Maybe the artist thought it was supposed to be the induction of an actual soccer ball · 6:14pm May 22nd, 2018

This is Brandi Chastain, world-class soccer player and recent inductee to her home city's sports Hall Of Fame.

This is Brandi Chastain's Hall Of Fame plaque.

This is what resisting the urge to commit murder looks like.

This is an earlier impact from the federal cutting of arts programs than I thought we would get.

Is that, like, Jimmy Carter?

Guess it's the same guy who did Cristiano Ronaldo sculpture:

Thankfully, it got fixed later and it looks closer to the original now:

I guess it was because the artist behind this one was Spanish. They have some, umm... experiences with art:

Twitter's been turning the plaque into a Rorschach test. A significant percentage of people are seeing Gary Busey. Mickey Rooney's turned up, as has Babe Ruth. And I think someone tried Chris Farley. But Jimmy Carter? That's new.

...plausible, but new.

And that's the other Twitter reaction: people are bringing up prior horrible artwork depicting athletes and comparing it to this. Ronaldo's been invoked several times.

And this is why it's a bad idea to make a portrait using Mercator projection.

As a Spanish, I can certainly certify that the Ecce Homo restoration fiasco was a bad experience for us. Just look at the before/after pictures. And the worst thing was that it was a heartfelt attempt from someone who just didn't know better.

Guess it's because it looks similar. On a side note, the plaque's expression suggests constipation. Maybe it's even the size of a football.

Also, I wonder if those plaques suffer from the same issue as tattoos of babies. I mean, tattooing your baby's face on yourself is already kinda ghetto, but most people seem to do it directly from a photo, without thinking how it'd look drawn on most definitely not-flat skin (some artist would probably put that better), ending up with something that'd make even H.P. Lovecraft shit himself:

I've heard this town got a lot of tourists, though.

What do you even say if this happens? 'It's great you honored me and all, but does anyone else think the portrait could use a little... work?'

Y'know, from the angle in the third picture it looks a lot more reasonable to me than it does straight on, which makes me wonder if the original sculpture got flattened a bit during shipping or casting. That apparently happened with the Cristiano Ronaldo sculpture that got mentioned earlier. The original clay looks, if not fantastic, at least not horrifying. It honestly looks like somebody along the lines straight up dropped it in that case.

No idea if that happened to this one, but maaaan, that's *really* gotta suck for the artist if so.

I'm definitely seeing The Babe's plaque from Yankee Stadium in there. On the plus side, being compared to one of the best players to pick up a bat is sort of a complement? :applejackconfused:

That..."artist"...needs to be flogged.

Can she sue for libel?

I'm definitely reminded of a Simpson's episode where a - That's right, it was a statue of Jimmy Carter!

Like from the Simpson's episode 'Marge in Chains'!

I don't know if I ever saw that episode, to be honest.

That sculptor needs to be blacklisted. No more public monuments. :applecry: :facehoof:

Why does the artist think she looks like what would happen if the Joker poisoned Pat Sajak to death?

I cannot help but feel that there may have been a mix-up for the portraits. Maybe that particular portrait was meant for some Brandon Christian person?

I know, right? Should have used Winkel Tripel to minimize those distortions...
:twistnerd:

I confess I downloaded both pictures (#1 and #2) and played around with matching them up. Your quip about the distorted projection seems quite accurate. Aside from her weird hair, her facial features actually match up quite well; they are just smooshed and flattened and spread out.

Ugh... part of me is wondering if/hoping that... thing was made using some kind of "photo to etching" technology.

I have no clue what the proper term would be for the process, but I really don't want to believe that a human being thought that looked fine.
