Episode Spoilers (Grannies Gone Wile) · 6:23pm Apr 18th, 2018
Well... that was an episode. I honestly don't have a lot to say. It wasn't bad but it wasn't great either. It was 'meh'.... In all honesty I just feel 'meh' with this season thus far, much to my surprise and disappointment. The Maud Couple is the only one that sticks out to me and that episode was good. Not great but still good. Maybe I'm just not too thrilled by the episode contents. I know a lot of people loved last week's episode even though I didn't. This one....
Well let me talk about it. So basically the other Wonberbolt's are talking about this amazing roller coaster that is about to close, a ride that all 'true' Wonderbolts go on. Why is it about to close? Oh that's never answered... yes, it is never answered. It is an extremely popular ride that is renowned but for some bloody reason it is being closed. Episode, writers, if you are going to hype something up that it is about to close this isn't how you do it. At least answer why. Saying nothing makes this episode's entire conflict feel 'eh'. Which is sort of does.
So Rainbow wants to ride and eventually tries to talk Applejack into covering her classes for her. Why didn't she ask Twilight? I'm sure Twilight can get someone to cover for her classes. Maybe Twilight Sparkle shouldn't forced all of her friends to be teachers even though they have other things on their plates. Did you think of that sparkle flank?!!! Anyways, Applejack agrees to let Rainbow go in Big Mac's place... I guess we won't be getting a Rainbow and Big Mac episode then... To look over the Grannies as her condition. Rainbow agrees.
So Applejack gives Rainbow a list about what she needs to do and warns her that the Grannies can't do anything on that list or else she can't go on the ride... Well looks like Applejack is still overly protective of her family. One would think she'd have learned her lesson about lists and over complications when it comes to family but I guess she's still hardheaded. Not out of character, but the set up for the conflict feels... as forced as an amazing roller coaster closing for no reason.
So they go and Rainbow tries to get them to stay in bed. They don't and leave behind her back after 'pretending' to go to sleep. Rainbow goes to the ride, gets a ticket and then realizes that the line is so long... Geez, what did you think was going to happen RD? It's a famous ride that is about to close. Of course it is going to be so long. Makes me wonder why they would close it if it is bringing in so much money into the place but hey, maybe it wasn't that famous since RD hadn't heard of it and this is all a publicity stunt and it'll be opened in a month. The place is owned by the Flim Flam brothers. I wouldn't put it past them but this is all speculation. Since the episode didn't state the reason, I'm let frustrated.
So she goes back to the room after some forced dialogue from a random character about responsibility. She finds the Grannies have left and are doing horseshoes, dancing, and eating. Every time she seems like she is enjoying herself, then Rainbow remembers Applejack's list and words by creepy visual gag. You know, it only made me laugh once at the end with how tired Applejack seemed.... I honestly found The Maud Couples joke on the floating heads ten times funnier though.
After messing up Trixie's dad's performance, which yes her father is in this episode, the Grannies get angry at Rainbow. Rainbow apologizes and reveals that she was just trying to follow Applejack's list. To which the Grannies forgive her for it. Then they go on the ride since the Grannies are part of one of the biggest clubs at the place and have a fun time.
Then the episode ends with Rainbow apologizing again and joins their group.
You know what bugs me about this ending, besides the fact that the Grannies would have shot this whole thing down if Rainbow ever mentioned the list. It is the fact that Rainbow is the one that has to apologize. Why? She would have likely just gone on the ride with or without the Grannies and let them do what they wanted if she hadn't had AJ's list. AJ was the overprotective one that gave Rainbow the list and explicitly told her if she doesn't follow the list she can't get on the ride. I know the episode didn't have enough runtime for AJ to apologize, but Rainbow wasn't in the wrong for being put into this situation by AJ in the first place.
Overall, I find this a 'meh' episode. Last week's episode was more frustrating, but it at least had a number of funny lines and jokes that made it worth it. Aside from one laugh, I found myself sort of bored. The Maud Couple is still the standout episode for me this season as I overly enjoyed that episode even if it wasn't the best Maud episode thus far.
I really hope I find myself enjoying episodes down the line more so then the first few. I mean, come on. What's next week's episode.... A CMC episode.... well I mean... I've enjoyed a few CMC episodes.... oh boy.
I hope you all had a better time with it then I did.
