MLP Season 5 episode rankings (updated 18th August 2020) · 5:23pm Jan 17th, 2018

0/10 - AWFUL (unsalvageable, nothing to be gained from watching it, never should have been made, wouldn't recommend to anyone, completely butchers an important subject/teaches a horrible and downright toxic moral)
1/10 - HORRIBLE/BORING (tedious to sit through, hurts to watch it, a bore, no reason to watch it, whatever positive things about it are tiny and not enough to save it)
2/10 - VERY BAD (slightly less terrible, maybe it had that one character you liked or one/two jokes you laughed at that kept it from being a 1 but still very painful)
3/10 - BAD (the kind of bad where you're checking your watch over and over to see how much time is left before it finally finishes)
4/10 - MEDIOCRE (not awful but not really that good either)
5/10 - EH (average, didn't love it or hate it but you feel like you could've done something better with your time)
6/10 - DECENT (the first positive rating on this list, fine overall, you wouldn't watch it again but you are glad you saw it once)
7/10 - GOOD (enjoyable enough that you'd maybe watch it again in future, had some noteworthy flaws but is overall a worthwhile sit-through you'd recommend to someone)
8/10 - GREAT (a solid, enjoyable episode, very entertaining)
9/10 - EXCELLENT (very engaging, awesome, you really recommend it to anyone)

Definitely in agreement with you on Amending Fences, although it's pretty closely followed by The Mane Attraction for my favorite S5 episode.

I personally have no issue with Crusaders of the Lost Mark. But that's just me.

Can I ask why you didn't like Do Princesses Dream of Magic Sheep? I thought it was an okay-ish episode.

For the bloody appalling way it handled depression.

Luna was a complete idiot for creating the Tantabus explicitly to punish herself despite knowing it could potentially escape into the real world. This isn't like self-harm with a razor that only affects the person holding it; this is like self-harm with a fucking nuke that puts everyone in danger. And all Twilight and company do is give Luna a speech that's basically "We love you, stop being depressed" which makes Luna's depression instantly go away.

As someone with a friend who suffered from suicidal thoughts years ago, that is NOT how depression works. And how the writers handled it is disgustingly disrespectful. Depression is not a cute personality quirk that's easily dealt with. Depression festers in your brain like a virus and fills you with a feeling of hopelessness and worthlessness. It does not go away simply because someone gives you a cuddle and says "there, there, we still love you". You need proper psychiatric help from a professional doctor, not the Tumblr attitude of "all you need are kind words and a hug through your computer screen to make these problems go away". This isn't a good moral for the kids watching delivered badly, it's a genuinely horrible and toxic moral treated as a good thing.

This is a major problem with MLP these days: what used to be a show about teaching simple lessons about friendship is now trying to address incredibly serious and complicated issues like depression (this episode) and suicide (A Rockhoof and a Hard Place) the same way they address a regular friendship problem.

My friend's okay now but it took a long time and a lot of therapy sessions to help him.

That's good to hear.
