Season 8 Premier Wasn't That Bad · 7:49pm Mar 25th, 2018
The Season 8 premier, I just watched it this afternoon and it was great. I love the idea of a friendship school as well as the new characters, especially the students especially Silver Stream and Yona. The EEA was interesting and extrememly racist, especially their head chancelor. Seeing that part with Celestia at the beginning was also nice. Also, the possibility of the species getting along could lead to war is fascinating, again Celestia's line on this point was good. All around great episodes and definitely can't wait for the rest of the season.

They even brought in Ember, Prince Rutherford, a Hippogryph emissary, Thorax and Gilda's grandpa Gruff for the adult representatives of each of these characters.

My favorite new characters were Silverstream and Ocellus. (My opinions aren't very popular but hearing two other people say they liked Silverstream makes me more comfortable saying it) Gallus, Smolder, and Yona were fun in their own way, though Gallus didn't have much personality. Sandbar seems more generic, but for some reason he's the most popular.
I think the new writers just needed a little demonstration from a veteran writer to start writing interesting episodes. (They must have seen the movie since they're doing huge references to it, like explaining Tempest's absence in that she's spreading word of the Storm King's demise. On that note I was a little concerned they'd treat the movie as non-canon, but now it's confirmed canon)
Notable for being the first two-parter to feature an antagonist that's more of a "jerk" than a true villain, like Svengallop, Gladmane, Spoiled Rich, especially Zesty Gourmand. I wonder if Celestia will have Neighsay removed from his position as chancellor for his blatant racism towards Equestria's allies and nearly starting a war. (I'll put that in my headcanon if he doesn't return)
My only complaint about the episode: The way Ember was portrayed. Here she's more violent and aggressive (she was less so even BEFORE becoming friends with Spike), being mean to her friend Thorax (I hope they reconciled after the big event), and even after the war was averted, her grouchy comment about the song (unless she was just being tsundere). This isn't the Ember we knew and loved in Seasons 6 and 7.

I rather like Silver Stream. She reminds me of Princess Skystar from the movie.
It was actually pretty good! I loved how they learned about friendship in practice rather than theory
