Signal Boost: Current Contests · 1:49am Feb 1st, 2018

Everfree Northwest's Scribblefest contest just launched! The prompt is Family Trees: Roots, Branches, and Leaves, and rather than selecting an overall best, they offer prizes for winners in six separate categories.

Also, there are a couple of contests coming close to wrapping up, but if you've got this weekend free you can still sneak an entry in under the wire. Aragon's comedy contest (top prize: a blistering $200!!) just added another week and the deadline is now Feb. 9. Manaphy's Wonderbolts contest ends Feb. 10, and the Lunbra group contest's really-for-serious-final deadline is Feb. 7.

If you'd rather stretch your legs with some original fiction, the Writeoff Association has an OF short-story contest going on this weekend (and an art contest based on the stories written!), and prompt selection is happening now. And speaking of the Writeoffs, there's discussion going on right now about the length limits of future minific rounds.

Finally, speaking of Original Fiction, George RR Martin just started a Clarion West scholarship for aspiring SFF writers. It's a heck of a program if you want a jump-start on a genre fiction career. (ETA: There's also one just for FIMFiction authors, overseen by Bad Horse.)

Any other contests I've missed? Plug 'em in comments!

EDIT 2/1: Added in from comments:
Monthly flashfic contest, deadline 2/21, limit 150 words.
• FamousLastWords' cheating contest, first prize $200, deadline 2/28.

And from the list on Bad Dragon's user profile
Magical Familiars contest, deadline 2/12.
eevee123's two random character romance contest, signups through 2/28, deadline 4/28.
MLP: The Movie contest, deadline 2/28.
Deshlune's Action contest, deadline 3/2.
Nailah's two random ponies contest, first prize $30, deadline 3/21.

Hooray I am noticed :D

Thanks for the signal boost, Horizon. I appreciate the generosity!

The monthly Flashfic contest was just put up: Flashfic 150 Febuary 2018: "A Lovely Night, Ruined".

Every month there's a contest to write a fic based on a prompt, in this case "A lovely night, ruined", in 150 words or less by the 21nd of the month. Only prize is picking next months prompt, but it's still fun, and trying to think around 150 words is always interesting.

so many contests @_@

Thank you, I totally forgot about this.

Aww come on, are you serious? I thought I'd missed all the contests, and now that I find out they've been extended I can't decide which one to enter because my idea fits two of them! :raritydespair:

No problem! I didn't end up entering last month, but the prompt was one that no ideas were coming to me. The current one gives me a couple ideas, though. I like prompts with homonyms....

Don't forget FamousLastWords' cheating contest.

The closing date is actually the 21st -- but thank you for the plug all the same!

Oops! Fixed. Not sure why I keep thinking the 22nd.

n.b.: Bad Dragon keeps a listing on their user profile of currently running contests. There's a whole bunch more there, and I've updated the post accordingly.

Thank you! Updated.

4786955 Most contests will let you submit fics that are made for more than one contest at once, fyi. Ask the host if you want to be sure, but you can usually get away with double-dipping (just not submitting things that expressly weren't made for a given contest).

Finally, speaking of Original Fiction,George RR Martin just started a Clarion West scholarship for aspiring SFF writers.

Note that there is also a Clarion fimfiction scholarship just for ponyfic writers!

I knew about the FIMFic one in previous years, but I must have missed the 2018 announcement when I purged my huge notification backlog a month or two back. Thanks for the reminder! Updating the post.
