Story Notes: The Trouble with Unicorns · 1:14pm Feb 4th, 2018

For sportsball fans, today is one of the biggest days of the year: Super Bowl Sunday! A chance to hang out with friends and watch the big game, and of course the commercials.

I figured I ought to do something to memorialize the occasion, so here we go!

First, a big thanks to my pre-readers: metallusionismagic, MSPiper, and AShadowOfCygnus!

It's canon that ponies like American football, and that some of them are Colts fans:

Baron Realization is, according to research I did in the past, one of the Budweiser Clydesdales. Sadly, the link is now dead, and any other sources I can find don't list him. Because he's in Equestria.

I think that it was Shachza that first mentioned Air Secretariats.

Ponies would love Slap Chops, and to be honest, the apple-quartering thing that AJ uses in one episode is like an early Slap Chop.

Draper Price is, of course, an incarnation of the ad agencies in Mad Men.

Ponies can't operate automobiles is a reference to a fan video. Also, appropriately enough, the last story I published was about a pony operating an automobile.

All of the various football players are currently members of their respective teams. I can't say if they still will be in 2019, because I don't have a crystal ball.

Likewise, I can't promise that the Super Bowl LIII lineup will be Colts vs. Broncos, but if it is . . . any of y'all who bet on sports owe me money. Just sayin'.

Is Nickelback's music up to par with the requirements of the genre? That argument may never be settled.

Incidentally, I looked for ponified Nickelback. If there's a picture below this, my search was not in vain.

Bright Bridle is in Friends Forever issue 19.

Ant-sized Wiki picture

Cipher Splash is a background unicorn. Nopony in Equestria knows what her cutie mark means (according to her trading card).

There really is a TexMex-A-Que in the Mercedes Benz stadium in Atlanta, and they really do serve nachos. A bargain at $12.99, really.

Edit: it's also worth mention that IRL, the Broncos and Colts could never play each other, since they're both in the AFC. But, the story has an AU tag, so I think we're good. :rainbowlaugh:

I got up, boiled and mashed some potatoes that needed to be used quick with a stick of butter, splash of half and half and plain yogurt and seasoning and kicking back with some Angry Orchard. Not really my cider of choice, but it was what Costco had.

That's right, you sent me this link to preread... Blargle! These past few days have been screwy work-wise and I missed all the little things. Like... telling my friends I'll actually be available for their little superbowl party.

I don't know about the Realization part, but there was a Budweiser Clydesdale named Baron back in the eighties. If it's really bugging you, contact Warm Springs Ranch and ask them.

Noice. Not really a sports guy myself, but hey, why not?

Also, the first and last time I watched the super bowl was when DA BEARS were playing, and they got creamed. So yeah.

I know, right? I thought it was a week from now. Kinda had to scramble to get this story finished.

Yeah, 'cause I typically publish the blog post first, and then submit the story.

At least it's not like the good old days where they had to pass moderation . . . one of my stories took 48 hours to clear.

Hooray for snacks!

Agreed!

For the past couple weeks, publications have been going on about the Twin Cities food scene and how it's the best kept secret of the Midwest.

Well, it's better than Wisconsin's cuisine, at least. Unless you like cheese, that is.

Yesterday, we had a couple inches of snow throughout the day and today, the high is +5 or so. Hardly unusual, but enough for the out-of-towners to complain and think people who live here are nutzo.

People who live in the south don't understand the frozen north in general. Some of them even think that bears and wolves roam the city streets.

Computing while drunk? That sounds like either the dumbest idea ever, or the best idea ever. I suppose you'll know which when you turn the thing on. :rainbowlaugh:

No worries! It was super short notice, anyways--the Super Bowl was a week sooner than I expected.

My Super Bowl party was working, so I missed nearly all of the game.

I'm confident in the research I did for Asylum that that is (or was) one of their Clydesdales. Although I suppose I could . . . they'd probably be rather confused as to why I wanted to know. :rainbowlaugh:

The last one I watched in full was the year of the infamous Nip Slip. Whatever year that was.

I don't even remember who was playing.

I also didn't see the halftime show, and didn't hear about the wardrobe malfunction until the next morning, when it was on literally every news station.

Also, the Detroit Lions remain undefeated in Super Bowl history.

Tell them it's about unpaid child support. The eighties were a wild time.
