I feel for thee
It's the biggest turn down for me in having little friends - they go... and we remain, mourning.
I know what it feels like. I had a dog named Buster and loved him. But he sadly passed a few years ago. I hate to say it but old age affects everyone and every creature. It's best to remember the good moments and not dwell on it.

It's hard when it comes to losing something you love, but don't be sad because it's over, think of the precious and great times you shared with her. Don't bottle up your grief and sadness, let it out and be glad you shared such a brilliant bond with a perfect companion.

I have only had to take the trip to the vet for it once, for my very first cat. I was maybe 7 or 8 at the time. I didn't really understand exactly what dying meant yet, I just knew I grew up with her my entire life up to that point and I wasn't going to see her anymore. My mom dug up a little note that I wrote a few days after she passed that expressed how sad and lonely I was and how much I missed her. I'd never experienced loss like that, so it was a really tough thing for me. Her name was Phydeaux (pronounced Fido).
Since then, we've lost Alfalfa, Dolly, Fancy, and Barnabus. No matter how many times it happens, it never gets easier. Despite this, we move on and find more friends to keep us company on the way.
My thoughts are with you and Ellie. I hope her last moments are in your loving embrace.

Thea, I'm so very sorry, I've never experienced the death of someone very close to me and I know that I possibly can't imagine it. So anything I say probably won't affect you in any way but I want you to know that both you and Ellie are super brave, I seriously can't believe you're going through all of this and not having a mental breakdown. Well, I wish you all the best and stay strong and maybe try to get another pet, even if it's only a fish, so you won't feel too lonely about Ellie. I know I can't do anything right now, so I pray that she passes away peacefully without much pain.
