Time to address the elephant in the room, that being the things that were set up in the Season 8 opener. If you haven't watched it yet what I have to say will be kind of spoilery.
Without giving away how it ends, season 8 starts out with Twilight building, and opening her own school. Now instead of getting qualified teachers Twilight ropes her friends into being the teachers. After all, it's a school of friendship, and who better then her friends to help teach about friendship. Naturally it's a disaster, but that's part one. It gets better in part two, but lets face it, we got plot holes big enough to fly the Red Dwarf thru them.
Lets start with Apple Jack. Apple Jack has a farm to take care of. That means her family has to take up the slack while she is teaching, and we are not talking part time. This isn't like taking off on an adventure. Being a farmer is a full time occupation, and so is being a teacher. Is AJ going to teach, and do all her chores at the same time? Heck, it's fantasy to begin with so why not.
Next lets talk about Rarity. Rarity has a business to run, shops to manage, new designs to create, and make. Is she going to delegate all that while she teaches? Or is she going to somehow manage both? How long can Rarity burn the candle at both ends? Oh, and if someone does a fan fic on this I'd love to read it.
Fluttershy has a sanctuary to manage, though I suppose that in MLP the animal sanctuary is more or less self maintained, but she does still have a fair number of animals she needs to take care of. If she can manage all that, they have at least established that she is capable of being a qualified teacher. After all, she can translate old ponish.
Rainbow Dash is, or at least was, a Wonderbolt! One does not simply give up the dream of a lifetime to go teach. Was being a Wonderbolt getting to be too much, or did Dash decide teaching was her true calling? Maintaining the edge to be in a high profile athletic organization that does air shows, and is also Equestria's version of Special Ops, doesn't leave a lot of time to go take a teaching job on the side.
Pinkie... Party planner for Ponyville. OK, maybe she does have time to be a teacher... question is, how many parties does she plan, and that's birthdays, and anniversaries for every pony in town, plus welcome parties for all the new comers, and any other excuse for a party we can think of. Heck, it's Pinkie, she has so much energy we could have her do all that and power Manehatten from the extra energy.
Twilight is of course 100% suitable to being a teacher. She has the education, and the time, barring the occasional mission of the friendship map, and occasional world shattering disaster only she seems able to solve.
What all this means to my ongoing fan fic... probably nothing. I did set my story post season seven, and I was intentionally vague concerning what is going on in Equestria, and what the characters are doing with their lives. I can still include the school in my fiction, but I've a mind to more or less ignore it till I see what is going on with the rest of season eight. Not that I won't snipe at it now and then. Lets face it, the season eight opener looked like, or at least to me, like a partial reboot starting from the movie where everything that happened prior to the movie was more or less ignored. Naturally when I started I wanted to be able to incorporate whatever the franchise throws at us. It never occurred to me they'd throw bad fan fiction at us. After all, is it too much to ask that what they write doesn't conflict with the previously set canon? How much of season eight gets included into my fan fic is going to depend a great deal on what they do in the show. If I just can't make it fit into my AU, then I'm just going to say it didn't happen.
