Smashmania: Game modes · 3:12pm May 11th, 2018

It's time to guess which ways to play Smash could be included in the next game. Before we start, I say could and not would or should because, although I don't think these will make it in the game, they're good ideas in their respective areas. Also, I won't include story mode, I believe that needs its own headland and I'll cover it later. Without further ado, let's begin.

Smash modes

King of the hill

I cannot believe this hasn’t happened yet, considering the concept of Smash in terms of fighting qualities. Here’s how it could work: A specific area of the stage will be designated as the hill. The player who stays the longer in it wins. There’s a ton of possibilities here: multiple hills in team battles, an area that randomly switches places every 30 seconds or even a reverse mode, where a negative zone exists at the center of the stage and the only chance of getting points is throwing opponents into it.

Tag team battle

I’m not the first one who has suggested this, but it’s a great idea and needs to happen: each character as a stock. If you lose one character, then the next comes around. Simple as that, and it bothers me that we haven’t got this yet.

Because it’s literally ALREADY IMPLEMENTED IN THE GAME.

The problem I have with this options is how often the players will choose them. We complain about having no options for the main mode, but we're done with coin battle once we finish all required challenges. This worries me.

Trophy collectable mini-game

I’ll be honest: I didn’t like Trophy Rush. Brawl’s Coin Launcher was so much better. And since every Smash has a unique way to earn collectables, I have one: Trophy Pinball, where you launch the ball into the different trophies.

Break the targets

I know many people want character-specific arenas, but with almost 60 characters it’s a nightmare for the developers. So I'm imagining something similar to Brawl, but with more variety and quantity.

Boss Battles

With the option of removing stage hazards, we can finally have this game mode back. And not only that, the developers could find a way to play them (only in this mode), allowing characters such as Ridley to finally be playable. And not just him: Petey Pirahna, Metal Face or even the Wonderful 101.

Smash Run

Smash Run was a great idea, executed poorly. The idea of players running through a large map, filled with enemies from Nintendo games, collecting power-ups to beef up their character's stats, and then using these broken new characters to fight each other is fantastic on paper. The trouble is, it was a lonely experience. There was no way players could interact with one another on the map. Then you'd have a random, sometimes INCREDIBLY short, challenge at the end.

Being able to have each player use their own Switch screen while playing together on the map would go a long way to improving this mode. Also, having some say in the challenge at the end, or at least knowing what it will be from the beginning. This could be a great party mode and a fun, new way to play the game.

Honestly, I didn't mind playing alone since I barely encounter other players in Kirby Air Ride, but I understand why people want this, so let's do it.

Offline Tournament mode

Same as Melee, with some features from Brawl and Smash 4, but OFFLINE, PLEASE! Also, let us have the option for Amiibo tournaments.

Online

Let me create lobbies. I want to be able to play with strangers and talk with them and set my own rules. Maybe I want to play in a stage that isn’t Final Destination, maybe I only want some of the items. Also

Stage builder

Blend the Wii U’s ability to draw a stage with Brawl’s tools such as ladders, conveyor belts, falling blocks, ice blocks, spiky blocks, moving platforms, wheels of fortune, etc. Make it compatible with current and future versions of Smash and allow us to create customizable Break the targets stages. As a last point, let me have the ability to copy and paste these elements, it's so tiring to drag pieces of the stage one by one.

Finally we need more of this

AND MUCH LESS OF THIS

Now it's your turn. Which game modes do you want to see in the next Smash?
