My Thoughts — Skulduggery Pleasant #2 — 'Playing With Fire' · 8:44pm Dec 21st, 2017

I don't have that much to say about Skulduggery this time. Don't get me wrong, it's still good. But it's...

Well, honestly, I was really tempted to just copy my thoughts on #1, and I'm not sure if anybody would have actually noticed. Great action, great snark, creepy villains, too much lame-tastic Valkyrie Cain, not nearly enough awesome title-character skeleton-man.

Honestly felt a bit weird. Been ages since I saw an author produce two works this distinctly 1:1 in both what's great and suck about 'em.

Guess that about sums it up, and why I'm not even bothering with the cover and synopsis this time. I enjoyed Playing With Fire, will no doubt buy the sequel... but I also hope it will be less formulaic, and take a few more risks.

Again, Dresden Light, for both good and ill. Recommended if you're itching for some more urban-fantasy while Jim Butcher isn't writing fast enough :twilightangry2:, but newcomers to the sub-genera should probably look elsewhere first for series with a bit more meat on their bones.

Oh, and since I usually get a few recommendations slash inquiries when I post these, I've recently nabbed a copy of Iron Druid #1, and a relative new & unknown book called 'Dead Things' by Stephen Blackmoore.

Must admit I'm still a bit weary about cracking open Iron Druid because the main character sounds completely Sue-tastic, if you know what I mean, but Dead Things seem promising from what little I've read so far.

If you can find a copy of it I'd really recommend you grab "Gutter Magic".

It's a shortish, 4 issue trade collection (along with the first iteration "pilot" issue) set in a New York city where magic was discovered during the Second World War, and catapulted the paranormal into the limelight. The main character is a magicless scion of a high-magic house who is trying to piece together an old ritual that's said to give the performer high-powered magical abilities.

It's got some great scenes (the twisty-turny artwork in the Goblin market being what I return to most often), and a pretty wonderful setting for how little we're actually shown.

Looks kinda neat, actually. Art style reminds me quite a bit of the Dresden comics.

I'll see if I can nab a copy later, when I've cut down my backlog a bit.
