S8 Ep3 "Maud Couple" Thoughts · 6:47pm Mar 31st, 2018
Second time in a row I can give you my thoughts on the newest MLP episode.
First up, SWEET CELESTIA! A new intro! Still the same tune, but someone went crazy with the visuals.
The episode itself was... alright. There were some good jokes and smiling Maud is the most adorable thing I've seen on the show.
Marble and Limestone also returned. Their time was short, but filled with character by both Pie-sisters. Marble's looks convey more than 1000 words. And Limestone's reaction "I don't need a boyfriend."
Speaking of boyfriends... *sigh* Mudbriar... He's supposed to be a male version of Maud, but he fails spectacularly in capturing what makes Maud such a beloved character. He's just an annoying jerk. If even Pinkie finds you insufferable than you are clearly doing something wrong. Many already compared him to Sheldon Cooper and the comparison fits perfectly.
But let's focus on the important part of the episode. Starlight has two pictures of Trixie hanging in her room... And one of them is clearly anthro!
Yes, smiling Maud melts my heart and is still in character. And I was pleasantly surprised with Marble and Limestone, I wish they were involved in stories more. I'd rather see a story with Limestone getting a boyfriend.
As for Mudbriar, yeah, not a fan, but I don't hate him. Keep in mind that this episode is almost 100% from Pinkie's perspective, we never see how he acts without her. Maybe he's a better character when they're alone, or maybe we're just too attached to Maud to accept anyone stealing her from us. I was okay with Sugar Belle and Macintosh because we've met her before, she helped during the season 5 premiere and she's super adorable.
If anything, I was hoping Maud would be paired with someone opposite to her. Someone more like... Pinkie Pie? How's THAT for a sister complex?

Yeah, this episode obviously proved that the Pie sisters have enough potential for their own episodes.
But even if Mudbriar's nicer when Pinkie's gone, it's the episodes fault for not showing us this other perspective to change our view of him. As it stands we only know him from this perspective, where he constantly either corrected Pinkie's speech in the most obnoxious ways or just ignored her. Not to mention as Maud's boyfriend he was was supposed to put in at least as much effort into getting along with Pinkie (obviously Maud's closest family member) as she did with him, but he did literally nothing. There's a reason his cutie mark is a literal stick in the mud.
Man, this felt much better than being forced to defend Chancellor Neighsay last week
Also I've seen people predicting Cheese Sandwich would be Maud's boyfriend, so that would have been interesting

The good news is, if the new season aims for authenticity, they'll break up in the middle and she'll
hook up with Trixiefind someone better
