FYI Spoilers
The Parent Map
So. The first episode--episode 8--was honestly kind of forgettable. I legitimately forgot what it was about for a good few minutes and had to think of what it was to remind myself.
The plot basically goes: Starlight and Sunburst go on a friendship mission that turns out to be their parents.
That's it.
Yeah.
These missions had their novelty, but they're really starting to feel formulaic.
My favourite bits had to be the--literally a rock--traditional Maud Loaf.
This image looks like the bread is sprouting roots.
We also got smelly ponies, for which I'm grateful we got this wonderful stench.
All-in-all, the episode was kind of average. I call it a 5/10 - Still better than the Maud Couple
Non-compete Clause
And now for the hot topic of the day! Honestly, I don't see what everyone has wrong with this episode. I'd heard people calling it the "worst episode of the season" and "the first dud" (clearly didn't see The Maud Couple [1])
Watching it, I actually found it really enjoyable. For one, unlike The Parent Map, we're focused on character that I actually cared about. Well, kinda, more than Starlight and Crew.
It wasn't forced, it wasn't rushed, it taught a very good moral about teamwork and getting along--for which AJ and Rainbow Dash were the best option they could've gone with. The atmosphere felt like something that could've occurred in earlier seasons, and every minute was filled with some kind of shenanigans born of these two characters simply interacting.
The end was an interesting and creative twist. I especially like how, even through everything, the students still came off thinking it was intentional of them, and--of course--Twi saw straight through it.
The major complaint I've heard was that the characters were bastardised, but I disagree. They went back, but not unreasonably...
I have to rate this highly: 7/10 - Underrated
How you enjoyed my two-day dribble! Be sure to come back next time when I try to ketchup again.
[1] Yes, I'm still salty on stick dude.
P.S. Expect some Ghost Squad updates in the coming weeks.
