    Episode Re-Review: Triple Threat

Now it's back to FiM, and back to Season 7. Season 7 finally seemed to find its footing at the very end of its first half, with the back to back successes of "Discordant Harmony" and "The Perfect Pear". The same could not be said for Equestria Girls, which debuted three specials meant to be combined into a full length movie, but only one of which ("Movie Magic") was any good. Still, Hasbro bit

Special Re-Review: Equestria Girls: Mirror Magic (Magical Movie Night, Part 3)

So it is that we come to the third and final act of this special, and what at the very least counts as the black sheep of the lot in the form of "Mirror Magic". Compared to the two previous specials, this one directly focuses on its villain, albeit one we've seen before. But hey, Queen Chrysalis' big return in "To Where and Back Again" seemed to be received quite well all things considered. And

Special Re-Review: Equestria Girls: Movie Magic (Magical Movie Night, Part 2)

Despite this and "Dance Magic" and "Mirror Magic" being made part of the same story, different writers penned all three specials. This one was written by Noelle Benvenuti, who had been absent from the writing scene since the lackluster "Made in Manehattan" that we now know was changed from its original planned story involving Flim and Flam. A shame, rather. But more likely, real world problems

Special Re-Review: Equestria Girls: Dance Magic (Magical Movie Night, Part 1)

I'm going by release date for the specials I didn't cover during my initial re-reviews back in 2021, even though we now know when some of the specials are actually supposed to take place. In any case, this special is one of three that, when combined together, equals the total run time of a full length Equestria Girls movie. From here on out, Hasbro would not greenlight another movie, but after

Ranking The Movie Songs · 4:14pm Apr 8th, 2018

We covered the characters, now it's time to cover the songs of the movie. I will not be counting the ponyfication of "We Got The Beat", because it's not an original song composed for the movie (and in my opinion it's a pretty lazy way to open the movie, what would've been wrong with an instrumental opening?). That means there's a total of seven songs to count. And obviously, the rankings are a reflection of my personal opinion. So don't get upset if a song you really liked is low on the list, or a song you didn't like is really high on the list.

7. Rainbow
Why it's on the bottom: Of the two pop songs for the credits, this one is definitely the weaker of the two. It's more obviously auto-tuned, and while Sia sings it well, the lyrics are really weird and questionable. I get that the rainbow is supposed to symbolic, but it doesn't make a whole ton of sense in universe for this song to be performed on stage, when the concert is taking place at night.

6. We Got This
Why it's second to last: Aside from the hook, there's not much to this song. It's a nice pep talk montage, and it's good at what it needs to be. But I don't think anyone's gonna really be humming this song anytime soon. In fact, it's probably better remembered for shoe-horning in cameos of Sassy Saddles, Coco Pommel, Fashion Plates, Photo Finish, Cheese Sandwich, Trixie, Starlight Glimmer, and Twilight's Canterlot friends. Of the cameos, the only one that really warranted being there, was Starlight and Trixie's, considering they've kind of become important to the show in recent seasons.

5. Time to Be Awesome
Why it's low: While I appreciate them giving Ashliegh Ball a chance to get a solo song she's long been denied in the show (it seems like the closest we're ever going to get is "I'll Fly"), this doesn't show off her singing skills nearly as well as it should. Heck, Captain Celaeno singing ends up overshadowing Rainbow Dash's singing, even when the two duet. And it feels a little contrived that one song can just convince the pirates to go back to their roots and defy the Storm King, though that's more because they don't elaborate on what leverage (if any) the Storm King has on them. It feels like this song wanted to be something grander, but for time constraints it got cut down.

4. Off To See the World
Why it's in the middle: At least this pop song has a catchy beat and feels like something that could exist in universe. I can see why the trailers opted to use this song to drum up interest. Though, is it just me, or do the opening beats feel like they were all but lifted from "Eye of the Tiger" by Survivor? Quite frankly, it would've been better to switch the order of this song and "Rainbow", because this feels like a song that Songbird Serenade would actually perform, whereas "Rainbow" feels like a more upbeat and happy (but subdued) song that fits the credits.

3. I'm The Friend You Need
Why it's in the top three: Now we're getting into the good stuff! Capper's character song (more or less) is quite a catchy song with some great lyrics and fitting visuals. A lot of effort was put into it and it really shows. Admittedly, this song is as subtle as a brick to the face when it comes to the twist about Capper's intentions. We all know that in movies, whenever someone is trying to paint themselves as this perfect friend, they're actually planning to stab you in the back at some point. And at least one person mentioned that this song feels like it's trying to be like "You Ain't Never Had A Friend Like Me" from Aladdin, which I can definitely see hints of inspiration from. And while we're on the subject of Disney inspiration...

2. One Small Thing
Why it's not on the top: I think the basic idea behind this song, at least for the planning stage, was "Under The Sea" from The Little Mermaid meets My Little Pony. Of the songs in the movie, this one is the most visually appealing. The animators clearly put their heart and soul into coming up with the most astonishing visuals possible, it's a sign of how great Toon Boom can be, even if for this movie I felt it didn't quite mesh well with the established world of ponies (it takes away their uniqueness and makes them look more genericly cartoony, which robs the movie of its identity even in a day and age where traditional animation in cinema is all but dead). Plus, it's been a long time since we had a Shannon Chan-Kent song, and she hasn't lost her touch. But as great as this song is, there's a bit of mood whiplash to it when you know that as it's going on, Twilight is about to get caught trying to steal the Pearl of Transformation. She had no way of knowing Queen Novo would be won over by the song, but it's still a severe mood whiplash.

1. Open Up Your Eyes
Why it's number one: It's a really powerful and moving song, definitely channeling villain songs of the past. Tempest's delivery is excellent, and there's definitely a case to be made with the implications of "Give up your sweet, fantasy land.". Even back when I first saw the movie, I knew it was going to come down to this and "One Small Thing" for the best song in the movie, and in my mind there was no contest as to which was better. I already talked about how the visuals needed some work, but The Firey Joker mentioned in his review of the movie, that the lyrics of this song get repetitive and feel like they were run through a thesaurus. They all boil down to the same basic concept: I was blind, I was childish (naive, shielded). And of course, Tempest's backstory is a slightly stronger version of Starlight Glimmer's, but that really isn't saying much when the former's backstory was atrocious (it's taken until now for us to even learn the details about her parents, even though they were supposed to be mentioned in 'The Cutie Re-Mark" and "The Crystalling"). All the same, these faults are not enough to deny this song the number one spot.

And there you have it. Come back tomorrow, when we'll update the Reformations Ranking, to include not only Tempest but also human Trixie and Wallflower Blush.

Here's how I personally rank the songs (and I love them all):
1. Open Up Your Eyes
2. I'm the Friend You Need
3. Time to Be Awesome
4. We Got This
5. Rainbow
6. Ponies Got the Beat
7. Off to See the World
8. One Small Thing

Good lineup.

I've yet to see the movie, and "Rainbow" hasn't really captured me as much as the advertising hype tells me it should have.

However Aurelleah's remix of Time to be Awesome" has a good pop feel to it.

I haven't heard the original.

Honestly, I think Rainbow was just put in to cash in on Zootopia, and to have another celebrity cameo. Seriously, the Sia Pony could have been removed from the film and absolutely nothing would have changed. If they really wanted another celebrity, why not just bring back Lena Hall?
