Thoughts on Avengers: Infinity War *SPOILERS* · 8:50pm Apr 28th, 2018

Not exactly a review, per se, but more random musings. There are a few spoilers, so I'll leave it all below the jump.

Oh, and Adorable Applejack before I forget:

You know, as I left the theater, I was thinking 2 things:

1. I really need to see Black Panther. Those Wakandan guys were badass.

2. OMG best superhero movie ever 12/10 it was okay IGN

But after I rode home and calmed down, I realized, it really isn't. I mean, don't get me wrong, the film is fantastic in every way. Certainly the most enjoyable movie I've seen this year. And I wasn't alone. When Thor appeared on the Batttlefield with his axe, the entire theater was on their feet, whooping and hollering. The opening was so menacing, with Hiemdal and Loki's deaths, and the Hulk getting the crap beat out of him.

Thanos was such a effective villain. People say Killmonger from Black Panther is the best Marvel movie villain, but to me he has an uphill battle against Thanos. They did such a good job making him... hmm, not humanized, but not one-dimensional. He actually cries when he kills Gamora, and at the end, after all his fighting. when he smiles, it's not an evil, " MUAHAHAHAHA" smile. It;s a genuine smile. He legit thinks he did the best thign possible for the universe.

For an ensemble movie, they did a great job at balancing every body's roles. With so many leading actors/actresses, everyone got at least a bit of an arc, and everyone got their screen time.

The feels were real, man. I think I went, "Holy shit, no!" at every major death, but none more than Spiderman, with his little David Tennant, "I don't want to go" moment.

However, I realize that the only reason I had such emotional reactions was that I have been on this journey with these characters for the past, what, 15 years? I've seen Thor's fight to redeem his brother. I've seen the relationship between Peter Quill and Gamora develop. I've felt Tony's want to leave it all behind, but knowing he never can. If I hadn't seen all those, again what, 20 movies? If I hadn't seen them, this would have been just another kick-ass superhero movie. it's emotional gut punches only land if you've seen the previous movies.

And as far as the deaths go... well, they've already announced sequels to Spider-Man and Doctor Strange, I'm pretty sure. So you know they're gonna do an ass pull and... well, you know what? Thinking as I type this, it wouldn't really be an ass pull if they brought the characters back to life, would it? They showed with Vision that the Time Stone can bring people back from the dead. In fact, I think that's what the next one is gonna be about. It's called Infinity Gauntlet, right? Superhero nerds, back me up here. I mean, I'm pretty sure those like Loki, Heimdal, and Gamora wil stay dead. That would be a bit much. But half the universe that died in the "event?" They'll be back.

Now, that all said, I do think this is a near-perfect movie in almost all regards. I have said this before, and I'll say it again: The Marvel Cinematic Universe will go down in history as one of, if not the most successful and ambitious project in movie history. 20+ films, and all of them at least "good." The worst was, what, Incredible Hulk? And even that was, it's not that "It's not good." More that "It's not as good." But from Iron Man to Black Panther, each of the MCU movies have been immensely entertaining. I can't wait for next year, and the epic conclusion of this tale.

Oh, and is it just me, or FUCKING CAPTAIN MARVEL HYPUUURAAAAA?!?!?!?!

hulk getting worf'd set the tone for the movie. basically killing everyone not an OG MCU avenger was very surprising. i half expected a child gamora to come out of that retirement shack because he had all the stones and could do what the fuck he wanted.

thor showing how truly strong he could be was the highlight for me. that and asking if being dead will kill him...

Rage against the dying of the light wasn't quite on target, but close enough.

I don't like this. Death is stupid and needs fixing. I know this isn't really the point, but it's where Peter's moment took me.

This movie was only possible, at all, because they spent the last couple of decades building up to it, establishing the world and the characters and the tropes. There's no way they could possibly have introduced that many characters in a single film. Even if it were a (staggeringly high budget) TV series, it would have needed at least three or four seasons to build up that much lore. It's a really impressive piece of media engineering.

I think my favourite bit, odd though it may sound, is the credits. We're so used to our Marvel films ending on a high note followed by a characterful conclusion, followed by a light-hearted bonus scene in the credits. Every single Marvel film has done this, and we've been trained to expect it. Which is why, when most cinemas would have been empty 30 seconds into the credits, the audience this time were sitting there for the entire credit sequence with its black screen and sad-dramatic orchestral score wondering, "Are they ... are they doing a thing? Or are they ... not doing a thing?" It's a troll that's been 20 years in the making, and it meant that people were forced to sit there in the dark contemplating the ending they just watched. There was no cheerful comforting banter ending, no softening of the blow. It just drifted straight through.

Also, yes, go see Black Panther. It's one of the good ones.

Loki is a trickster, he is. I can see him coming back. Unfortunately, not Hiemdal(sp?). He doesn't seem the the type to want to come back.

I haven't seen the Black Panther movie because I'm not black and don't understand the black struggle. It would be blasphemous for me to go.

To be honest, I haven't watched a superhero movie since Amazing Spiderman. I'm a bit fatigued is all. I think we're due for the rise of a new genre. The Venom one looks mildly interesting, though.

Have you seen the Captain Marvel outfit? It looks hideous.

Two weeks until Black Panther is released on DVD. Darnit.

No kidding, this is exactly what my brother and I were sitting there thinking.

Actually, it's 10. The first MCU film Iron Man came out in 2008.

Close. Infinity War is the 19th MCU film.

I mean, I'm pretty sure those like Loki, Heimdal, and Gamora wil stay dead.

I'm personally not too sure about that. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 is slated to come out in 2020, which means it'll come out after Avengers 4/Infinity War Part 2/whatever the fudge it's called does in 2019. From what I've heard though it's supposed to be a prequel to Infinity War, which I guess changes nothing. Though it should explain how Peter and Gamora got together, how and/or why they got a new ship just like the Milano, and where Kraglin went. Anyway, I imagine Infinity War Part 2 will end with them defeating Thanos and destroying most if not all the Infinity Stones. I have this sense that when the Soul Stone is destroyed, Gamora will come back to life. Not sure why; I just do.

As for Loki, Heimdall, and the rest of the Asgardians, well in the comics after Ragnarok, the Asgardians end up being reborn on Earth. Loki actually ends up reborn in a female form resembling Lady Sif, but later on he's also reborn as a kid and becomes known as "Kid Loki". I could see either of those things happening though I think Kid Loki was a rather popular take on Loki so that's probably the most likely.

To be fair, I'm about as white of a white dude as it gets, and I loved Black Panther. It's got some heavy themes, sure, but that's easily what makes it worth watching.

So yeah, Jake The Army Guy, go watch Black Panther! You'll enjoy it (and then wish the Wakandans had more to do in Infinity War).

I've felt Tony's want to leave it all behind, but knowing he never can.

You mean how Robert Downey Jr wants to leave, but never can. Especially now that Benedict Cumberbach has forced him to star in another Marvel movie while he gets to take a little breather until like maybe the end of Infinity Gauntlet 2 XD
