Moth Plays Dark Cloud 2: Chapter 1, Episode 1: Redheads and Red Stones · 11:54pm May 11th, 2018

In which a king is slain, a vacuum is repaired, a ticket is stolen, a stone is sought, a clown is psychotic, and a rich boy escapes into the sewers.

Dark Chronicle, known in North America as Dark Cloud 2, is the 2003/2004 sequel to Level-5's inaugural action RPG Dark Cloud, released in 2000/2001 as part of the first batch of PlayStation 2 titles.

In every conceivable way superior to the original, Dark Chronicle remains one of the finest action RPGs ever created, with rich gameplay and a superb story, excellent vocal performances by its cast, an incredible, breathtaking soundtrack, and startlingly few bugs and glitches. The cel-shaded visuals were cutting edge at the time...but alas, Dark Chronicle falls firmly into that woeful category of "the greatest games you've never played." So many people have never even heard of it, while its fans are often wistful and enthusiastic about it...and have been demanding Dark Cloud 3 for 15 years.

Alas, it's never going to happen. :raritydespair:

This is one of those "the game becomes your LIFE" games, boasting over 140 hours of content on any given playthrough. Not only is there the main story to consider, there's also a number of sidequests, minigames, and extras--and the main story itself has some side items tied firmly into it, such as the Georama system.

In Dark Chronicle, you're not just progressing through the story and fighting your way through monster-infested dungeons. You're also rebuilding the world...and golfing, and fishing, and going on a photo safari. And more!

Dark Chronicle tells the story of Maximillian, a rich boy from a quiet, sleepy town, and Monica Raybrandt, a princess from the future. Their destines collide because of magical stones which connect the past, present, and future...and bring them both into conflict with an evil force from the distant past which plans to erase the future of the world.

It's also a story about a boy in search of his missing mother, who he hasn't seen in a very long time, and answers about why the city he lives in is cut off from the outside world.

Our adventure begins one fateful night, when all Max wants to do is go see the circus...

What is the red stone? Who was the mysterious red-haired kid? Why is Flotsam so obsessed with the stone? Why does Donny have a hobo camp in the sewers? What happened to Max's mom, and what secret about Palm Brinks is Mayor Need trying so desperately to protect?

Find out in the next episode!

Thanks to PSN we can play some of these classics, like Rogue Galaxy. Funny enough, even though the PS1 and PS2 were some of my first gaming systems, I never played any of the fantasic greats like Suikoden, this, FF, well, anything, etc. It was only later on through emulators (Cause dear God physical copies of these games are ludicrously expensive), and ports was I able to

And depending on how much fun one may or may not be having, those latter activities may take up a damn good chunk of your playtime. :pinkiehappy:

Why does Donny have a hobo camp in the sewers?

...Huh. Right now I'm just wondering why that particular question never came to my mind before. :applejackunsure:

Same company also did White Knight Chronicles 1 and 2. It even has the georama available.

Ah, Spheda. The most hated part of that wonderful, wonderful game. Pray that you get an easy shot, or you'll be resetting the level countless times to avoid the water traps.
