Today was the debut of an Equestria Girls special, "Forgotten Friendship", in which the Humane Six have somehow forgotten everything good that Sunset Shimmer has ever done. Sunset, not sure what was going on, asks Princess Twilight if they were still friends and if she was nice. Twilight affirms this, and Sunset travels to Equestria. Twilight tells her that there's one pony who would know. Sunset asks who, and then makes a realization.
As soon as she said that, I asked myself, "Are they doing it? Are they having a reunion?" Sure enough, Twilight and Sunset are going to Canterlot, and inside the castle.
I was practically shaking in my seat with antici
pation with what I was sure was going to happen. Sunset is visibly nervous, but pulls it together long enough to give a genuine response that you can tell she's rehearsed, much like the apology Gideon Gray gave to Judy Hopps. Princess Celestia doesn't answer right away, and it is freaking intense. She then smiles and says, "I've missed you, Sunset Shimmer" and hugs her.
Princess Twilight has a huge smile and actually squees, and every brony reacts the same. Or at least I did.
This is a moment we've been waiting for since Rainbow Rocks, and the staff pulled it off perfectly! This is Sunset at her most honest and most humble. This is Celestia at her best, encompassing her forgiveness, her compassion, and her love. And her trollish nature. Can't forget that.
Honestly, the rest of the episode doesn't live up to that moment. Don't get me wrong; the whole episode is very well written. Character motivations, the plot, the humor, the fanservice that isn't just there to appease us but actually has a good (or at least good enough) reason to be there. But for me, whose admiration for her and whose love for the way she's written and performed has only grown with each new installment, this was the best thing the staff could have done with Sunset at this time.
Sunset's reunion with Celestia has been a long time coming. She was able to return after Rainbow Rocks, but was both too nervous to and needed to prove to herself and to everyone else that she was ready too. She needed to go back to Equestria for a few minutes in "Mirror Magic" before going for an extended period of time. The most important thing, though, is that they didn't wait too much longer to do this scene. If they had, then it would have seemed out of place, kind of like how a lot of people describe the recent film as something that would fit better a few years ago.
This episode, "The Perfect Pear", and "Shadow Play", have me convinced that the staff love the show as much as we do and know how to include situations the fans have been wanting for years and surpassing our expectations. I wholeheartedly believe that season 7 is the best season, and this episode of Equestria Girls the best of EQG.
Yep. Was good.
