Crossovers that could write themselves · 12:29am Feb 7th, 2012
First, let me point out that while I am not a fan of Crossovers, that is not entirely my fault. I have see WAY too many crossovers written, abused, and butchered that it makes me cry curled up in a ball in the shower listening to Celine Dion.
That said, there are a few crossover fictions that I have not seen, that could not only write themselves, but would be pretty awesome if they were written well. Please note that when I mean crossover, I don't mean like many of the Fallout: Equestria stories, where it is basically the Fallout universe with ponies instead of People. I mean the obvious "take this universe", and mix it with ponies.
1) Avatar: the Last Airbender: REALLY??? This one is the most obvious crossover I can possibly think of, and it hasn't been written. I consider it one of the best cartoon shows ever written, and I haven't seen a crossover of it in text? Sure, I've seen a few pictures (one or two) crossing the two universes, but that's it. seriously? I can't be the only person out here that can see the story writing itself. You could either (these are off the top of my head):
1) Have Aang go into spirit world, then cross into Equestria instead of his own upon his return.
2) Equestia is a lost tribe of "magic" benders (iffy, i know)
3) Have Celestia be one of the Spirits, hiding the ponies from the world, but somehow the Avatar brings them out (similar to the other two)
2) Stargate: Another one I just say "REALLY???" to. This is one of the best Sci-fi shows I've ever watched (the ending seasons not included), and it is totally plausable. Think about it, The Stargate is related to the Summer Sun Celebration, and one day, it activates when one of the SG teams comes through. BAM! Don't have to worry about any weird or crazy plot holes on how humans got there. Its already written in, and considering the amounts of alien species, why not talking ponies? Throw in a Goa'uld Celestia, and damn would that be awesome (opinion I know).
3) Pokemon: Ok, now hear me out. Yes, I acknowledge that this actually exists. I've seen it. However, I've only seen one or two alright ones, and at least one was ponitized (the other wasn't memorable enough for me to... well... remember). But while yes, it would be a chore to bring the two together, though no more than usual, the idea of a Pokemon trainer attempting/succeeding in capturing one of the mane six? Priceless.
4) Dungeons and Dragons: This is the geek in me talking I know, but this is such an easy one to make. Seriously, there's so much magic in the D&D world, and so many spells that cross planes, pocket dimentions, etc. Why not Equestira? I don't know. Probably would be iffy to do, but I see it working, especially when one of the "PC's" tries to mount Rainbow Dash because Pegasi in the D&D world are sweet mounts.
I konw this is a rant, and I apologize. I'm just sick and tired of seeing a dozen different Fallout: Equestia spinoffs and My Little Skyrim's. Just sayin'.
Err... and in case there was any confusion, when I say "mount Rainbow Dash", I mean in a nonsexual way...
Perverts.
You know, the whole 'mount Rainbow Dash' did not occur to me in a sexual way until you pointed out that you meant it in a nonsexual way...funny how that works (now I need to figure out how to erase that scarring thought from my mind). Anyway...hello, I saw this blog post and thought it would be a good one to comment on so I'm here...to comment on it.
Personally I am not a huge fan of crossovers, however I will say that when it comes to a 'human in Equestria' story, having it be a crossover with another series always makes it better (for example; Pony Gear Solid and Rorschach in Equestria). Like yourself there are also crossovers I'm surprised no has done/there are few of/none of them are very good, though there is only one in particular that comes to the front of my mind every time. As for your list, well I never fully watched Avatar (I managed to come across several episodes every now and then and I did enjoy them) but I must admit, I am surprised with regards to its popularity that no one has done a crossover with it yet. I can't say much for your second one, Stargate, because I have never watched it and outside of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagan I have little interest for Sci-fi. The third one I have myself thought of before however I can only imagine trouble when it comes to the normal Pokémon game universe (as you pointed out the trainers would all be trying to catch the ponies, thinking them to be talking Pokémon), and I think it would work much better in one of the spin off Pokémon universes, such as the Mystery Dungeon universe. For the fourth one, well there are plenty of fanfics where the Mane 6 play Dungeons and Dragons but I have never come across one where they end up in the Dungeons and Dragons world (which I would find most entertaining, particularly if they were in the cartoon version...thinking that has just made me feel very old).
What surprises me most though is the nearly complete absence of Kirby crossovers, I have encountered only three and only one of them I would term a proper crossover and at that, any good (it is also not on this site). Just compare the two series though, they are both bright and cheerful, both with a great variety of creatures and monsters, and both have surprisingly sinister and deep moments (02 still stands as the second most terrifying villain made by Nintendo). Kirby and My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is, as you have put it in your title, a crossover that could write itself.
I like your suggestions, though I can't see Sci-fi working to well in conjunction with My Little Pony, and prefer for the crossover elements to be of a more fitting fantasy nature, they could all work. Saying that though I think any crossover can work if the writer behind it is talented enough. Cheerio!
