Fic recs, April 22nd: Jordan179 edition

Once again, though a good bit late, I bring it upon myself to memorialize an author via reviews of their stories. Though this time, it's different, as I had no connection to Jordan179 and only learned of his passing (three years ago this month, coincidentally), from this post

Another post about video games and Youtube and stuff

If I'm going to waste time watching shit on Youtube, the least I can do is tell people about it. :P

Ceave is a crazy Austrian with a love of video games and a head for philosophizing about them. Plus he really, really hates coins, no matter how tasty they may look.

Do you like video games? How about philosophy?

I like one of those things for sure, but no one combines the two better than a Youtuber named InfernalRamblings, a former professional game developer who now creates hour and a half long video essays about the meanings of video games and how they relate to the world today. Here's a few highlights, since this is now basically my only

Present Perfect vs. Friendship Forgotten · 6:12pm Feb 17th, 2018

Oh my god, you guys.

Holy shit!

Holy shit, you guys.

OH MY GOD

That was awesome! :D That was way more than I expected and everything I could have wanted! I think this is a reward for slogging through all those terrible (and not-so-terrible) summer shorts!

Look, bottom line, if you don't care about Equestria Girls, you still need to watch this (or at least part of it) because there is a ton of Equestrian history to be had. And if you do? Hopefully you are excited as I am right now. :D Discussion below! Also Background Pony is canon now

I want to start with the bad, because there isn't much. They haven't telegraphed a villain this hard since... I dunno. But Wallflower's role was pretty obvious the moment she showed up and people started reacting to her. I mean, other than just being the new face. Maybe it's a problem of formula? Whatever, it's a small strike.

And then there's "Invisible", which was a fucking awesome song that just goddamn stops in the middle D: You don't interfere with a montage, Sunnybun! DX I just wanted to hear the end ;_;

And, okay, I guess they maybe overdid it with "Twilight freaks out about books", but enough of that was funny that I can consider the whole gag neutral at worst. So, not really anything bad about this, then! And the good?

Clover the Clever was male!

Fucking restricted section of the Canterlot Library!

SUNSET RECONCILES WITH CELESTIA HOLY FUCK MY SHIT AND A HALF IN THE BUTT ;_; You better believe the instant they showed the Palace, my mouth was open and my hands were clutched to my face and I did not move from that position for a solid three minutes. Oh my god. It's probably been written more emotionally in fanfiction, but I can't say I dislike how quiet and easy it was. Celestia is the forgiving all-mother of the pony race, you chucklefucks, don't you forget it. ;____;

And Trixie! She's obviously a part of the show now, between the main show and this. But she has a heart. That was amazing. She maybe got one up on Sunset in the morality department for no good reason, but I was really impressed, and now she's friends with Sunset, too. Also, I loved the smoke gag. :D

And that's probably all the really amazing stuff. Though it's worth mentioning Spike's banter with the drone, that was unexpectedly hilarious. :D But yeah, I am so happy with this short -- I might consider it a short movie -- and I'm in the weird spot of finding myself looking more forward to EQG stuff than actual show.

Oh yeah, and let's not forget just randomly superheroing up at the end there. :V What was that, I ask ya.

Oh yeah and I didn't get canon screwed motherfucker what was all that anxiety for D:

I mean I could screw your canon for you if you’d like. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

But seriously yeah that was some good EQG’ing.

ALSO YES WE NEED A FULL VERSION OF THAT SONG NOW

I think a lot of us, for sake of drama, forget that Celestia - much like ol' Jeezy Chreezy - has this whole forgiveness thing that's a part of her character.

The Horse Mother of the Pony race is all-forgiving. :3

She was the last bearer of the Element of Kindness (and Generosity and Magic/Friendship). There's absolutely no reason she wouldn't be forgiving to someone who isn't a threat to her nation and world. +1!

Exactly! Drama is all well and good, but Celestia is the kind of pony goddess figure to live and let live above all else.

Don't forget:

That Versebreakers are canon now, too. :scootangel:

Mike

I called it - Clover was a stallion. And he will marry Princess Platinum. Fo sher, fo sher!

And you’re right, even though I’m not into EQG, I’m glad you brought this to my attention. I really enjoyed it tremendously!

I really hope Horizon posts a blog about this.

Had never planned on watching another EQD thing ever. But... here goes...

Clover the Clever was male!

That's not entirely new: Clover is male in Princess Celestia and the Summer of Royal Waves. I don't think it's been explicitly stated before on screen, though.

Loved it for the most part. A few niggles, but greatly outweighed by the good stuff. It would have been worth it for the Celestia/Sunset reunion alone, but pony!Twilight in the library was fantastic. In the human world, yeah, Trixie was brilliant. "Invisible" wasn't written by Daniel Ingram, which is unusual for a (nearly!) full-length song. The first song was, but good grief its verses scanned poorly. Overall, though, this might be my favourite EqG thing since Rainbow Rocks.

Best since RR indeed! And I haven't read any books since Fluttershy's, because Yayponies apparently just doesn't care about them. :(

Wow! :pinkiehappy:

OK you convinced me! I'll watch the whole thing!

4799503
I did! Pedestria confirmed as Equestria's hazardous magic waste dump! :rainbowlaugh:

Lots of good jokes in this one, and more importantly for me, actual ponies!

I've fallen so hard out of EQG I kind of want to watch just the Sunset/Celestia scene and call it a day... but this whole thing gets rave reviews. Hm.:derpyderp2:

This was the best EQG thing since Rainbow Rocks. The history, the "oh, I put this in a story of mine about EQG and it's canon now!" the restricted section, and, of course, Sunset and Celestia. Man, that was awesome, especially Celestia's Are you saying I was a bad teacher?! joke. That was the best one.

Overall, a few nitpicks, but a very, very good EQG thing.

If you've fallen out, it's worth watching for that scene and the scene in the library after, for the aforementioned Equestrian lore.

So goooooooooooood

Thank you for the rec!

I mean... no one ever took a selfie with Sunset? Facebook pics? No one?

Watched the Celestia scene, and kept watching. Whole thing was good fun - I guess Wallflower gets props for being a different sort of villain, if not one with a particularly sensible motive.

"I've missed you, Sunset Shimmer."

Beautiful.

4798851 And the sorceress he was chasing was an earth pony too, apparently.

This was amazing! So happy about it. Sunset, great. Trixie, hilarious and a wonderful complement to her, and the way she related to Sunset and having her own vision for herself which almost nobody else sees? The best. Wallflower made a strong, appropriate antagonist, and the conflict was one that both felt natural despite its unnatural source and really important. Sunset after losing all her memories was pathetic and heartrending to see in all the right ways. The reunion with Celestia was enjoyable to see and appropriate, though I could have done with less dramatic buildup to it -- one of the areas that was sometimes pulling it a bit down for me was the knowledge that Starlight and Discord are in the background somewhere, and how much better Sunset's redemption/reformation has been, and the comparison of Celestia's reactions to Starlight or Discord throws it in a bad light. But also Luna! Not much content there, but good for some laughs that steal the scene. And the jokes in general were hitting.

Honestly, possibly the best thing in EQG, almost certainly since RR, and one of the highlights of the show in the last year. So good.

ETA: You know what this really felt like? A "Magical Mystery Cure" that I actually think was good. Well, more than good, of course, but you know. Though that was another nitpick: WTF does Twilight mean she's never seen anything like this/whatever before? She's seen basically the same thing, only if anything more severe, at least twice! Anyway, nitpick. :P So anyway, where are Sunset's wings again? :V

So anyway, where are Sunset's wings again? :V

No kidding D:

4800497
Seriously, over those first couple movies I think she had a better arc leading to that than Twilight did over S1-S3, too.

Anyway, there was one other thing I forgot. Luna makes an excellent background pony standing by her sister. I like to imagine from her bearing and expression that she was thinking "This is going to be another friendship thing, isn't it? I miss the days when we had problems you solved by killing a foe on the battlefield, or slitting a throat in the night, or overawing with magic or deceiving into resolving itself with subtle and clever deceptions. This modern era is tedious." :V
