Babscon (and Tarot) · 7:28pm Mar 29th, 2018

I had hoped to have enough time before Babscon to write up the story of why I've vanished the last few weeks (tl;dr family medical issues), but I've been playing catch-up pretty hard and suddenly convention weekend is here and I'm scrambling to pack. So I'm going to defer the "how is Horizon doing" post for a bit longer (perhaps tonight, if I get the chance). In the meantime, here's what's about to happen!

I'm headed to the convention for the weekend! If you've been following me a while you've probably heard of my ever-more-infamous Drunken Pony Tarot Readings, and cons are prime DPTR time. Convention days are mostly going to revolve around lazy socialization — hitting panels and playing board games and heading out to offsite meals with fellow fanfic authors — and then once night hits and the room parties open up and alcoholic libations begin flowing, I'll pull out the ol' cards and put on my brand new "trust me on this!" Tarot badge [1] and all serious inquiries are first come, first serve.

People physically at the convention get priority because it's a lot easier that way, but if there's a lull, I might do some brief online readings via the drunkwriting Discord server.

Traditionally I've done readings with ChocolatePony's MLP Tarot deck — often with a four-card Equestrian spread that was taught to me by Princess Luna herself (a long story whose short version is exactly that) — but in the last few months I've started to branch out into an even more irreverent form of cartomancy: shuffling together the three decks of a Twilight Sparkle's Secret Shipfic Folder game and using that as the divination source. So far it has worked disturbingly well, both for romantic and non-romantic questions. I should also have another couple of decks on me if you want something less flavored by MLP's core symbolism — the Shadowrun Sixth World Tarot is super freaking gorgeous and super gritty and hashtag-2018; I've got a traditional Rider-Waite-Smith if you want more of a patina of seriousness on your divination; the Mary-El Tarot is ridiculously arthouse; and Egypt Urnash's Silicon Dawn Tarot is a highly transhuman base which adds several fascinating elements to core Tarot (like a Void card, multiple Fools, and the 99 of each suit). My familiarity with those last two is a little variable so you get the extra fun of watching me bullshit through readings more than usual. :rainbowwild:

[1] "The Hierophant" is a Major Arcana card representing, among other things, a spiritual authority. When a card is reversed (upside down), the meaning of the card is traditionally inverted or perverted in some fashion.

Hope to see you there, dude!

I do love how the 99 of Swords converges on a girl with a red balloon.

Have fun with the readings!

One a’these days you gotta get out to the Midwest cons. I might pass on a reading but I’d buy y’a drink in a heartbeat!

Hope to see you there! I'm only going to be present Saturday (and likely not into the evening), so chances are slim…

Drop me a line when you get onsite! If you need my phone number to text me, PM me.

hope it was a good con!

inspired by your tarot readings, I started Fooling around with the Silicon Dawn Tarot. sometimes I can make interesting readings, just for myself. however, some of the card imagery is far too futuristic for my brain to process, so I should probably get something else :twilightsheepish:

if we get to meet up again, I want to show you an interesting thing I found. I think it could possibly be used as a faux-tarot, like your TSSSF technique. but it has such strange and unique properties, that it's been a tricky challenge for me to extract order out of it.

Yeah, as much as I love the Silicon Dawn, it's got a lot to wrap your head around.

I'll look forward to comparing notes on the other thing! Hit me on Discord some time if you want to chat about it via internet.
