God. I know quite a few people who can relate to Starlight here. It still causes them problems years later.

Spoiler: They fuck

4854058
I KNEW IT! SHIP CONFIRMED!

4854058
DAMMITT! Well that ruined it.

4854060
good thing i avoided all spoilers like their the armageddon virus.

sunburst might be a bigger nerd than twilight. almost. i take that back, thats not possible.

4854056
Wish I had your dedication.

one that doent want anything to change and one that wants everything to change? nice set-up.

4854059
it was inevitable. or i could be their parents.

PREPARE THE SHIP CANNONS!!!!

WE SHALL FIRE AT NOON!!!

Oh, to see the two sides of the hipster, gentrifying coin turning on each other so.

I love it.

4854069
one way or another a ship will sail!

okay with parents like that no wonder they ended up that way.

I suddenly get why Starlight enslaved a town...

An overbearing dad who has difficulty reading body language and navigating social cues? So that's where Starlight gets it from. :twilightoops:

4854075
and sunburst became a hermit.

OMG! Another MILF has been spotted! O3O O3O O3O

a war would have been easier to fix.

So Starlight's father is caught up in the past, and Sunburst's mother is always looking toward the future, but neither are really paying attention to the present.

Starlight, you live in someone else's house who provides for your food, education, and other needs. You are, in fact, a child.

Sunburst. . . you were very lucky.

4854086
Yeah, sounds about right.

So wait. Ponies don't have a naturally pleasant odor? Didn't see that coming.

My reactions:

Oh cool, a Starlight Glimmer episode!
i0.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/000/540/297/184.png
Mmmm.... yes Starlight-haters, your anguish sustains me!

Ok so, how many letters has Sunburst thrown away? Man those parental issues must be really something... does Equestria not have psychiatrists?

Yep, the map is definitely sentient.

Giddy Sunburst is hilarious!

derpicdn.net/img/view/2018/5/5/1724841__safe_screencap_spike_starlight+glimmer_sunburst_the+parent+map_spoiler-colon-s08e08.jpeg
Starlight's reaction actually mirrors the bronies who hate her, can't tell if that's satire or a coincidence.

Also Spike, you CAUSED the Friendship mission in the first place.

Starlight's right, even if you explain it thoroughly there's a chance that your folks won't listen...

Not being allowed to read the books in the library and only being allowed to see the covers!? Dear God it's Twilight's worst nightmare!

derpicdn.net/img/view/2018/5/5/1724847__safe_screencap_firelight_starlight+glimmer_the+parent+map_spoiler-colon-s08e08_discovery+family+logo_duo_father+and+daughter_female_male_mare_.png
Starlight, Rainbow Dash would sympathize with you. Your parents coddling you Non-Stop is just downright embarrassing at times.

derpicdn.net/img/view/2018/5/5/1724845__safe_screencap_firelight_stellar+flare_the+parent+map_spoiler-colon-s08e08_angry_discovery+family+logo_duo_female_male_mare_pony_stallion_unic.png
I'm starting to see who Starlight got her stubborn controlling personality from... makes a little more sense now that I think about it...

CHRIST, HOW HEAVY IS THAT BREAD?!

derpicdn.net/img/2018/5/5/1724952/medium.jpeg
Ok, that gate is ridiculously annoying...

Is it weird that I find sarcastic Sunburst hilarious?

derpicdn.net/img/view/2018/5/5/1724866__safe_screencap_the+parent+map_spoiler-colon-s08e08_discovery+family+logo_starlight%27s+room.jpeg
Starlight Glimmer had an emo phase!? Whole lot of shit started making sense...

....and are we sure they are somehow related to Twilight? All this over-analyzing is starting to get ridiculous!

Step 4: Profit?

derpicdn.net/img/view/2018/5/5/1724876__safe_screencap_the+parent+map_spoiler-colon-s08e08_body+odor_discovery+family+logo.jpeg
Wow, these three are worse actors then Celestia in the previous episode, and that's saying a LOT.

Thanks background Bread Pony!

derpicdn.net/img/view/2018/5/5/1724878__safe_screencap_firelight_starlight+glimmer_sunburst_the+parent+map_spoiler-colon-s08e08_discovery+family+logo.jpeg
Overbearing parents that don't get the point? This is basically Parental Glideance 2.0 isn't it? Yet somehow I still love it...

Thanks for spelling it out for us background ponies!

Go to be honest, having them stop a war would be pretty entertaining.

Sunburst: "Oh, I'm not sorry for that."

Wow, Sunburst is a smartass! And I LOVE IT!

Starlight: "I have made plenty of mistakes, but I learn from them."

Beautiful, Simply Beautiful.

Okay, everybody's asking so I might as well too: where is Starlight's mother and where is Sunburst's father!?

Anywho, this is the decently entertaining episode. It did feel like a repeat of Parental Glidance at certain points, but it managed to do it better in several aspects, we got a little more characterization for Starlight and Sunburst and some insight to the relationship with their parents which does hold a bit of relevance to how they turned out.

All in all, pretty good, I give it 7.5 out of 10.

Cool episode. Lots of great faces. Loved the bait and switch friendship problem. :rainbowlaugh:

I do wonder where the other parents are, though... Sunburst's dad? Starlight's mom?

Well that was a great episode

This episode was better then I expected.

Starlight's relationship with her father reminds me of Applebloom's relationship with Applejack.

Though it's not outright stated in the episode, I'm imagining that years ago, it went something like this:

Sunburst, after leaving town, his mother would write him letters every other day or so, and he, getting sick of it, started throwing them out. Starlight, let's say she didn't muster up the resolve to try writing until say, weeks or months down the line (believe it or not, that sounds like something I could definitely see myself doing.), but at that point, Sunburst was routinely throwing out letters that came from that place, automatically presuming they came from Stellar Flare.

And that is why Starlight writing to Sunburst didn't end up working out.

4854095
Was wondering the same thing. Someone on the stream I was watching suggested single parents. I'm not convinced.
4854101
This is VERY plausible.

I really enjoyed this episode and I will definitely watch this again, again and again.

Lots and lots of shipping material for fans in this one and I really like Sunburst and Starlight's parents.

Did anyone see the beard on that one stallion that was walking by outside the shop? It was HUGE! and I like it! Just like in the episode "Grannies Gone Wild", I am really liking these new ponies that are being developed.

I will say this, I wish Spike went with them and I even like that Sunburst even mentioned that.

Also, seeing Starlight's room was interesting. I never expected her to be into metal and or goth. I wonder if she developed that after Sunburst left her, because it definitely wasn't there when he was around when they were younger

This episode kinda defines the term "anti-climax". I was waiting for the final twist or wrinkle but it never quite came.

Anyway, the episode was kinda... meh, I'll just describe it as an episode that exists. It didn't make me mad, but it didn't delight me either. I think what I'm most disappointed about was the failure to tie the situation in with Starlight's past. It was a prime opportunity to explain part of it and yet they simply decided not to. The glimpse of Starlight's old room definitely shows how she careened into a downward spiral towards the end of her time there, but nothing was really mentioned about it. Her family/friendship problems were the cause of her descent into madness and yet they just pull some generic "overbearing father" plot out of the air instead of addressing the things that the audience wanted to know about her.

What could've been a Starlight Glimmer introspection just ended up being "Parental Glideance" and "Forever Filly" tossed into a soup bowl.

... Also is there not enough room in town for both a fruit stand AND a perfume stand? It's a big town...

4854093
The fact that they have showers and baths wasn't a hint?

4854086
Yeah, that's pretty accurate.

4854075
4854076
4854077
With how their parents acted around them it makes a disturbing amount of sense.

Okay, who's up for Parental Glideance, the Unicorn Edition? Seriously, this episode's key conflict is mostly a re-tread of Rainbow Dash's problems with her parents but with a slightly different flavour to make it look like it isn't essentially a retread.

It's a genuine shame because the initial feel of Sire's Hollow and the clash of preservation vs. development or established vs innovation was quite interesting. I particularly liked the possibility that, in their domineering and controlling ways, Firelight and Stellar Flare may have inadvertently taught Starlight her dystopic vision and made Sunburst the neurotic wreck that he seems to be.

The big problem for me was that they literally jammed the resolution into the last five minutes after wasting most of the episode with the red herring. It would have been nice if the resolution had been something other than a 60-second heartfelt declaration. It was that quick 'solution button' ending that really spoiled this episode for me. It was a shame because I really liked the inhabitants of Sire's Hollow. There could be a lot of interesting adventures here and I'm hoping that, even if the series does not return here, fan-fiction writers will at some point.

So, yeah, a big let down after last week.

:twilightoops: THAT... ACTUALLY MAKES A LOT OF SENSE!

4854097
And Rainbow Dash's relationship with her parents.

I feel like I've seen this same kind plot done several times before, and in most cases far better than it was here. Not that great an episode.

4854056
wow thanks for letting us know you're not going to watch this episode, we were desperate to know your stance

the loss of your viewership will create tears in the fabric of space and time which will be irreparable because your opinions are ones which should be taken to the highest standard of attention

dude it's 2018 why are you people continuing to let the past be today

Loving this episode so far.

Particularly Sunburst reopening and closing the door to get the point across.

"Why couldn't we have been sent to stop a war or something"

derpicdn.net/img/view/2016/4/17/1134457__safe_screencap_king+sombra_the+cutie+re-dash-mark_alternate+timeline_animated_crystal+war+timeline_king_solo_trotting.gif

"You rang?"

The Bigger question: Who is Starlight Glimmer's Mom?

4854149

Clearly since both of their parents were single the episode is about divorce!

Anyway, thinking on it a bit more, it's a bit puzzling that the episode careens past two far more interesting and original concepts on its way to its well-tread finale.

First you have Starlight and Sunburst returning home to find that it has changed, which in itself could've been a full episode/moral (the whole "you can never really go home" concept).

Then you have the whole "Traditionalism VS Modernization" thing that also could've been a full episode on its own.

Instead the episode skips past both of these like a stone with barely a comment and ends up right back in a place we've seen in this very show before at least three times, of the youngsters having overbearing caregivers.

Go back to one of those other concepts, damnit, I wanna see what the show has to say about those.

4854101
That... would very neatly tie up a lot of loose ends.

i accidentally found a leaked version of this last week...i won't say where. the messed-up title should have been a clue.

Jesus, the way you had that header worded I though that the writers had decided to make starlight and sunburst siblings. Would have totally put a damper on one of my favorite ships.
4854156
While those would be really good concepts, I don't know if you could fit one of those into a 20 minute episode.

4854056
You clearly don't know what a Mary Sue is.

Plus, your loss for missing the best episodes.

Every time the map calls on a character that isn't one of the Mane Six, I try to think of a story in which it calls one of the background characters that I keep writing about. I have yet to come up with a good one.

Not much to say about this episode. My main takeaway was that I wish there wasn't an apparent mandate to have a moral in every episode. Because while in a broad sense, the moral appears to be "appreciate your parents" (again), more specifically, the moral this time seems to be "continue to appreciate your parents after you've grown up and moved away." Which isn't something that's particularly relevant to the target audience of the show.

And if the goal was to just tell a fun story without worrying about providing a moral to the elementary school students, then they undercut that by overexplaining things with the second wrap-up on the train platform.

Personally, I'd be thrilled if the makers of the show would feel less obligated to write for the youngest viewers and just make episodes that cater to a general audience (while keeping it G-rated, of course). But so long as there's a difference between TV-Y and TV-G, I guess that won't happen here.

Shows why Starlight made no friends. Starlight clearly says her father prevented her from making any more friends. He won't let her talk to ponies cause they are strangers. A stranger is someone that hasn't become your friend yet.

If he's stopping her from talking to any ponies now, imagine how it must have been when she was a filly.

This was a really good episode. One of the best of the season.

4854094
I'm getting vibes that Starlights Mom might not be alive and hasn't been for awhile. Might explain why her father is overly smothering and overly protective of her. Especially if Starlight really looks like her.
