Flash Notion

The hardest part about writing is that nothing you make is ever as good on the page as it was inside your head... but other people don't know that, so we worry over nothing.

    Jinglemas 2022

Hello. Been a while. So I signed up for this thing, as a way to get back to writing. There's still a bit of time left for the .5 of you who bother reading these posts but somehow aren't aware of one of the bigger site-wide events to sign up for it. Happy holidays!

I LIVE!!!! (and so does this thing...)

I'm not here to give another life update. Suffice to say, I've about given up on keeping myself "together". I'll try and get stories out, but I make no promises about when or what or anything.

But, for those who still care:
Beanis is back! Remember the beans? Majin does. Go give him the usual love/hate.

Only a couple hours to go (for me)

    So. 2020 is almost over.

This... certainly has been a year. Lots of bad things happened. Lots of bad things are going to continue happening.

I don't want to dwell on it.

Instead, I'd like to take the time to reflect on some of the good things that I experienced this year. In no particular order.

    Smol Update

December is here, the stores are playing Silver Bells, and this site's Jinglemas 2020 event has officially started.

I've gotten my prompt and made my outline. I just need to buckle down and write the thing.

I may have created a new monster... · 8:15pm Jan 12th, 2018

... and I need someone to draw and/or name it.

(biological descriptions ahead, please be mature)
here's what I've imagined:

the creature is approximately the size of a large dog, with a body that belongs to a maggot; grey and slimey-looking. It has no real legs to speak of, nor does it slither. instead, it's propelled by a million invisibly-tiny spines, like a combination of a sea urchin and a starfish, that coat its entire body.

at one end is a puckered hole, yes like an anus. unlike an anus however, the only thing that comes out is a bunch of tube-tentacles. one of these would be used for reproduction, ejaculating the required cells within foam or fluid. at least one tube would be used for excretion; multiple tubes may be necessary for feces, urine, and natural coolant, ie. sweat. one tube would be able to extend out really far to manipulate objects. another tube would be able to spray a chemical deterrent, similar to a bombardier beetle.

at the other end of the creature is its mouth. its mouth, when open, would be a giant circle of teeth that even a kraken would hate. just... so many teeth. the mouth would not have to be a circle when closed. however, even when shut the teeth would be exposed, as the creature has no lips to speak of. instead, at the base of each tooth would be a little fleshy ball that appears to be an eyeball. This is not an eyeball. it is instead a poison sack filled with the same chemicals that shoot out of the one tube. when an enemy attacks the vulnerable "eyes", the enemy will be hit with boiling, acidic liquid.

the creature's real eyes would be... nowhere. it has no eyes, not in the normal sense. instead, the structures that allow the sensing of light and color would be arranged around the base of each of its "legs", effectively turning the creature's entire body into an eyeball. with 360 degree vision.

three more things about the creature, less visible:

under it's skin are chitinous plates. it doesn't have a skeleton, per se, but the plates support the creature and armor it, and are connected by muscles.

inside even that, the creature has no centralized brain. nerve tissue is spread throughout its body, making it harder to kill.

stem cells are also spread around the body, making it quick to heal. cutting it in half would likely result in two monsters, both now extremely upset at you.

so, what does everyone think of this monster?

Love it; I'd like to see it in action. Link me the story you write it in!
EDIT: I'll call it a cave caterpillar, due to the fact maggots can look like caterpillars and it sounds like it might dwell in the dim light of the entrance of a cave, but not deep in it.

NAME it? Hmm.

Well, if you “discovered” it, then why not name it for yourself (assuming you want to be associated with this thing) and call it “notion’s maggot” or “the flash bear” or something like that. The way you described it (before you got to the tentacle part) is almost like a water bear. So maybe you can get a thing outta that.

As with the drawing, take it up with the “pervertart”, or “deviantart”, as the people who don’t make synonym jokes call it.

Oh, and don’t forget the dog Latin name.
