Spike. Zits like those are a total pain.

Ugh, I hope stone scale isn't contagious... hope they have cream for that...

derpicdn.net/img/2018/5/26/1741797/medium.png
CHRIST SPIKE, WHAT DID YOU EAT!?

Wow, the one time Rarity gives him more attention...

A Phoenix feather dress? Sounds pretty cool!

derpicdn.net/img/2018/5/26/1741786/medium.jpeg
Also, the school gives tours now?

Yeesh, trouble controlling the volume of your voice and burping flames are the symptoms? How bad are these stone scales?!

Geed induced bigness? Is that what all dragons call it?

derpicdn.net/img/2018/5/26/1741791/medium.jpeg
I can't tell if Smolder is being a troll or speaking from experience...

Wait, Tazalewurms EAT dragons!?

derpicdn.net/img/2018/5/26/1741811/medium.png
Shoo Pinkie, this isn't your episode.

derpicdn.net/img/2018/5/26/1741814/medium.jpeg
Zecora, when one needs a more... mystic solution.

Phoenix feathers remove others hearing? That's just... weird...

derpicdn.net/img/2018/2/17/1658398/medium.png
HOLY SHIT THAT ROC IS HUGE!!!

Seriously, how did nobody notice this giant bird near Everfree!?

Twilight, how and when did YOU get here?

Is... is Spike turning to stone? How the hell-

.....................

derpicdn.net/img/2018/5/26/1741837/medium.png
WOOOHOOOO!! SPIKE'S GOT WINGS!!!

derpicdn.net/img/2018/5/26/1741845/medium.png
Man, he's a quick study when it comes to flying!

Aw yeah, Twilight and Spike teamwork!

derpicdn.net/img/2018/4/14/1707410/medium.gif
Spike used flamethrower! It's super effective!

"I didn't know if you'd ever get wings!"
Neither did the fandom Twilight.

derpicdn.net/img/2018/5/26/1741840/medium.jpeg
And these wings come with a bonus for Spike! More attention from Rarity!

Well, I don't think I need to say anything but I will anyway, THIS EPISODE WAS AWESOME! We got more info on how Dragon Anatomy works, decent characterization for Spike, and of course, the little guy FINALLY got his wings!

All in all, I'll give it a 9.5 out of 10!

One of the better Spike eps

no Red Bull required

So are Ember and Torch covered in dragon acne scars?

4869874
Not exactly, the stone scales completely vanished after they get their wings

Pretty sure everyone is thinking the same things:
1) Rainbow Dash is gonna be psyyyyyyyyyyyyched.
2) Scootaloo is gonna be piiiiiiiiiiiiiiissed.

4869877 Oh yes :-)

So, this show has now covered the grieving process, marketing psychology, identity politics, the intricacies of the education system, and now puberty. And I'm pretty sure I'm missing some stuff. Have I praised this show for how much it respects the audience's intelligence yet? :ajsmug:

There's no doubt about it; this is an episode on puberty, plain and simple. And for what it's worth, it was handled quite well. I'm reminded of the Teen Titans episode where Starfire went through very much the same thing Spike did here (for the record, that episode was one of my favorites of the original Teen Titans). The only difference is that Starfire didn't really have anyone to go to who could help her. Spike at least had Zecora.

I'd give props for giving one of the School Six a stand-out moment to flesh them out a bit, but really, Smolder. I think you need to study more in your friendship classes. You couldn't have said "Yeah, you go through all this horrible stuff, but hey! You get a sweet pair of wings for it!" or anything like that? Just congratulating Spike for molting isn't going to get the message across. :trixieshiftright:

This episode was great. A ton of fun with an epic clash with Twilight and Spike double teaming a Roc for the climax. If I had to find a flaw it's that i felt Rarity was kind of unnecessary, the episode really should have focused on Smolder and Spike. but other than that it was great, 9/10 for me.

I have only have one thing to say about this episode. SHIT WHEN DOWN HARD.

Also I always knew that this was going to happen since season 2.

4869850
Our wittle Spikey-Wikey is growing up! *sheds tears of joy*

4869883
The show's been covering puberty since Season 1 - the whole concept of cutie marks is tied to it.

But yeah, this is a pretty good take on it.

4869853
The first bit you talk about could be explained by how dragons of Spike’s kind get wings naturally, so learning to fly wasn’t a big deal for him. Twilight was a unicorn and got wings because of a special circumstance, so learning to fly would be harder for her.

Spike meets puberty.

Also the roc.

And a happy ending.

4869877
I like the idea that she learns to fly with the help of Magitek.

4869853
Theory time on Spike's flight abilities.

Twilight got her wings and alicorn status through magical intervention. Spike got his wings by simply aging up and growing into them. Knowledge of flight was possibly possessed on some instinctual level, or down in his DNA, and he never realized it until he actually had his wings available to him. You certainly never see a butterfly struggling to figure out how to fly after it emerges from the cocoon, despite its body being completely different from the caterpillar it went in as.

That synopsis makes me wanna cry.:fluttershbad:

It's good to see Spike finally evolve and I enjoyed this episode. ^3^

Since when does Twilight have the accuracy of a Stormtrooper? O3O

4869914
Since always. Usually it's because she closes her eyes to aim. :twilightsheepish:

4869853

I really didn't like this episode. But, I also have a deep hate of how Rarity and Spike interact, plus we had the whole issue of Rarity and Zecora being captured at the end then Twilight not being able to save them and needing Spikes help. Even though he has never flown before and he is somehow better at flying then Twilight after like 2 seconds of practice.

Dragons are meant to fly and unicorns are not.
I think it is an instinct.
Many animals can walk almost right after birth.

Question, now that SPIKE has WINGS, will this mean he'll finally get MORE RESPECT & be treated MORE like an EQUAL among ponies from now on?

4869897
I know!! *sheds tears of joy*

4869924 You're so funny.

This is a really, really good episode, and the first of season 8 to truly wow me.

4869929
yeah, it seems like season number 8 is starting to turn into a good season.

LLLLLLLLLLAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRSSSSSSSOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In all seriousness, though, this was great episode. The call-backs to older seasons were great, and I once again must praise this show for not being afraid to break the status quo and let characters change and grow!

4869946
It seems like like can say goodbye to punching bag Spike.

My little boy... is growing up...:raritycry:

I really liked Smoulder in this episode.

It was very entertaining to see her take gleeful joy in filling Spike in on dragon puberty. :rainbowlaugh: By dragon standards, that seems awfully caring of her.

4869949
I think most off us feel like this.

4869876
A pity. When they faded into the background but were still visible I was hoping that was part of his new look.

4869886
Agreed on a great episode and yes, Rarity was only there to push Spike's puberty through and was pretty unnecessary.

4869897
SQUEEE!!!!!!!!!!

4869924
Hopefully. Except for Rarity who keeps using him as a dress horse/dragon/whatever :twilightangry2: Spike, u need 2 stand up and not take that anymore, buddy!

4869914
when she's trying to controle the rocs movements im guessing

4869931
i cant wait for more. maybe they'll shed light on where they found spikes egg.

4869946
that seems to be the accepted theory so far. and it does make sense.

Twilight, Starlight, Spike. Purple seems to be becoming quite the master race color.

4869914

She seemed like she was hitting the Roc the majority of the time, and while she missed a few times trying to hit its foot, to be fair, that is a smaller target, and she did manage to land a hit there.

Overall, I don't think her aim was actually that bad. I blame Starlight's influence for her missing less.

Am I the only one who heard Smolder's description of Rocs and immediately thought of Wind Waker?

Best Highlight of the episode? Spike getting Wings! :D

This was a good episode, and the payoff of Spike getting wings is glorious. A lot of possibilities have been opened up for Spike's character after this in terms of story potential and character interactions.

The pacing felt a little clunky in places, and while some of the jokes and gags landed, others didn't really reach me. But the writer did an excellent job of making molting feel unique to dragons while also making it relatable to the puberty we mere humans experience. For Spike and Smolder's scene, she acted in a way I would imagine a dragon who is still learning about friendship would act, and it felt in character for her. That is to say, she was brash and a little insensitive, but not nasty or bullying, either.

I did absolutely love the fact that Rarity showed so much concern about Spike's condition, and I think the show has matured the interactions between them quite a bit. Spike still has a crush on her, but he doesn't act like a total basket case, either. And while Rarity still has Spike do things for her, it doesn't seem as much like she's simply taking advantage of him, either. They seem to be real friends that enjoy each other's company, now. And Spike's fear at being seen by Rarity in his condition made me feel pretty sympathetic toward him. They blended the comedy in with actually treating Spike's feelings seriously, and I appreciate that.

I love the inclusion of Zecora. She is horribly underused and her character really shined, here. The scene with Rarity not being able to hear anything in Zecora's hut was a mix of funny and a little bit obnoxious, but overall I thought it was great. The ending scene with the giant roc bird trying to eat Spike was a tad bit messy and awkward to watch, but Rarity had some great comedic lines during it and I thought it was entertaining. As for the wing reveal scene... well, for me it was a little underwhelming in terms of the scene's impact, but I still liked how they did it. After all, this isn't as monumental as the CMC getting their cutie marks, but it's still a great moment in the show for Spike's character.

The worst part of the episode though, in my opinion, was Twilight. That's not to say I didn't like her or that I was offended or something, but she seemed a little overly dismissive and self-absorbed at times. But that was just a vibe I got, not necessarily something that permeated the episode. She came through in the end, for sure.

Overall, I liked it a lot. Very solid episode. 8.5/10

4869853

Actually yeah, having Smolder spend the episode taunting and teasing him with the truth would've been pretty great, but it was nice to see Zecora again. I don't think she was in Season 7 at all, and had only one appearance in season 5 and 6 each.

This episode leaned a little hard on callbacks and running gags for its humor and writing, but it still had a sense of energy that I found appealing. My biggest problem with it was their continued refusal to actually reflect the passage of time in its characters' designs. They keep talking about how much time has passed, but other than a few minor additions, neither Spike nor the CMC's have physically changed at all. Slapping Cutie Marks on the CMC's and the world's smallest wings on Spike don't exactly make them look older. But then they can't force Hasbro to change those toy molds too much, and they've gotta keep those marketable Faust designs intact.

Overall I'd give it a passing grade, all things considered.

4869922
Sure most animals can walk after birth but they can't walk well, it takes a bit to get used to legs. Thats why baby deer tend to just curl up and hide instead of running off like their parents.

4869907
You do see a butterfly's wings take awhile to actually be useful though. Since they need to dry and harden.

4869903
see the above responses.

I mean really its only an issues since it came down to him having to save Rarity so of course he needed to be a great flier. I actually like the idea of Spike getting wings and growing up. I just really don't like how they did it and how it came at the expense of other characters.

4869960
now that i think about it yeah it does a little bit.( the bird guardian/god right?) though from what remember of the legend of the roc its nowhere big enough.
