Miss Koi Finally Reviews "Daring Done?" and "It's The Mane Thing About You" · 4:52am Jan 30th, 2018

Much like “Campfire Tales” and “To Change A Changeling” back to back, we have another MLP lore episode and a slice of life episode [although “To Change A Changeling” episode is a mixture of a subtle plot development episode (due to the fact that it is expanding on the conflict that Thorax has to face as leader and might hint to a future confrontation with Chrysalis) and a slice of life episode] back to back:) Except “Daring Done” has a different approach to explaining the MLP lore and “It’s the Mane Thing About You” is definitely more slice of life than “To Change A Changeling”:) But first, let’s take a look at “Daring Done?”

(Oh my gosh, this comic cover is soooo pretty:3! Especially those Anubis dogs in the back, I hope they exist in Equestria!:D I bet they have some interesting backstory and lore and whatnot:))

Right off the bat, I give this episode 7 hearts out of 10<3 Now, as much as there are cons to this episode as everypony pointed out, I want to point out the pros first because they are there and I feel like they are important to point out first:) And the first big pro that comes to me when it comes to this episode is the Somnambula backstory:) Question though: Is Somnambula an actual Egyptian name or a pony pun on an Egyptian name and such?

I just love how they illustrated and animated this story in the style used during the times of Ancient Egypt, but yet still has time to show the characters of this legend in regular MLP style too. Thus, giving a nice balance between the two and something different from the other lore stories so far <3

It has a nice but simple message of hope, which carried into the episode but I will explain that later in a bit more detail. And it had a narration all the way through unlike the other lore stories, narration provided by the local elderly stallion cause what says a lore story than old man narration, right?:D

Although, it did make me what to hear what the characters in the story actually sound like, like for example Sonnambula and the Sphinx. But at the same time, I can’t help but love the authentic feel to this story telling and that it gives me something to look forward to:) So it’s kinda of a win and lose situation:)

Is it just me or does everyone have the urge to ship these two? Just a little? Or is this just me?

Overall, while the Somnambula story was better than Flash’s and Rockhoof’s story, but it is not as good as Mistmane’s story in my opinion:) Though I like Somnambula’s design better than Mistmane’s young and elderly design, but again that is my opinion;) Another pro to this episode is the main conflict that sets everything in motion: Daring Do having to have the consequences for her actions when saving the day, AKA facing the mistakes and bad things that accidentally happen when she was only trying to do good.

This is an important lesson that all heroes in these stories have to realistically face, if written in well develop and realistic stories. Especially heroes like superheroes in comic books like Iron Man and Indiana Jones and a whole lot more that I can mention:) HOWEVER, the biggest mistake that lead to downfall of this lesson in this episode is letting the other Daring Do villain Caberlon get involved and cause additional problems to the main problem. His presence undermines Daring Do’s big mistake in my opinion, and when her big mistake gets undermined like that, it makes look like it wasn’t a big mistake at all but a simple “misunderstanding”. This is hard to see because not only could we have a good lesson, but we have seen characters like Princess Luna, Sunset Shimmer, and Discord who had to face the consequences for their big mistakes and they had to make up for their big mistakes. Thus, helping these characters to grow and progress and develop.

It also makes it understand for us to see Rainbow and Pinkie defend Daring Do in this episode because the episode makes it seem like they are undermining her big mistake too by pointing out Caberlon’s presence by the end of the episode. With the lesson of the episode falling apart, which made up the spine of this episode, it made the whole episode fall apart in my opinion.

Plus, this episode repeated the word “hope” too much. When it comes to themes about hope, since it is such a cliche but important theme and lesson, it is best to keep it subtle like they did in “Campfire Tales” at least.

Next up, “It’s the Mane Thing About You”!:D Just to keep this simple, this episode gets 8 hearts out of 10 and works better than “Daring Done?” is because of two things: 1) a good lesson support by a strong execution and story, and 2) Rarity’s new punk design <3

I kinda see what the reviewers are talking about when they say that this episode kinda worked backwards to get the story they came up with. The first started with punk design and worked a story around it, but in hindsight, this story is so well written that I don’t even notice this trait about it. What I love about this new punk design are the complimentary colors that goes with Rarity’s purple mane, the outfit that goes with it, but above all else, Rarity’s positive new perspective and ingenuity and confidence that came with it;)

I love how the message of the episode has a new and refreshing and “about time we talk about” kind of lesson:) It isn’t necessarily an episode about inner beauty, but rather confidence is the ultimate quality and finishing touch that makes one beautiful:) Not all the stuff that goes on the outside, but rather your own self love of your outer and inner beauty:) Truly, in my honest opinion, a supply of confidence or lack of confidence has a way and power to mold how people see you. For example, using me as an example for this, a long time ago, when I felt insecure about this one thing about my physical appearance, I would try to hide it as much as I could. But, by hiding it, it highlighted that thing even more to others and people feed on my insecure vibes. It wasn’t until I learned to embrace and love all my insecurities and all that things that make up my physical appearance, and gain more confidence, people not only didn’t notice the thing that made me insecure about my physical appearance, but they saw my beauty even more when I become more confident^^

(I thought this image was appropriate since today is Monday, or at least in my timezone)
The same thing kinda happened to Rarity in this episode. When she lost confidence in herself because of the lost of her mane, ponies around town couldn’t recognize her because she wasn’t acting like her usual confident. It wasn’t because of her chopped up mane, it was because of the lost of her usual confidence, which gives her the charm that she needed in this episode to convince ponies to help her and such as she pointed out in the episode. It wasn’t until she embraced her new insecurity was that she was able to be confident again and have ponies, not only recognize her again, but emphasize how she’s even more beautiful than before:) These are the kinds of lessons we need I swear!:D

Also, why hi Zecora:) Wasn’t expecting to see you in this episode:)

Next Time on Miss Koi Reviews: “A Health of Information” and “Marks and Recreation”

PS Thank you guys for your comments on the last review:) I will definitely make an origin story on how the Koi Fish Pony species came to be^^ I will give you hint about that: Mistmane. That’s all I’m going to say about that;) Mwhaha! Guess away!:D Tehee;) As for reviewing the Pillars of Equestria comics, I think I will review those after I do these Season 7 reviews, after my DOD episode reviews, and after my Season 8 reviews. Or in between when I’m doing the Season 8 reviews, depending on my schedule.

Question though: Do you guys want me to cover all the MLP leaks that have been going on or no? Let me know in the comments down below:)
