Battlefront 2 Hands-on First Impressions · 11:27am Nov 18th, 2017

Alright, first off, let me explain.

Shut up, I said I'm going to explain.

In case you didn't hear, sometime Thursday, the Disney CEO made a phone call to the Electronic Arts CEO, and a few hours later, all microtransactions were temporarily removed from Battlefront 2 pending re-working. While the contents of the phone call aren't being made public, I like to think that our Mouse Overlords threatened to pull EA's Star Wars license if they didn't get their heads out of their asses.

So, with that, I decided to take yet another $60 gamble.

So far?

Spoilers ahead!

The Campaign: Overly short, but fun. The narrative starts out absolutely phenomenally, but quickly devolves into a by-the-numbers redemption story that Star Wars has done many times before. Don't get me wrong, it's a decent by-the-numbers story, but I've been spoiled by four amazing Imperial narratives in The Old Republic. We drift away from Iden and we're treated to what are essentially Hero character previews. The campaign leaves us hanging and teases us for whatever DLC missions that are upcoming. It never stopped being fun.

The starfighter missions really make me wonder: How in the hell has Rogue Squadron 4 not been made? You could easily, EASILY take Battlefront 2's starfighter sections, make them 10 times longer, and call it a completely separate game that would sell like hotcakes.

Also, the inclusion of the Heavy Repeater made my brain melt. It was amazing surprise and a serious hit of nostalgia. I hadn't seen that gun since Jedi Outcast.

The Arcade mode: This is going to be fun, and were it not for the asinine daily credit limit that is expected to be lifted, I'd burn through these immediately. A more fleshed out version of the Survival mode we got in Battlefront 2015.

The multiplayer: Also fun, although it sucks being killed by someone with better Star Cards, the whole thing is rather casual, and just feels like Star Wars.

In short, well, fun. The progression system needs serious, serious work, but for the time being, if I'm killed, it won't be because my opponent spent more money than me (save for the Deluxe Edition cards they got).

So I think I can comfortably say that there are far worse ways I've spent $60.

Glad you could join us in this amazing star wars game :p

All hail Disney. Im glad someone finally stood up to EA. Still won’t buy it because it’s made by EA though... I’ll never forgive them for axing Maxis and Pandemic.

I'd rather bet $60 on them adding microtransactions back in once the attention dies down.

I hope to get my $60 worth by then.

Interesting thing about about the rogue squadron topic. There was a planned rogue squadron game that was more or less complete but got fucked over by licensing issues, and the only reason I know about that is because Vinny talked about it during his 10th Mario Odyssey stream

I thought it was because Rogue Squadron 3 wasn't really that much of a success because of the ground segments.

Just looked into it some more, found a video from DidYouKnowGaming That talks about this far better than I can.
