Numbers are weird.
As anyone who's known me for any decent length of time can attest to, I generally try to stay distant and modest when it comes to self-analysis out of a deeply-ingrained fear of picking up an unwarranted ego, but still tend to obsess over particular and predictably specific things. In this case, numbers. Though honestly, I don't know anyone who doesn't feel a self-indulgent warmth when they see a visualization of their interweb popularity rise. Some do take this more to heart than others; Mindblower keeps a running tally and complains to me bitterly every time one of his stories gets another dislike. I can hardly claim to be a patron saint of aloofness, of course, as I've just spent the past fifteen minutes or so making this unprofessional tally chart for my number of chapter views of Death Note: Equestria.
Vanities aside, it's interesting to see the places where the numbers rise and fall, and to speculate on the elements within the chapters that cause these changes. By keeping track of what works and what doesn't, I can figure out which kinds of chapters people like most and structure future works accordingly. See, I'm not totally crazy after all. Some of these changes are easier to explain than others.The flow-busting lump that is Burial is due to the link on Equestria Daily erroneously connecting directly to that chapter instead of the main page. Inversely, Turncoat is pretty new at the time of writing, so the sudden drop at the end will probably round out over the next couple of weeks.
Based on the first few stats, upwards of a thousand people read or skimmed the first chapter alone before deciding that the story wasn't for them and stopping there. This seems reasonable, slowly shaving down to around 2000 views per chapter over the first season. There's a drop at Vengeance (not sure why nearly 200 people would abruptly stop just before the season finale, but ours not to question why) and another, massive drop afterwards; it turns out people really don't like it when you kill their favorite pony. Strangely, the death of an equally innocent pony two chapters later only seems to stabilize things, leading to an average of around 1400 views per chapter of season 2 so far. The numbers fluctuate a lot more at this point, which I can't account for. Devotion might be worth a second look, but to my knowledge there's no reason why Smolder would have 200 more views than the chapter immediately before it. Coming up to the present, there's a somewhat alarming drop when we get to Sacrifice. Was Darkest really so awful that it caused more than 300 people to quit then and there? Should I stop doing musical episodes? A statistician might be encouraging me at this point to start selling stock and opening the doors for the rats, but I'm sticking with this... because you never know where charts like these will take you next.
