Bubbles' Pokémon Journey - part 2 · 5:43am Feb 7th, 2018

(I have recently started a Pokémon Crystal play through on the 3DS virtual console, this is a retelling of this adventure)

Hi there Pokémon fan! Bubbles here!

Last time I had just made my way to Violet City and was contemplating battling the gym leader! Surprisingly I almost immediately got a call from Bug Catcher Wade telling me he found some berries. I didn't want to pass up a free berry but this is a tad weird.

Oh well.

I checked out the city, got roped into visiting the pointless trainer school (you can learn almost all of that stuff in magazine or from listening to Professor Oak's radio show!), and I explored the surrounding a little. Some tree-shaped Pokémon is blocking the path to the west, there's some ruins to the southwest that I'm not really interested in and some guy to the south won't let me through until I enjoyed Violet City more? Something like that.

The gym leader in town is a Flying -type specialist, which is bad news for me since my team is a Totodile and a Bug -type Pokémon. I figured I could get some training for Naria at the Sprout tower first. She only has Poison Sting as an attack move so she's not exactly a powerhouse. She did learn Scary Face since I caught her and that's actually came in handy whenever I want to pass to Bitey.

So the Sprout Tower is kind of a weird place... you go up a level, then back down, then up and then up again... and it's lousy with Rattatas! Also, it wiggles? But I managed to make it almost to the end before taking a Pokémon Center break. Using Poison Sting over and over is a real drain on Naria's energy, and switching into Bitey isn't a good idea since Bellsprouts come equipped with Vine Whip!

So I make it to the final room and who do I find? EDGE! That little jerk just finished battling the tower master elder guy! He claims again he'll be the best and bounces with an Escape Rope before I have a chance to challenge him. The old man tells me he treats his Pokémon like tools for battle... that poor Chikorita.

Putting that aside I get into a battle with the Elder and beat his two Bellsprouts and his surprise Hoothoot. Again, Naria's Scary Face is useful before I switch in to Bitey to take on the Hoothoot. It didn't have any flying type moves but at least Bitey now has the initiative and some experience. I beat Elder Li and get HM01, FLASH! I also score a free Escape Rope but I decide to pocket it for later. During the Sprout tower trial Naria learned Constrict. It's not any stronger than Poison Sting though, but at least it's a normal type move? It also has a chance to reduce speed apparently, a very slight chance.

Then, just as I finish with the Elder, Wade calls me for ANOTHER berry! Crazy.

Anyway...

Now is the time for a gym battle!!

Despite the disadvantage I forged ahead with Naria! Turns out training at Sprout tower made my team way stronger than what the Gym trainers had. Even if one of them has Peck I manage to power through with some poison sting and the occasional assist from Bitey. Bitey's Rage attack can be pretty potent if he gets hit. I think it's better than Scratch.

Falkner is an embarassement to the Johto region, choosing to use Kanto birds instead! Even the Sprout Tower elder had a Hoothoot on his team. Anyway, I managed to get through his first Pokémon with Naria but his Pidgeotto had Gust so after a Scary Face I passed to Bitey and just spammed Rage until it was over. So, long story short: I won! Again, my team was just stronger than Falkner after the training at the tower. I got the Zephy Badge and... the Mud Slap TM? Why is the flying guy handing out TMs for Mud Slap? Why didn't he used it on my Pokémon? Oh well... maybe I'll find a use for it later.

Bitey even managed to learn Water Gun! So now I have some more type coverage and a special attack at that!

Now that jerk south of the city will let me through and I can go on my way to Azalea Town... but wait, I got another phone call! And this time it wasn't that kid Wade, it was Professor Elm. He's done observing the mysterious egg and decides that it needs to be with Pokémon to hatch so he wants me to lug it around until then. I agree to help him out and I went to meet his assistant at the Pokémon Center. I took this opportunity to get Twig out of the PC and teach him Flash. I heard I'm gonna need it.

I take a moment to go check out the Dark Cave and find a potion, and too many Zubats for my taste. I also stubbed my toe on a Geodude.

And with that I'm off on the next leg of my journey! I think my team needs another member to cover more types... I wonder who else I could add?

Find out next time Pokémon fans!

Mud Slap saved my butt once, Bubbles. Don't knock it!

I'm not, I'm just questioning why the Flying type specialist is the one handing it over.
