Twilight Has A Word with Nurse Redheart · 7:05am Feb 23rd, 2018

“Good morning, Princess!” Nurse Redheart said, walking into Ponyville General’s examination room #32. Twilight Sparkle was there, already seated on the examination table with her legs folded.

“Good morning, Nurse Redheart,” Twilight replied, chipper and friendly. “How are you doing?”

“Oh, fine. It’s a light day.” She took her own seat across from Twilight. “Lots of scraped knees and the occasional hypochondriac but nothing major so far.”

“Well I’m glad to hear that.” Twilight perked her ears. “You know. Under the circumstances. Actually, it seems like when you’re having a good day a lot of ponies are having a good day.”

“I’ve usually heard it put the other way around, but, yes.” Nurse Redheart gave a polite chuckle. “Speaking of, how are you doing, Princess?”

“Please, call me Twilight. And, fine. Nothing serious.” She circled a hoof in the air. “I’ve just been having an odd problem now and again that doesn’t seem to be going away. It’s not really a big deal, but ponies tell me I should see a doctor, and, well. Here I am!”

“Certainly.” Redheart picked up a medical clipboard in her hooves and a pen in her teeth. Rolling the pen around to the corner of her jaw, she mouthed: “Well, how about you tell me what’s going on. I’ll get some notes down, and then we can get the doctor in here to see you.”

“Sure.” Twilight nodded, waiting a moment for Redheart to get ready to write. “It’s just, sometimes, I scream.”

Redheart paused. She moved the pen back to the corner of her mouth. “I’m sorry, repeat that? Icecream?”

“No. I scream. Like, screaming.”

“You…” Redheart gestured at Twilight with a hoof. “Scream. When you’re injured? Or surprised?”

“No, I think screaming when you’re injured is normal.” Twilight shrugged. “I mean, nothing prompts it. I’ll be having a normal day and then I’ll just scream.”

“Like an angry sound? Like, ‘Grrr! Arrgh!’”

“No, that’s shouting. I don’t have tourettes or anything. I mean screaming. Like, ‘Oh, my leg has just been crushed under a boulder’ screaming.” Twilight paused. “And sometimes when I’m up late the sound wakes up Spike. So I’d like it to stop.”

“Well, uh… of course.” Redheart wrote quickly. “So this happens spontaneously? You’ll be walking along and just, boom? No reason?”

“Yes, that’s correct.”

Redheart’s pen continued to scribble. “Does it ever happen in public?”

“No. It’s not that I can’t stop. Like if I was screaming and somepony walked into the room I’d go back to normal. And probably be pretty embarrassed!” Twilight added a little kick of humor to the end of the sentence.

“So you can stop at any time?” Redheart waited for Twilight to nod. “But it happens anyway?”

“Yeah. It’s not that I physically don’t control my body. I don’t have to scream. But I do. Kind of a lot. So I go somewhere private when the urge strikes. But you know, sometimes ponies stumble in on me. Or it wakes Spike up. I mentioned that part, right?”

“So you sometimes have an urge. And as far as you can tell, nothing causes it.” Redheart glanced at Twilight, and once again Twilight nodded. “Do you ever make any other sounds?”

“Sometimes I cry. Or sometimes both happen at once.”

Redheart stopped writing. She tapped the side of her clipboard with her pen. “So you’ll be… walking along. And you’ll have the urge to scream and cry.”

“I already said that, yes.” Twilight frowned and flicked her tail. “That’s the third time you’ve asked that question.”

“And how do you uh…” Redheart tapped the side of her clipboard again. She shifted her hooves beneath her. “Feel when that happens? Emotionally?”

“Fine.”

“That’s it?” Redheart licked her lips and made herself match Twilight’s eyes. “You feel fine?”

“Yeah, I feel fine. Do you have pills that can make this go away or something?”

“Twilight…” Redheart let out a breath. “That sounds like major depression. It—”

“No, that’s dumb. I feel fine.” Twilight waved a hoof into the air, and gave a stiff shrug of her shoulders. “I was thinking I might be possessed. You know! I’m sometimes spontaneously channeling an evil spirit. Which isn’t a medical issue of course. I’m only here because Spike keeps bugging me. Did I mention it sometimes wakes him up?”

“Yes. Um… yes.” Redheart made a few notes on her pad. “Twilight, I’d like to ask you one last question if that’s alright. Then I can go get the doctor.”

“Sure.”

Nurse Redheart cleared her throat. “Are you screaming because you’re in pain?”

Twilight stared at Redheart. She blinked once. Then again. She licked her lips and swallowed as the silence hung. “You know,” she said, “the more I think about it, the more that possession theory makes sense. I’m going to go pour a circle of salt around my bed and see a wizard about an exorcism. I’m sure I’ll clear right up. Thanks for your help! Have a nice day.”

“Twilight, wait! You—”

There was a purple flash, and Nurse Redheart was alone in the examination room.

I really want to know how this ends.

It doesn't need to... but it should

#depression awareness

Uh, is there anything you'd like to talk about? As random internet strangers, you can tell us anything.

Sometimes on my ride home from work, I scream as loud as I can. I've done it sometimes to where I almost can't talk after. People sometimes look at me as I ride by; the motorcycle helmet doesn't keep all the sound in... Sometimes I think I might need to find a new job, if only because I might pass out on my bike one of these days.

"screaming and sompony walked into"
"screaming and somepony walked into"?

You alright at the moment? I'm guessing personal experience informed this, but current experience, or just in the past coupled with some inspiration to write? Aught we can do? Good luck, either way.

I do this sometimes, usually when driving the urge will hit me. I did this today actually.

If you ever need to talk I'm available. PM me fory email address.

It doesn't end. The screaming will never end.

Depends on if she is actually immortal. Death ends most things.

4803715
Death ends all things, except the screams.

Ah. Lovecraft logic. Then yeah, screams forever.

Jesus Christ can help

I hope you know I am extremely disappointed this didn’t end in a feghoot.

Here's hoping this isn't currently autobiographical. Hugs to you.
