I am super trashed and I had a great Passover night, so here’s my brother’s Doctoral thesis · 1:41am Mar 31st, 2018

The title is “THE LEIBNIZ FORMULA FOR DIVIDED DIFFERENCE OPERATORS ASSOCIATED TO KAC-MOODY ROOT SYSTEMS”.

If you’re interested in that sort of thing, here it is.

My brother’s Doctoral thesis.

I’ll let him know how people respond, if anyone does.

I'm going to need Numberphile to explain this to me <.<

Wow. That's... some serious maths.

*looks up cohomology*

Hrm! The more you know?

It was good at points. I found the protagonist compelling, and easy relatable. Your brother's prose style is also sublime, saying in a sentence what others might take a page to convey. Overall, he was faultless there.

However, there were significant problems with the pacing and the plot. The central conflict is introduced immediately in the first page:

As in most enumerative problems it would be preferable to have a general algorithm for counting the configurations without having to actually find them all.

This gives us no time to immerse ourselves in the world and to 'get a feel', so to speak, for the story. Although the protagonist was incredibly well-written, it took a while to fully get going and for us to really 'connect' with them. Moreover, although the characterisation of the protagonist was good, the development of the antagonist left much to be desired. Their motives are never fully fleshed out, perhaps leaving us with more questions than answers. Although a mysterious villain can sometimes be effective (for example, Iago in Othello), here it just came across as frustrating. It left me wanting much more than I was given,

Overall, I'd give it 7/10. Definitely not bad, and I would recommend it to someone who had the time to invest. However, there were many areas where improvement is not only possible, but desired. Therefore, I cannot afford it a higher rating.

I hope I was able to help!

Man, Math theses are dense. I didn't know you could fit that much math into 31 double-spaced pages.

Also, congrats to your brother on making it through the PhD program! Definitely something to celebrate.

I'm downloading for later review. I'll send my thoughts when sober.

Hey, I have a bachelor's degree in math. I understood the title up until the KAC-Moody part.

... really? Are we on the same planet? If it doesn't have lesbians, it doesn't pass.

I like that the word "appetizing" is in a mathematics paper.

You say that as though it isn't obvious that Formula-chan has a crush on Cohomology-Ring-sempai. :rainbowwild:
