And let there be no moaning of the bar(cast) · 4:52pm Apr 20th, 2018

I just turned down a Barcast interview.

I thought about doing it. Five, maybe ten seconds' worth. But then I went back to their YouTube page to see what they'd done with other writers (et. all), and hit the barrier.

It's not what's frequently low page views. (If you don't want to do something for a small audience, don't write fanfic.) It wasn't what was promised/threatened as potentially rude or intrusive questions, which could be ignored at will. It certainly wasn't the interviewers.

I just don't have the equipment required for a voice chat through Discord, or a voice chat through anything. (And I'm not that happy about the prospect of people hearing me to begin with.) The best I could do would be to hopefully type fast enough for some level of efficiency while someone else read it off on the other end. Not workable in this format: I'm not sure how fast I type, but I know I can't do 100 wpm. And I might not be able to hear the questions: my speakers would at least try to relay, but joining a voice channel without the full equipment -- that's chancier. And for some reason, I suspect that room isn't set up for typed responses.

So it goes. I saw that several of you have been through this and, following prompt surgery, lived. But I won't be joining the list.

The good news: bottom of the interview barrel reached!

The way I saw it, I was burrowing up from the bottom of the barrel. :derpytongue2:

In any case, while I definitely would've made time for that interview, I can certainly understand your reluctance to make your voice known to all and sundry (or at least to folks who listen to the Barcast.) And, of course, the issue with your lack of audio equipment. To paraphrase the Simpsons, very few novels are written live. It puts a terrible strain on the author's wrist.

Logitech H390 USB work OK for you?

My own experiences with Skype group chats and other teleconferencing platforms has left no doubt in my mind that they are of no use to humanity whatsoever. A complete waste of time. An email exchange is 10,000 times more effective, and a face-to-face meeting is 1,000,000 times better.

Kek. Nah. That's a retarded thing to say, mate.

I completely understand your reluctance. I was hesitant to let my voice be heard for a long time, and with good reason. And I respect that, it's totally reasonable, especially if sound equipment is problematic. The door is always open if you find you want to do it in the future, and thanks for the kind words. Glad to know it wasn't just because we scared you off.
Believe it or not, we actually kinda like you.

Eh, I have absolutely no voice chat equipment either - not since my old MS game voice-control software doofer unit died, nor any camera to speak of. (I suppose I might be able to use my tablet or something.)

'Course, even then it'd have to be my public illusion, since - to my endless regret - Aotrs regs forbid me appearing in my natural form to maintain official plusible deniability. (Else I would have long since turned up in orbit in a starshaip and done one o' them global broadcast "you suck humans" speeches long ago. Followed by some... Creative... orbital bombardment.)

Feel you on this. I hate the idea of being interviewed and having some audio of me just floating around out there on the internet. Plus there's no worse sound than your own voice played back to you. Somehow the only parts that record are all the worst aspects.

You don't strike me as the type to shoot off your mouth and say something careless that you have to walk back. The reluctance to do a spoken interview is very understandable, though. If you'd actually had the equipment available to do it, think you still would have turned it down?

Aw, I'm a fan of both you and the Barcast and would have enjoyed hearing you on the podcast. I'm sure you would have had no shortage of answers to the regular question about your funniest anecdote. That said, I understand the reluctance to have your voice broadcast live on the internet.

Voice is better than email for quickly handling simple discussion without needing to be a two hour back and forth email chain, especially when meeting in person is impracrical due to geographic constraints. It also avoids the tendency in email to put off answers if you don't know in hopes that someone else will reply, which is very useful to avoid dead ends that leave projects stranded.

You know that they've got other uses as well, including live interviews?

There's just so much more you can get out of a conversation when you're talking with someone than with just email, and there's so much convenience when using a program instead of meeting people who might be all the way across countries or even continents. Discord and other VOIP have the best of both worlds in Voice and convenience.

TL; DR, get good
